As of January 2nd, there will be a partial ban on fireworks on Oahu. It's about time.Every New Year we hear of somebody who got badly hurt and ended up in the ER due to some child playing with fireworks. Often, it's grown-ups, too.
Dogs are upset by the noise and smoke and people with breathing problems really suffer.
And yet they say the majority of people want to keep using fireworks. We saw a whole bunch of tents on Kamehameha Hwy selling crates of fireworks. The drugstores and even Sam's Club are full of it.
If it were just the little firecrackers, I wouldn't be so much against fireworks. What happens is people misuse it. They unwrap the firecrackers and put the powder together to create a bigger bang. Our windows have also been rattled by some kind of bomb that causes the car's security systems to go off. It scares the bejeezus out of me, especially if I'm already asleep!
We had a friend who worked for the Lung Association. He was fighting for this ban 35 years go. Well... it took a while but it's better late than never.
Now... here's the problem. They're saying that because the ban takes effect on January 2nd, we're in for a horrendously noisy New Years tomorrow night.
Maybe I should get ear plugs?

Kay, I thought last year was horrid! Our house filled with smoke and all the windows rattled for hours - -the whole place fairly vibrated and the noise was outrageous! I can't imagine worse!
I was in Honolulu 41 years ago (Wow, was it THAT long ago?) on New Years Eve. I remember the city erupting in firecrackers, and the streets were red with the paper coverings of spent firecrackers. The air was full of smoke.
Get ear plugs. Get nose plugs for the smoke. Keep the covers over your head. Or fly to Molokai immediately. According to my brother, it's even quieter than Kauai.

I don't mind them here. But I can see how they would be a nuisance on densely populated Oahu.
