Mom heard on the radio that Shirokiya, a Japanese store and restaurant had revamped their food area to make it just like Japan. "Would you like to go?" asked Art. We thought she'd say no because she hates imposing on us for anything.
"OK," she said.
"Would you like to invite the aunties and uncle?" asked Art.
"OK, I'll call them now." she answered happily.
Now we were really surprised. It sounded like she really wanted to try this place. Auntie Grace said she wasn't very interested because she didn't like the food there very much.
Mom told her it was supposed to have improved with more varieties. Auntie Dorothy said she and uncle were willing to give it a try. Auntie Grace said if Auntie Dorothy was going, she'd love to join her sisters.

There were a lot of little food booths to choose from. They'd added what looked like an artificial wisteria arbor.
But you know what? The food was still so-so. Art's dish might have been the best of what we all chose. I wouldn't go there again.

It was still great to have the three sisters together and we always love seeing uncle.
Art is now excitedly planning our 2012 trip to Japan so mom can have some much better tasting Japanese food in a real Japanese setting.
Mom, who told us she didn't want to travel anymore is giving him lots of ideas for places to see. Mom, who said she can't stand the cold is saying it'll be OK to go in spring because it would be nice to see some cherry blossoms. Mom, who said she prefers staying at home is saying it'll be nice to see her family in Japan again.
"It'll be my last trip," says Mom. As I recall, she said that after our 1st trip to Japan, our trip to the Northwest, our 2nd trip to Japan, and our trip to the National Parks. She'll probably say it again after our trip to Alaska later this year.
We'll see...
From the picture it appears that a lot of people are willing to give the place "a try." Your food/restaurant reviews are always informative and well-written.

It was nice to have a family get-together, anyway - and makes another trip to Japan imperative, I'd say:-)
ReplyDeletegood for your mom, she's got spunk and is enjoying her golden years with help from you guys!
ReplyDeleteWhen you get to a certain age, it's ALWAYS possible it's your last trip. But the last one, there's no way to sign up for it. You just have to wait and see...
ReplyDeleteIt is so great that your mom has you and Art to take those trips with. I hope she will keep traveling with you as long as possible.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sisters.Sorry that the food was not up to the mark but the place does look popular.Your trips are so much fun - loving family that you all are.
ReplyDeletethats just so heart warming to her these stories,, my mum has been gone now 12 years and I can't begin to tell you how I miss her.Your mum is quite a character,, the trip to Japan sounds wonderful, best of all she will come with,
ReplyDeleteit's great that she can still travel. these days health insurance is so expensive for seniors, those with chronic illnesses, it is prohibitive. Your mom's lucky.
ReplyDeleteToo bad the food was only so-so, but as we have often said in such situations, it's the company that counts and I would love to be in such company. I think your family is awesome.
ReplyDeleteLOVE DJan's wisdom, that one can never officially sign up for their last trip...wonderful approach! Glad you know you Mom so well. That's cute how she agrees to plans bit by bit. Was that caviar on Art's food? (Maybe Mom just needs to sprinkle saki on the so-so food...) DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI love your mom's spirit!
ReplyDeleteYou guys are all such winners. Your mom makes me laugh.....last trip indeed. LOL
ReplyDeleteLOL! She is so special, your mom. She should enjoy it as long as she can.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that your mom has sucha wonderful daughter and SIL! And that she still gets to see her sisters.
ReplyDeleteI haven't shopped in Shirokiya in over TEN YEARS!!! I bought a couple of platters from there that I use quite often, so I do recommend their dishware. I would not eat their food anyway, but thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteNext time I go to Honolulu I'll know all the good places and the bad places to eat, thanks to you and Gigi!
ReplyDeleteYour mom is so sweet. I think a lot of her willingness to go along with things is because you are such a good planner and so she feels comfortable about going out and taking trips with you.
You all are so good to your mom and she is such a sport. My grandmother used to say for 20 years, "I'll see you next year, the good Lord willing". He was quite willing.
ReplyDeletePerhaps if we all thought each event was our last, we would appreciate them more.
Can't wait for your trip to Alaska.
Kay, It is SUCH a privilege and joy to know you and your family. WE have blog friends, but because we have met IRL (in real life) and share this island I owe you a real debt of friendship. Art is a beautiful man IRL, your children and grands are gifts your share with us; and you dear Mom touches my heart with gratitude for ALL she & her generation did for ALL Hawaii!
ReplyDeleteBless your Ohana!
Kay, you know I could learn a lot from you. I love how you are able to include your mom in everything. I wish I had your skills when it comes to dealing with mom.
ReplyDeleteI love your mom. She is a blessing to us all.
Everybody: Awww... thank you so much for your sweet compliments. I'll be sure to share them with mom. I can already see her smiling.
ReplyDeleteDrumMajor: Yes, that is ikura which is salmon roe. I think they do use sake to make it. I think...
Your mom has spunk! And she's very fortunate to have you and Art to travel with her. You two are wonderful children.
ReplyDeleteSadly, with a lot of ethnic restaurants, the kitchen staff are not primarily nationals from the home country who are acquainted with the intangibles. But moreso with local Japanese-restaurants.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwww, your mom is such a sweetie. Looks like everyone is having so much fun. Love the photos, they're beautiful and the food makes my mouth water all the way over here.
ReplyDeleteWell Kay, that's what you get for planning and executing your trips so well. Who could resist wanting to go with you.
ReplyDeleteHappy trails to you all!
