The sun is awfully bright in Hawaii so we did get mom some of those clip on shades for her glasses. It was OK for a while, but then she complained that it was too heavy and bothersome. She's been noticing the transition glasses that Art and I both have now and started to really like the idea of her glasses being able to darken every time she's out in bright light.
We did do quite a bit of price checking this time. The estimate we got from her optometrist was $478.00 for UV protection, scratch proof, transition, bifocals.
Forget Costco because I'm no longer convinced they are the absolute best place to buy glasses AND you have to be the actual card holder!
Next stop was Kaiser Permanente's optician. Their price for about the same thing was $309.00 + tax because they were having a $100. off of the frames promotion for April.

Art and I then checked Sam's Club's Optical Center in Pearl City. They had a frame that might work for mom so we brought her in. While we were deciding which one to try on, Alex came over. He blew me away! He started talking Japanese to mom and I'm embarrassed to say he could speak the language much, much better than me. Yikes! It's not often I hear young people in Hawaii able to speak fluent Japanese. He had mom at ease and laughing for the entire session. She smiled at me later and said his Japanese is perfect. Yeah...yeah... I know. Shock of shocks! We learned that Alex's wife is from Sendai also. (We don't know any other people from Sendai in Hawaii other than relatives.) Wow! I asked him how he got so good at speaking Japanese. He said it was from watching Japanese dramas. Ummm... no... I don't think that's it. I watch those dramas occasionally, too and my Japanese is not nearly as perfect as his. OK, OK, my Japanese is pretty crappy. Ah well...
Aside from his ability to speak Japanese, he was also very knowledgeable about glasses. Mom's glasses with a little better lens material cost $302 + tax.
Next time I need glasses, I'm going to see Alex!
POSTSCRIPT: Alas! Mom's been wearing those Sam's Club glasses and is having some difficulty getting used to them. The bifocal line is a bit higher than her other glasses and is causing her difficulty when she gardens. I'm trying to find out if there's any sort of warranty or correction or whatever. I e-mailed Alex, but haven't heard back yet. We'll see.
I love the way you tell this story. hehe! It's worth the $302, even without the glasses.
ReplyDeleteMay Mama-san enjoy her new way of looking on the world.
I have used transition lenses for 25 years and yes they have been around that long. I got dollar foolish this time and went for two pair of regular lenses, one for sun, and boy do I miss the transitions.
ReplyDeleteThey are expensive but worth it. That is a really good price you got.
What a nice meeting with Alex. I hope he has heard from all his wife's family.
I just this minute heard where another powerful quake hit Japan. When will this end?
and a million dollar smile as well!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful story! If they could promote Alex's bilingual ability, they may have more customers. My specs have a magnetic spot on the nosebridge to hold the plain sunglasses that came with the frames over the prescription lenses. Good price researching. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI love my transition lenses and only wear sunglasses when driving in full sun, since they don't work through glass. Great story, good pictures, Kay! And how wonderful to make such a connection with Alex, this might continue after she gets her glasses.
ReplyDeleteI just loved this. I am tempted to say, "Only in Hawaii." And it seems as if you got a very good deal on the glasses.
ReplyDeletemy hubby has transition lens and I had them for a while but don't like the outdoor photos where everyone is wearing dark glasses so I have clipons...lol!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your Mom got her glasses sorted out. It's something I have to do for myself and I hadn't thought of the transitional ones. That's a good idea, I'm always reaching for my sunglasses, thanks Kay. Interesting about the young man who could speak Japanese. I've always admired people who can speak other languages.
ReplyDeleteSounds to me like you need to cultivate a 'friends' relationship with Alex and his wife.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post, Kay! That Alex sounds like a charmer. He probably learned his Japanese from his wife.
ReplyDeletesounds like the perfect shopping experience...it's a lot about sales and customer service isn't it? Glad your mom found something suitable.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic surprise for your mother. It must have been a joy for her to meet Alex.
ReplyDeleteThe high cost of glasses is shocking. I need new ones too, but I'm not looking forward to spending the $500.00 to get them. I have transitions too and I don't think I could live without them now.
Holy smoke Batman, if price equivalency meant anything, that would mean your mom's wearing like a whole bubble gum factory on her nose.

yeah yeah I know, sometimes you feel like a nut. If Schmidt & Bender made bifocals, you guys'd have 'em.
PPS: aja and kaipo are big on desserts. want to meet up later this week? say waikele or something. any excuse for icecream.
How lovely:-) Alex must have put your mother so much at ease.
ReplyDeleteI buy my glasses and Barry's online. We don't have complicated prescriptions so that makes it easier, I suppose, but they are MUCH cheaper than buying from the optician.
hmmm. I guess Blogger is not updating Wordpress blogs, as your list shows my post from yesterday, and not today.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice story, Kay!
ReplyDeleteI'm becoming your mom's fan :-)

I just got mine from Sears for $289.00 -- but my sales clerk wasn't as charming as Alex! In fact, she tried so hard to strong arm me into spending more money I almost left with just my prescription!
ReplyDeleteI love to have friendly people help me when I'm shopping. Great story and I'm glad your Mom got her glasses.
ReplyDeleteJust from looking at the pictures, I think that Alex looks like a great guy. Speaking Japanese is a bonus. I'm so glad your mom found what she wanted at a good price and that she was able to have a positive shopping experience.
ReplyDeleteGood deal!! And he was so sweet to your mom!!
ReplyDeleteMaking Mom happy is the big reward. A good price is the bonus!
ReplyDeleteOh, what a nice story, Kay! So glad your mom had such a lovely experience getting her glasses. Sounds like you (all) had a fun time looking for eye glasses. And, what a good deal on the price too!
ReplyDeleteI love my transitions lenses but they are expensive..I think your Mom will love them...
