Storm Damage!

We woke up at around 3:30 AM yesterday feeling the house vibrating and rattling. I thought we were having another earthquake. It sounded like a train rolling by. I was sound asleep but our heavy garbage can on the curb falling over must have been what really woke me up.

The storm damage we found in the morning was startling. The hose caddy had been blown away from the side of the house.

A huge branch of the tree in front of our house had broken off.

KC might be sad to see that her heart tree no longer has the shape that she loved.

Our neighbors down the street also lost a big branch from their tree. I called the Facility Maintenance Department for the City and County of Honolulu. They sent a crew out to take care of the branches before the end of the day.

My brother says the screens on their condo windows in Salt Lake blew out and that he saw palm trees bent over with the hurricane like winds. Good grief!

Art and mom were very unhappy about our papaya tree nearly falling over. Art is trying to figure out how to make a crutch to hold the tree up.

As you can see, there are a lot of fruit starting to grow that we are not willing to give up on.

I sure hope that's all (please!) for the winter/spring storms. The weather forecaster was even talking about hail! Doesn't Mother Nature know this is Hawaii?

  1. Mother Nature has lost her map maybe.
Gee Kay, that sounds scary. Glad the damage wasn't any worse.
Nice that the city takes care of those fallen limbs.
We had a freak wind one evening at Heifer Ranch in Arkansas. A big pine tree fell onto my bedroom roof in the volunteer house. The guys cut it the next morning and said the roof was OK. I was skeptical. The next rain came through straight onto my desk and books. :(

May your weather calm down and get back to normal.

  2. In Hawaii?

Comment in reply to your comment on my post, "I boy named, George."

I am with you Kay when it comes to understanding things like this. It is the same way with lots of other things. Being born into it makes one believe in it – from religion to slavery. A plantation owner's children were no doubt in favor of the slaves they kept - things like that are set in humans almost like a defective gene.

Born a Catholic usually means a Catholic from birth. Or born a Jew equates to being a Jew. Baptist babies don't often become Catholic adults. Slavery. For and against seems to have depended on where you were born in that time period.

  3. I´m glad nothing mayor on the house got broken and hope Art finds a way to save the Papaya tree. Those fruits will be delicious!

  4. Glad you three are safe but sorry to see KC's heart tree damaged!

  5. Sounds like you had a bad one. Good thing the house was spared but I hate how nature prunes trees. Kind of willy nilly. Hope you can save the trees. We used to prop them up in Florida and they always did well.
We had a storm last night also but no damage. This is normal for Arkansas. I also felt my first quake last week, that is not normal for my area. Nature is trying to get out attention.

  6. my goodness that looks ferocious! I hope you are able to save those delicious papayas!

  7. This past week we experienced 60 mph gusts. The area looked like a war zone! Many roads were totally impassable. The week before we had 40 mph winds that began brush fires as the humidity was strangly low. Weird.

  8. It left quite a mess behind for you to clean up. I hope you can save your papaya tree. We had storms last night with tornado and flash flood warnings. It was a pretty long night with lots of lightning and thunder. I look forward to Spring, but I hate the frequent tornado scares.

  9. March weather is like that unpredictable. Glad your damage was only minor. I remember when you planted that papaya tree...

  10. Looks like the expression, March,in like a lion, out like a lamb, might be fitting your part of the world this year. We have had mild weather here, so far, in the heart of California, but I know that can change in an instant.

  11. It would be a lot worse in a hurricane!

So far, no damage in my area. But, I have not walked around the house, yet, so can't be sure.

What new name will KC come up with for her heart tree? "Broken Heart" Tree? lol.

  12. Gosh Kay, these things are so sudden, glad you are all okay, but the damage looks terrible. We're having a lot of rain this weekend, and flood warnings in Toronto!

  13. Wow, Kay, what a storm that must have been! I'm sure Art will figure out how to save the papaya tree. I can only dream of having a papaya tree - I'd eat all the fruit myself. Dick and Lindy couldn't have any.
Gigi is right, KC's tree will have to be the broken heart tree now. So sad.
I'm glad you, Art, your mom, your brother and his family are all safe, however. That's what counts.
    Luv, K

  16. That was quite a storm. I'm glad there wasn't anything worse done. We had something similar a couple of weeks ago with 60 mph winds.

  17. Denise: You had 60 mph? We had 51 and our house was shaking. This is really scary!

  18. Linda Reeder: We were worried about the panels too but they seem to be OK and are functioning all right.

  20. yea, what was all that on your part of the same island, saw it on the local news last night. The high winds must have spawned off mini tornadoes.

  21. Kay, I'm so glad you are all right!! I'm sorry for the storm. The weather around the world is just crazy!!

  22. Oh my scary stuff. Of course here in Oklahoma we get quite a bit of the winds for sure. Hope the tree makes it okay.

  24. Aya: We don't get the really severe storms too often, thank goodness, but every so often, it gets pretty scary.

  25. I am glad the damage wasn't worse. If anybody can figure out how to stand the tree up, it will be Art.

  26. Storms are scary stuff, especially when the wind is blowing too hard. Glad the damage was not too bad, sorry about your trees.
