We did a quantum leap in cellphones when our son-in-law ordered our new iPhone for us a month ago. Prior to this one, we could only talk on our cellphones. We couldn't ask it where we were. We couldn't ask it where we could find the cheapest item we were planning to buy. We couldn't ask it where the nearest bathroom was. We couldn't ask it what we should do with our life.
So we had the iPhone, but staring at it just didn't seem to do anything. Siri the cellphone fairy still didn't particularly understand what I needed. I think she likes talking to Art better. She's even been known to tell me she's too busy to help me.
We are signed up for an iPhone class at the Apple Store, but they are so booked that I have no idea when we'll actually be able to attend a class.
Dave is married to my kindergarten to college classmate and lifelong friend, Diane. I'm so glad she married him because he's our iPhone Go-To Guy. He's also the fellow who's taken all our family photos and is a super duper, amazing professional photographer. If you ever see a spectacular family photo on this blog, it's his.
Dave and Diane had us over so he could help us become friends with this iPhone mystery. He helped us install Apps, explained how to use iTunes, showed us how to take photos, and clean up open files that were eating the battery life in the background and a whole bunch of other stuff. Phew!
However... now that we're home alone with this machine marvel baby and working with it, we have more questions and quandaries. There's still so much to learn about living with this new member of our family.
Sheesh! It's a good thing Dave lives just down the street... and oh yes, Diane too.

Have fun with your new 'toy':-)
ReplyDeleteGosh Kay -- It sounds like there's a fortune teller who pops out from the phone...if you pay it enough? Have fun. Don't text while driving, eh? I like texting because it doesn't disturb the recipient with an interupting phone call. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI know an iPhone and all of its capabilities would overwhelm me, too. Be sure to update us in a few weeks when you're navigating the thing like a pro!
ReplyDeleteWow! How cool to have one. I still only have a phone that I make calls with. I am feeling really behind the times, but it would cost me much more to be connected all the time.
ReplyDeleteI bet you will learn fast. I have had my smartphone for well over a year and it is still much smarter than I am, but I keep learning.
ReplyDeletewow, what a techie! I don't have an iphone...
ReplyDeletePerhaps one of these days I will get an I-phone. What put me off doing that this time around was the sight of two tourists standing on a corner arguing about the location of a place I knew was in front of them. With your friends Dave and Diane, you should fare better. Dianne
ReplyDeleteOh I forgot to mention the two arguing tourists were holding an I-phone.
ReplyDeleteI want one but my husband feels it is unnecessary. He hates cell phones. I think I am starting to wear him down. He loves my IPod he got me for my birthday, he uses it more than I do! I am confident I will have one by the end of this year:)
ReplyDeleteI've had a love/hate relationship with an iPhone for years. I do like this latest version pretty good. I don't think any device does everything I want it to do. It's also capable of doing a lot I don't need or want it to do.
ReplyDeleteYou are just too cute in that photo. You have such a brilliant happy smile. My Blackberry died and I am using an old cellphone and it's so much easier without all the extras. I'm not sure I want to upgrade. I never used half the features on my Blackberry and I'm not much of a talker - seems kind like a waste of money for me to invest in a new model. I hope you enjoy your iPhone.
ReplyDeleteAn iPhone is something I will never buy. Just don't want to be connected that way, I guess. Good luck with your 2nd mammogram tomorrow, Kay! Hope all turns out fine.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Kay, looks like you're going to have a lot of fun with your IPhone. Our son loves his. I think once you play with it and figure out its inner workings, you're going to fall in love with it too.
ReplyDeleteIphone can do so many wonderful things! I don't have one but I would like to eventually get one. Good luck learning from Dave!
ReplyDeleteGigi: Thank you, Gigi. I put it all out of my mind, but suddenly it's here. When I got the Tripler Hospital reminder yesterday, it startled me. I guess I just didn't want to think about it. The idea that I would have to meet with a doctor or somebody this time and have an ultrasound has unnerved me... a bit.
ReplyDeleteGosh, these things are starting to eat into everyone's time. That's why I completely unplug on the weekends.
ReplyDeletethere's suppose to be a price comparison shopper software too for the er app which gives you a lower price for the same item (by photo?) and the nearest store location for the item while you're at another store. No, don't ask me.
ReplyDeleteThat new gizmo will be great on your next traveling experience. God bless ya. And good vibes for your test, too.
ReplyDeleteI love learning new technology. I would love to have an Iphone
ReplyDeleteI just lost my cell phone, under a wooden walkway on the preserve I walk daily. It fell into the icy water and I couldn't retrieve it..so I purchased a new phone that is just a basic phone...Ashton has had to help me out with it a few times. I am just not with it in the technology field. I bet you will soon be i-Phoning with the best of them! Happy New Year to you and yours Kay!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have an iPhone, but I would be connected to it all the time, just as bad as the kids are these days. And I don't want to have to pay for the 3G service. Our cell phones are strictly for calling and texting, and don't get used very much.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your new baby!
I am ROFLMAO!! What a hilarious post, Kay! I truly love my iPhone and don't know what I would do without it. It is my lifeline and I am almost ashamed to be so connected to it, but it is what it is and I love it. You will too.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun reading the 30 or so posts I missed on your blog because of being away. I enjoyed your photos and all your tips. My cell phone broke last August and I bought a new “intelligent” cell phone. Unfortunately with all my trips I have not had time to figure out how to use it and it sits in its case. I use my husband’s basic cell phone. My New Year resolution should be to take the time to learn how to use my phone….
ReplyDeleteHave a great 2012 and thanks for commenting on my blog.
hope you enjoy-I'm gonna stick with drums and blogging!

I'm feeling a bit like that with my new Mac laptop, it's so different from my previous five year old Mac. I'm about to get a smartphone too, instead of my ancient 'brick', so I think that's going to tax my poor brain too.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to know more on this from you .Everyone around me has an iphone and I have no clue how to use one.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter got a windows phone, and her daughter an iphone. I can't get a new phone for a year though, bah humbug.
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE my iPhone. Have had it almost 3 years and really need to upgrade so as to use iCloud. However, that means upgrading my OS on the Mac which means I lose all my Adobe software, worth a couple of thousand $$. I have to do something soon, and am just so torn up about it. Indecisiveness in NOT my MO.
ReplyDeleteDon't you love it =).
ReplyDeleteDH always has to help his parents because they always end up getting high tech stuff as gifts too (iPads, iPod touches, etc.), but they sure love those tech toys!
