Diabetic Super Foods

Art just pointed out an article by Jim Miller on his Savvy Senior column in the Honolulu Star Advertiser.  Mr. Miller listed some Diabetic Super Foods.  I've listed them below.  I won't type out the whole article saying why they're good, just because I have to give my fingers a rest.

Beans:  Kidney, pinto, navy, black and other types.
I do eat kidney beans in my chili.

Dark-green leafy vegetables:  Spinach, collard greens, mustard greens, kale
I've been making that Krispy Kale thing I wrote about earlier.  Mom is addicted to the light crisp texture.

Sweet potatoes
I like  sweet potatoes but have to really remind myself to  get some.  I wonder if kabocha is good.  Mom always makes that.
 

Berries:  Whole, unsweetened blueberries, strawberries and other berries
I have dried blueberries and cranberries in my oatmeal or cereal every morning.

Tomatoes:
I had tomatoes on my pizza that Cody made for me.  Does that count?
 
Fish with omega-3 fatty acids:  Salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna
Does anchovies count?  Art makes a great omelette with anchovies.  We eat mackerel (Japanese word: saba) quite a bit.  We also like the marinated frozen salmon from Costco

Whole grains:  Pearled barley, oatmeal, breads and other whole grain foods
Art dresses up our oatmeal every other morning with dried cranberries, bananas, and any other fruit he feels like throwing in.
 
Nuts:  Luckily, our daughter keeps sending us Trader Joe's nuts.  Instead of eating junk foods, nuts really are a great snack food.

Fat-free milk and yogurt:  I drink chocolate milk with my morning mocha.  I wonder if that counts I know, I know... sugar.  However, I only put in about 1/4 cup of chocolate milk.

OK... I got the food part down.  I just have to do what Art calls the BIG E.  Sigh...  Exercise!

  3. I have eaten them all, but some not on a daily basis. It is 2:25 am right now. I slept 3 hrs and then woke up. David went out to buy chicken sandwiches from Jack n the Box. Will watch some TV then go back to bed. We must be doing something right, as neither of us is a diabetic.

  5. I am not a huge sweet potato fan, but all the rest I eat on a regular basis. Those nuts, to be healthy, should be raw and not roasted in oil and salted. You aren't as likely to munch down as many of them, either.

    Veterans' Day today, and 11/11/11, who could have failed to notice it? Diabetes runs in my family so I take god care of my pancreas and treat it well. :-)

  6. Swiss miss makes sugar free hot chocolate and there is also maple syrup, etc. Pillsbury has a sugar free with splenda brownie mix. So there are alternatives for sugar!

  7. This is a great list of foods for anyone. Someone was just telling me about making the kale chips yesterday and I think it is something I may try.

  9. At least the sun is shining here. Usually November is grey grey grey.

    Food groups are interesting. I wish someone on our local newspaper staff wrote such informative columns for seniors. This is the price you pay for living in an urban area with millions of Type-A 20-somethings.

    We eat items from most of these food groups. I cannot eat the green leafy stuff because something in the spinach conflicts with one of my meds.

    We eat beans occasionally and had brussel sprounts last night with white chicken meat and sweet potatoes. Wonder if that counts as wholesome?

    Art sounds like an innovative cook. Dianne

  11. For me, I need to incorporate more beans in my cooking. I want to experiment more with my slow cooker, which is the perfect cooking appliance for whole grain pastas and brown rice. Any thing that requires extra cooking time works great in a slow cooker. I love to throw in diced canned tomatoes. And don't forget our beloved azuki beans! Love saba too! For milk, I buy the dry milk powder since our intake is not regular. Thanks for sharing this list and I bookmarked the Savvy Senior link, great site.

  12. Pretty much the way we eat except that we like meat and eat pork and grass fed beef quite a lot. Also, I don't care for non-fat dairy products but even indulge in butter and cream!

  13. It's almost 11am here, the time when we observe a minute's silence for Remembrance Day.
    That makes it 11-11-11-11.
    Won't happen again in my lifetime.
    Unless I start eating those super-foods. I hate beans like that. (I like green beans.)
    We had sweet potatoes last night, and earlier in the week, too. We love them. We haven't had kale for a while, though. I cook it with potatoes, and mash them together, Dutch style.
    I've asked Dick to buy me a juicer so I can get lots of raw fruits and veggies into me for vitamins, because my digestive system isn't handling roughage well right now. He seems to have forgotten.
    However, he puts every "healthy" thing he reads about on his cereal each morning. He says he barely has room in the bowl for cereal any more.
    And of course there's the big E. (I think of it as the big X.)
    Art is so right.
    And I am so bad.

  14. Excellent info! As a diabetic myself, I am familiar with most of those. Cinnamon is a great spice for diabetics to use. It helps to lower blood sugar.

  16. Another great post. I have a friend who is diabetic and I am going to tell her about this and bookmark this for myself. Happy to say a lot of those foods I eat but there is always room for improvement. Thanks Kay.

  17. I am crazy about nuts. I have almonds every day and walnuts for snacks. I just have to limit myself, because I could eat too many and they are high in calories.
    I just put pearl barley in my stew for tonight. Good for me!
