We actually celebrated a special Mother's Day outing on Friday. We told Mom that we would be taking her to the Honolulu Zoo for a Mother's Day treat. If we're going to make that long 30 minute trek (This is Hawaii. Anything over 15 minutes is far away.) into Honolulu, Mom asked that we stop by at the Nuuanu Memorial Park where she wanted to bring orchids that she'd grown for my father and grandmother. She especially wanted to let her late mother-in-law know that she hadn't forgotten her on Mother's Day.
It had been raining all morning and on the ride there. However, the rain stopped just in time for us to put the flowers on the grave and columbarium.

Mom does love Japanese food so we took her to one of our favorite restaurants in Kaimuki. It's a small restaurant called Maguroya at 3565 Waialae Ave.

We think they have the tastiest and most generous serving of butterfish we've had on Oahu. Unfortunately, they did not serve chawan mushi with our teishoku lunch. A teishoku is usually composed of a main item, a bowl of rice, some miso soup, and a bowl of Japanese pickles. Chawan mushi is a custard like dish which I love, but they said they only serve it at night. The butterfish teishoku was $17.95 (I think.) Everyone there was so friendly and Mom said she really loved her luncheon.

It downpoured while we were eating lunch, but stopped in time for us to make our way to the Honolulu Zoo which is in Waikiki. I have no idea why they didn't just call it the Waikiki Zoo.
Mom smiled and said, "You're bringing me here to prepare for our Yellowstone trip, aren't you? You can't fool me."

The Zoo had really changed since we came many years ago. We were happy to see all the renovations. Mom said she hadn't been to the Zoo in decades.
We didn't just look at the animals. The plants were also a lot of fun. This cactus plant with it's different colors really captivated us.

All the Starlings in Illinois are just purplish black. I didn't much care for them. However, we thought this Golden Breasted Starling was really spectacular!

We had one little sprinkle and the skies remained gray, but we were able to see everything without getting wet. Because of the rain threat, most people stayed away from the zoo. There were loads of free parking and the zoo was empty.

The Aldabra tortoises were eating mango! How lucky is that! They have no idea how expensive they are now.

The Nene goose is the state bird of Hawaii. There was a sign warning us that the Nenes could bite.
We spent THREE hours walking around the zoo and Mom said she had a great time. She never noticed the time passing and loved every minute. She's ready for Yellowstone now!We left at around 3:00 and traffic was already backed up. It took us 45 minutes (in the rain) to get home! I told you we live very far from the city.
My brother, Dennis and his family will be coming to celebrate Mother's Day with us today.
HAPPY Mother's Day everybody! I want your day to be as perfect as ours was (despite the traffic).
Glad the rain cooperated to make your day together so good.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures.
Happy Mother's Day to you, and to your Mom and Tiffany. Three of the best mothers ever!
happy mum's day!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mom's Day to you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful outing. I LOVE going to busy places on off-days when there is no crowd. Your Mom did dandy and looks so young. All the animals are happy in Hawaii, and even the cactus sprouts many colors in the Aloha clime! The food looks yummy! DrumMajor
Oh, thank you for taking me along on your trip, it was wonderful, and the pictures are outstanding. Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day, Kay, to all the moms! What a lovely outing you had.
ReplyDeleteYour highway looks way too crowded for me. I guess I still like the country boy roads. Gravel is nice, dirt is smooth and paved roads are modern.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the details on the next book to read is
Dog Man
An uncommon live on a faraway mountain
by Martha Sherrill
Rather than buy it, I got it through our branch library.
You and Art and your mothers would like it too.
Hi Kay!
ReplyDeleteHappy mother's day!
This Teishoku looks delish:)
when I go to Hawaii and miss Japanese food, I wanna go to this restaurant:)
I love chawanmushi!
it's very good!
by the way this morning I enjoyed your pictures when you came to japan.
I saw the same scenery from the same place. but you were so lucky to see the snow covered Shirakawago!
Thank you for sharing me!
I saw your pictures and that's why I was able to visit there:)
I see you walking around in your warm weather clothes and have to remember that your rain is warm! We were wearing multiple layers on our outing yesterday!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just feel blessed when the rain arranges itself so as to not spoil your fun? And you were able to give to and have such a lovely day with your mother!
Happy Mother's Day, Kay!! And to your Mom as well! What a delightful post and I love your photos as always. The turtles are incredible! Enjoy your day!

Great photos and a great day!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day!!!!!
I've never visited the Honolulu Zoo, but Ken went there the last time we were on Oahu. I suppose I was shopping that day. Anyway, your photos make me wish I'd taken the time to go along with Ken. Our hotel was right across the street from the zoo. Each early morning we'd hear what we thought were car alarms going off. Ken discovered during his zoo visit that it was a bird in the zoo, not a car alarm, that we'd been hearing.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pictures! Glad y'all had a great time. David and I visited the zoo 3 years ago and loved every minute of it. But, we certainly did not spend 3 hrs there!!! I can't stay on my feet that long.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!
Happy Mother's Day to you and your mom :)Glad to learn that you all had a great time.
ReplyDeleteAll the pictures are very nice specially the one that of the bird .
Ah, that traffic is what the LA freeways look like all t he time now.
ReplyDeleteYes, happy mothers day to you and your family.
The traffic picture is funny. Looks like everyone was going the same direction as you! The other side looked pretty good. I never think of traffic like this when I think of Hawaii. Also, it must have been a warm rain. You all are walking around like we do in the middle of summer when it's 109.
ReplyDeletelooks like a perfect day except for traffic...
ReplyDeleteI agree with most. It looked like a great day till I saw the traffic. Yikes. We only have two lane roads where I live.
ReplyDeleteYour state bird is really neat looking.
A lovely way to spend Mother's Day. This is another post that brought back more wonderful memories from our visit to Hawaii. The giraffe photo that I have on my side-bar is one I took at the Honolulu Zoo and I remember all the beautiful flowers very well. You also answered a mystery as I have a picture of the exact same bird, but I never knew its name. Thank you Kay.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of Hawaii, I do not think of traffic like that! :)
ReplyDeleteYour mom is adorable! It sounds like you have such a special relationship.
Your mom is amazing. I love that she has that much energy and walked that long. I think I would have been begging for a spot to sit and rest a bit.
