Spookey Spokeo

Art got this information from a bunch of his hometown buddies. They have a network that look out for each other which is great. Here's what they wrote him. I've since discovered that both my kids have already removed themselves from this listing. They were way ahead of us. Tif did send us detailed information on how to remove ourselves, but it really wasn't difficult at all.

"This was on KITV this morning. May be a good thing to look into, especially if you have Facebook or something like it.

www.spokeo.com

There's a site called Spokeo.com that's a new online USA phone book with everyone's personal information: everything from pics you've posted on Facebook or any other website anywhere, along with your approximate credit score, home value, income, age, etc. You can remove yourself by first searching for yourself on their site to find the URL on your page. Copy that URL, then hit the Privacy button on the bottom of their page to remove yourself. Check your email after that, click the Click Here button and then wait about 2 minutes and recheck and it should be gone.

I checked and my whole family is listed there, take yourself off the site immediately. You don't want this info falling into the wrong hands. Please forward to friends and family also."

The Privacy button at the bottom right hand side of the page is tiny so put on your glasses to find it. I imagine they don't want everybody removing themselves from their directory. I can't imagine anybody being happy about having so much information accessible to anybody willing to pay a few dollars to get it.

  1. Thanks Kay but did you have a problem with the code number? No matter how many times I tried to type in those letters, it always gave me an error, even when I could see I was typing in the correct code.

  2. thanks for the heads up, I found myself on that site with my phone number and a photo of my house, and it said my husband Allen was a female...lol. So I removed myself and it seems to be gone. I wonder if they don't sell your email address somehow? Guess time will tell...

  4. I couldn't believe they had listings for me from years ago when I still lived in Texas and my addresses in Portland where I haven't lived in four years!! Plus they had my current address, but not anymore!! Thanks so much for the heads up, Kay!

  5. Denise: No, I didn't have a problem and I erased Art's name and my mother's as well. Have you tried copying from the url address box at the top and pasting the code? They do tell you to do that. Maybe that would work?

  6. Did this a few months ago and posted it to all my Facebook friends who did likewise. However, it's like a "whack-a-mole." For every one you take down, there are more out there. If someone wants to find you, they will.

  8. That's horrendous! I hope there's nothing like that in UK (though I wouldn't be surprised if there were!)
There are so many rogues 'out there'.

  9. hmmm. they have 2 entries for David: one with his home address and another with his work post office address.

I learned there are 11 people with his name on the internet.

so far only one with my name.

  15. The way I see it is that even after you remove your personal info from the listing, the same info probably remains in website's data bank.

  16. It's so sad, what people do.

I was taken by your header. What a beauty. Well done.

  17. I was amazed at how common my name is! Although I shouldn't have been. When I go to the doctor or to Walmart to get my contacts I have to give my address with my name because there is another with my name. I also have a sister in law who has my name too.

  18. Thanks!! They had two listings for me and I removed them both but it makes me wonder how man other sites there are like them. It's pretty scary.

  19. Tell Denise to copy and paste.

Thanks for this post, Kay. I have removed myself from the data base. They only had really old info on me anyway. Since I don't have a phone in my name, I am off their radar.
