We helped Mom get new glasses at Sam's Club because she wanted to get transitions for the bright Hawaiian sun. I wrote a post earlier about meeting Alex, the optician at Sam's. We were astonished to hear how beautifully he spoke Japanese.Well the glasses came in and she wore them around the house and outside. We told her she looked great in them, but she just didn't like how it felt. She said she had to keep dropping the lens to watch TV and then raising it to read. She pronounced this new shape too terrible to get used to.
I contacted Alex about this problem and he told me that we should bring her in and make it right.
"NO," said Mom. "It's too much trouble." Then came the battle of wills.
"If you don't like it that much, Mom," I said, "You need to bring it in. Those are expensive glasses and Alex said he would help you."
"No," she wouldn't budge. I wouldn't describe the look she gave me mulish, but...
"Arrrrghhhh...."
In the end Art told her we were going and that's that!

Alex was as sweet and understanding as could be. He hunted down another pair of frames that were almost identical to her old pair and said there would be no charge. He assured me that they would make it right.
He even said the pair he found is cheaper so we would be getting a refund on the frames. And he also added that "If there are any changes to the prescription or otherwise within the warrantied time, there is no charge to you for a prescription change."
I know Costco was reputed to be the best place for glasses, but at Costco you can only buy new glasses if you are the card holder and I don't know if they have the same warranty. Sam's Club lets you buy a pair for another family member. Besides, Costco doesn't have Alex.As we were returning home, Mom kept telling us how that other pair was driving her crazy and that the shape was all wrong and how she's been noticing other people's glasses and rounder ones are better and how when you're watching TV it's a bother to adjust it up and down and when you're pulling weeds, you can't see right, and the frames were too skinny, and........
Arrrrrrghhhhhhh!
I've got all my fingers and toes crossed tight that this next pair will be perfect for her. Alex chuckled and said, "We'll make it right."
With an optician as wonderful and kind as Alex, plus that guarantee, this is where I'd be getting any new glasses I need. (And yes, their prices were the best of several places I checked out.)
I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate this post. I need new glasses. Alex sounds like a super guy, I'm glad he helped your Mom with his patience and kindness.
ReplyDeleteFabulous service! Alex needs a special award:-) (Hope the new glasses are successful . . . )
ReplyDeleteIf it wasn't for air fare, Alex would have another customer. I haven't been happy with my glasses for the last two pair.
ReplyDeleteTo solve the TV, Kindle and computer woes, I bought cheap Walmart glasses in the prescription needed for those uses. Sure it means lots of glasses around the house, but I have single strenght lenses for the purpose I need. Aaahh, no more head bobbing. Still use the presctiption ones for everything else.
It sounds like a perfect solution, and it's so wonderful of you to insist that she took them back. What a great guy!
ReplyDeleteKudos to Art for insisting that she go back and kudos to Alex for making things right.
ReplyDeleteThe top photo of your mother is excellent. What a pretty lady.
ReplyDeleteah just think of all the patience you are gaining...lol!
ReplyDeleteI prefer Lenscrafters because they do the glasses the same day. In fact, I plan to get my reading glasses there today. Won't be expensive as it's covered by HMSA.
ReplyDeleteWhat good news, Kay!
ReplyDeleteI went from roundish to retanglish lenses and was surpried at the difference. I've had trifocals for years with round lenses and have to tilt my head a tad lower when driving. The main difference I noticed with rectangle lenses was that they were harder to clean! Even with lens cleaner, etc., just getting the "corners" clean and clear is harder than a roundish lens.
Maybe, have Mom "taste" some of her sake to ease the strong will, eh?
It's nice to know in the world of big businesses that there are Alex Angels to still provide old-fashioned service.

The photo of your mom was wonderful, such a lovely woman. I wished I could fly to Hawaii to meet Alex, I have bifocals now and have been back three times to get them adjusted! After the third time I had another eye exam (free of charge) and turns out that the prescription wasn't "quite right"! So I had to wait a week to get the new prescription and they still bother me. One of the meds I take affects my eyes I have been told. I can certainly understand your mom's frustration, I have given up on my glasses. I cannot even use my computer without eye strain and adjusting up and down..side to side! Anyways, Alex sounds super-duper and wished I could visit him! I shall have to check out the local Sam's Club here....I am trying to get caught up on all my favorite blogs so I shall be back soon!
ReplyDeleteThis is another great story. Thank goodness for Alex. I think buying glasses is a hard thing. One just doesn't know how they will really work until they have used them a few times. The traits I need most in a qualified and knowledgeable optician are: patience, kindness, expert knowledge of the various positives and negatives to wearing a certain type of frame, and most of caring concern for me and my satisfaction for the glasses I end up wearing. Alex has all of this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful story, and what a wonderful man. He is kind, patient, and speaks Japanese! If your mom's new glasses turn out to be just what she always wanted, she's going to want to adopt Alex. (He's going to love your family and all those big dinners!)

Yay for Alex and people like him who are kind and do their jobs so well!
ReplyDeletegood news Kay, glad it's all sorted out.
ReplyDeleteGigi: Lucky you to get coverage for your glasses. We don't. Art used to go to Lenscrafters (in Illinois) but he got turned off when he bought the scratch proof protection and the lens got scratched anyway. When he brought them in, they said it was scratch resistant, not scratch proof and too bad. Another time the glasses just didn't work out within the one month warranty time and he brought them in. They exchanged it for him, but was NOT HAPPY about it.
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me. I'll be going to Costco for glasses when my eyes settle down. I'm on a lengthy cleanse and my eyes are changing (for the better) so I'll wait a little longer.
ReplyDeleteThanks.

Sure hope Alex gets employee of the month award. He certainly sounds like a great employee. Makes even me want to go Sam's Club.
ReplyDeleteKay, I am sorry Art had such bad experiences at Lenscrafters. I intend to use my old frames and request GLASS lenses instead of plastic. That's what I have now and they are scratch free. Since I use them for reading only, there's no problem with them feeling heavy.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had service like that down here. All I can say about our optometrist down here is "AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!"
ReplyDeleteIt´s REALLY bad! That´s why I have yet to find a pair of glasses that fit. I´m hope your mom will be happy with the new glasses!
Don't you love it when people go out of their way to help you?
ReplyDeleteDon't you hate it when you try make things right and your parents get stubborn?!
Great post.

Sometimes Mother doesn't know best!
ReplyDeleteAww, your Mum sounds like all our Mums Kay. And good on Art for putting his foot down too so that she could get what she wanted. finding the right glasses is hard really and sometimes it takes getting used to like a new haircut. Sounds like Alex is a gem and you a wonderful daughter and Art a wonderful son-in-law too. By the way your mother looks great too and you clearly get your lovely smile from her.
