I've always liked things that sparkle. I was drawn to diamonds because... well... they sparkle! When I see a ring on somebody's hand that sparkles, it draws my admiration. Art did get me a lovely engagement ring that I wore while I was working.
However, now that I'm retired and living in Hawaii I don't want anything on my fingers. I wear Art's old wedding band that no longer fits him because his knuckles have gotten a little larger for some reason. I like it because it's smooth and unobtrusive.
My original engagement ring is in the bank safety deposit box along with a few other pieces that I want to keep safe for Tif and Jon some day. If a burglar were to come to our house, they would be sadly disappointed... unless they were craving race training and finisher t-shirts, that is.
If there are occasions where I should wear something a little dressier, I have this cubic zirconium that we bought a couple of decades ago for travel.
I like it because it sparkles and that's good enough for me.

Kay, you and your personality and humor are what sparkles most.
ReplyDeleteI must get my rings sized as they don't fit anymore. We probably will wait til next year, because there are so many other demands on our wallet right now. Is the ring in the picture your zirconium or the actual diamond? Can't tell the difference!
ReplyDeleteDina: Awww... thank you, dear friend. Shalom.
ReplyDeleteGigihawaii: It's the cubic zirconium. I haven't seen my actual engagement ring in such a long time. It looks very much like this one. Let's hope it hasn't rusted in the bank box.
We're all different. When we married I asked that Bob not give me a diamond. I've always preferred to wear a wide band.
ReplyDeleteWhen we left Texas for Oregon we split what few valuables we had between our two children. We travel lightly these days. Robbers would be sadly disappointed at our place.
I've never thought of using a man's wedding band, but yours looks fabulous. Does Art have a new one?
ReplyDeleteI don't own a wedding ring set and I lost 3 wedding bands (1 lost in Arakawa's parking lot oversized and literally fell from my finger/twice our home burglarized) over the years. So I am not interested in a replacement. I just wear not too expensive jewelry daily. All in all, jewelry is a pretty good investment if you can manage to hang on to them lol I've been thinking that solid gold and even solid silver (925) will become so much more expensive, so I'm glad I bought a few just because it was a good auction deal.

I'm like my granddaughter and I love all things that sparkle. I have some real and some fake and now that the fakes look as real as the real diamonds, I can't imagine why anyone would spend the money on the real ones. A friend has a big diamond and insured it, but doesn't worry about wearing it because people assume it is fake. I agree that I wouldn't want anything valuable lying around the house either. I don't collect silver either. Forget fine art--let the museums insure it.
ReplyDeleteYour cubic zirconium looks fabulous! I like looking at jewellery, but don't wear much of it.
ReplyDeleteAs I get older, and retired, I no longer care about putting on my rings either. I have reverted to wearing a simple band when I go out also. Sometimes, I even forget it.
ReplyDeleteKathyG: Yes, Art wears a wedding band. We bought it for $10. at a flea market in New Mexico when we were visiting my son. Before that he wore a band that our daughter, Tiffany made in her high school jewelry/craft type class until it broke.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people avoid wearing valuable jewelry on a regular basis these days. I always wear earrings but I haven't worn any kind of ring for a long time....I think it would bother me a bit to wear one now until I got used to it. Your cubic zirconium is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteI love sparkle, too. Maybe that is why I am so fond of bubbles...they are always so shiny and sparkly!
ReplyDeleteI love jewelry, problem is I keep retaining, losing water...sigh. Middle age. How joyful!
ReplyDeleteCheers from Cottage Country!
I have photographs of my mother dressed to the teeth and wearing the good stuff. I still have that good stuff, but like you don't usually wear it. I like garnets. The dark richnesses of them amuse me. A thief wouldn't get a lot here either.
ReplyDeleteI've never really cared for diamonds so my engagement has a sapphire in it. When we first got engaged we couldn't afford a real jewel so the ring had a turmaline in it. That lasted for twenty five years and then Christopher got a sapphire fitted instead. I wear both my wedding ring and my engagement ring all the time and would hate to be without them.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what happens to our knuckles that make them swell like that. I have many rings I can't get on my fingers any longer. And I, too, love sparkles! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm happiest with less expensive jewelry -- it means that I don't feel compelled to kill myself if I lose it. The exception is earrings -- I only wear 14K gold because allegedly one is less prone to infection. Don't know if that's true but I've never had one.
ReplyDeleteGee, I really like your cubic zirconium. It really looks nice with your wedding ring.
ReplyDeleteArthritis has made ring wearing a thing of the past for me but I appreciate other peoples sparkles.
Hey Kay!
ReplyDeleteWe have more in common than just our name! I too wear a CZ ring now, and you wouldn't believe how many people think it is a real diamond! Your hands look younger than mine! :-)
Terry and I could not afford a big diamond when we got married (and I only wanted a diamond if I could have a big one) so we have two gold bands. We both still wear them everyday. The burglars would be unhappy at our house, too, as there is no jewelry. The older I get the less I am interested in jewelry.
ReplyDeleteI like sparkle too, Kay. Our original wedding rings were stolen in a home burglary many years ago. We replaced them with plain wedding bands and, I too have a cz ring just like the one in your photo. It sparkles so, I like it.
ReplyDeleteI dropped by to say Hello and see how you’re doing. I hope you are okay and all is well with you. Have a fabulous week!
I like sparkle too, but not on my fingers. I put away my diamond and wedding band quite a few years ago now because the arthritis in my hands makes it impossible to wear rings. I do like diamond pendants ;-)
ReplyDeleteKay, what a great story! Very pretty "faux" sparkler!!
ReplyDeleteyes, we love shiny things!

My first wedding ring was a zirconium, it lasted longer than the marriage...lol! Now I have a diamond and a great husband.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a pretty ring and sparklies are lovely. Like you I keep my engagement ring and other more valuable jewelry in a safe deposit box with my son and daughter-in-law in mind, but I have some non-valuables at home. I have a marcasite ring which I love because it's so sparkly and some glass costume jewelry, one I treated myself to recently. Maybe I ought to do a post on some favorites one day.
ReplyDeleteWhat I see is how youthful your hands still look. Of course the rings are beautiful but I love your hand too. :)
ReplyDeleteWe just got robbed the night before last and they took all our electronics, but luckily no jewelry!
Funny..I just went and sold some old gold jewelry that I had..I don't like to wear much anymore..I am too busy with my hands...
