Hard Drive Ready to Die

When my daughter, son-in-law (Ed) and granddaughter were here in December, Ed upgraded my computer. Unfortunately the Seagate Barracuda hard drive (bought at Best Buy) is drowning. It keeps giving me these horrible gasps warning me that it's ready to die at any minute so I should back things up. I was hoping it was maybe a mistake?

We were talking to my daughter and granddaughter on Skype and my son-in-law called so we did a three way conference. He's in Texas now, but was able to get into our computer here in Hawaii by magic and search to find what was wrong. He then did the backing up for us.

Ed verified that yes, our hard drive is actually malfunctioning and ready to die.

Doggone it! However, the Seagate does have a 5 year warranty so Ed took care of finding out the model #s, codes, etc. and is having them mail another hard drive out to us in a couple of days.

Then the plan is to take an "image" off the dying hard drive and transferring all the data onto the new one. That's where we'll be calling my brother, Dennis over to connect the correct wires, etc.

Thank goodness!

Poor Ed. He's stressed and tired from his job in another state, called to say hello to his daughter and had to work on his in-laws' computer from afar. I sure do love that guy! I wish everybody could have a son-in-law like Ed. I also wish I could send an andagi (Okinawan pastry) that he loves to him right now.

  4. When my computer died last year, we took it to PERSONAL TOUCH COMPUTERS in Pearl City to fix. The technician there was able to transfer all of our data to a new Dell computer. So far so good! It is still good.

Thank God you have such a wonderful son-in-law, Kay. Not to mention a great brother! Blessings!

  6. we all need a son or son-in-law to help us with computer stuff. I suppose a dg or dg-in-law could do the same thing but they are usually too busy with family to take that on too. Glad you are able to get so much help...

  8. We should all take this as a warning. We should back up everything. Everything, everything, everything. Good grief, it sounds absolutely dreadful to be going through such a thing, scares the wits out of me.

  10. Isn't it grand to have a techie in the family?

My ex-husband is my tech. It's not the ideal but he's forgotten more about computers than I'll ever know. I reconcile his assistance by calling it the alimony I didn't get. lol

  11. So sorry to hear about your computer problems. Thankfully, you have a son-in-law who takes care of such things so well. We have Jason, Julie's intended. After her death, he is still family. He has been always been so gracious about fixing our technical difficulties.

  15. Cool. You have someone to take over your computer remotely and fix it too. I just love that! Our son-in-law is good with hands on conmputer stuff but Tad, a young friend, is our remote go-to guy.
