National Parks Road Trip Album

I have a feeling that people who know us have no idea what it takes for us to create our Trip Photo Album. If they did, they'd think we were crazy!

Here's what we do:

Step #1: Review all the photos! We had three cameras going full blast so there were a ton of photos. There were approximately 3,280 photos taken. I'm not counting the ones we deleted.

Step #2: I select all the photos I think are reasonable and place them on digital pages.

Step #3: Art goes over and red frames the ones that he feels should be deleted.

Step #4: Review our choices several more times. We have our haggling to do at this time... with gritted teeth (just kidding... sort of). Art remembers every single photo he took and I can't help but be partial to mine. Tiffany is in Chicago so she can't say anything and doesn't care anyway.

Step #5: I format the pages with the photos that we finally agree on.

Step #6: Art writes in the details of the trip; where we were, history, identity of the wildlife, etc.

Step #7: I add speech bubbles to show the gist of what we were thinking at the time. No, don't believe Art. I don't put speech bubbles on every page.

Step #8: We go over the flow of the pages.

Step #9: Take the pages to Office Depot to be printed. (They didn't turn out very well this time, but we no longer print our own photo pages at home because it's just too darn expensive.) I put them into a binder and make the cover.

Step #10: We make pdf and jpeg versions of the album for family (and interested friends, if they want one) and save them to a disk.

Is it worth the craziness? It's taken us nearly two weeks to finish this National Parks album and we were working on it constantly!

I just saw my mother downstairs happily looking through all the album photos and reviewing it with her journal notes. She's called Auntie Grace to tell her we're bringing her copy of the album over tomorrow.

It's well past my mother's bedtime, but she's still awake, able to remember again all the beauty of what she's seeing in the 97 pages of documentation we created for her and Auntie Grace.

Is all that work worth it? It is to us.

POSTSCRIPT (for my Seattle friends): The only food my mother remembers is the Ivar's clam chowder that we had at the airport. She says it was the most delicious food she remembers from the whole trip!

POSTSCRIPT #2: Yes, the cover photo was taken by Art. I conceded that one and even selected it.

  1. That's such a good idea. I take lots of photographs and download them to my computer and there they stay. I have taken the precaution of making a back up but even so, no-one gets to look at them. I really should get some of them printed out, as I know how much I enjoy looking at all of our photograph albums made before the days of the digital camera.

  2. What a marvelous idea. Like Amanda, mine usually stay in a jumble in my computer or from the old day, just in boxes.
I really like the thought bubbles.
As massive a task as it was, I am sure it will be appreciated for a long time.
    Awesome cover shot Art.

  3. Wow! That was a lot of work, but totally worth it when you see the finished product. What a wonderful and cherished book you end up with, and you can go through it any time, even when the computer is down! Great idea and fabulous results! :-)

  4. TOTALLY worth it, Kay...a priceless way to capture your memories.

Here is a video of Prince Will and Kate in Canada, causing quite a stir. Like rock stars...very popular here. It's a Canada Day public holiday too.

  7. what a work of love for you family to pursue capturing your history and memories for the future. One day KC will sit down and enjoy remembering...great project. You could also make a blogging book of your vacation but then you'd miss some photos...lol!

  8. I make a photo album of our major trips, but never this involved! Now I have so many albums on my shelf that I'm cutting back on what I do. I just had 60 photos printed at Costco from our three weeks with Jill and the kids. They will go into a continuing family album. Jill also has a cd of all of the photos, and I had several printed up as 5X7s to give to my mother.
But with four generations on your trip, this one was so special, and certainly worth all the work you went to. besides, you are retired, and you get to spend your time any way you choose to!

  9. WOW Kay! You make the computer part sound so easy. How much would you charge to get through 8 boxes of pics from my son growing up, then another 13 boxes of my own family's pics? Your album is really nice. DrumMajor

  11. Yes, I too make albums for every trip. I do it a little differently, and lately I've been wondering if it is worth it. Who cares but me.

  12. I don't have enough shelf space for more photo albums, so I stopped buying albums to fill. However, I am thinking of making cookbooks to either sell or give away. I'll email you with my questions, Kay. Thanks!

  15. I believe that when Patty and I began blogging back at a place owned by an individual named, "Keith," called, "ModBlog," the idea there was to publish a year of blogging. In those days it was too time consuming to upload photos on phone line connections so photos were next to being tiny and the blogs were mostly writing. I enjoyed that a lot and still have the posts saved on hard drives.

I think it is nice sometimes to go back and repost some of those old posts. I do it now and then using Windows Live Writer.

  20. Well, just think of the coming generations, how much easier it will be for them to do genealogy than it was for you, thanks to your orderly trip books (and everything else).

  21. What a wonderful idea.

I make albums from scrap books of special trips and annotate them like you. I have spent many happy hours re-living them.

  24. I agree with your mom, there's nothing like clam chowder from Ivar's Acres of Clams.
You're right, being able to present your mom and your aunt those albums is worth the whole two weeks' work. How absolutely wonderful.
I'm glad I don't know how to add speech bubbles to our travel photos or I would never get any sleep. LOL

  25. Wow, what a labor of love. You make me ashamed of myself, I really need to do something about our photographs, old and new. I just got a gadget from tv that is the size of a skinny rolling pen and you run it down the photo and it scans it. I'm hoping to get all my photos and paperwork memorabilia organized and put on discs for any in the family who are interested. You are an inspiration.
