Dianne of Schmidleysscribbling commented that she thought I had good genes since my mother appeared to be in good shape. Well, it's true that her mom lived to be 87, but her dad passed away when he was not yet 70 of colon cancer. Neither of her parents smoked, ate very healthy (mostly vegetables and fish) and were constantly active. Mom says her dad's life was shortened from his 2 years in the Siberian prisoner of war camp. Also, as a Buddhist priest, his body was often pushed to some extremes.
Anyway, mom has always encouraged me to exercise and eat healthy. She and Art really think alike although she thinks Art overdid it with the marathons.
At 82, mom is looking pretty good, but this is what her day is like.
She gets up around 5:00 AM and eats her oatmeal, prunes and papaya breakfast with coffee. She watches the early Japanese language news and gets on the treadmill for about a half hour.
7:00 AM: Comes out and chats with us to inform us of the world condition. Goes out to do all the laundry, running in and out to check on what she's hung up on the clothes line. She's got to keep checking because the weather keeps changing. (Yes, she does the laundry every day except when there's a hurricane.)
In between all that she works on the yard, picking up leaves, pulling weeds, applying fertilizer, pruning plants, watering with her bucket and probably coaxing the plants to grow.
11:30 AM: Eats a small, healthy lunch. Sometimes she'll snack in between with yogurt or a banana.
12:00 Noon: Reads
1:00 PM: Naps
2:00 PM: Reads or watches educational videos that her sister, my Auntie Grace tapes for her.
3:00 PM: Starts preparing dinner. She doesn't know how to prepare quick meals. Her meals always take a lot of prep time.
5:00 PM: We eat dinner (mostly heavy on veggies and almost always with miso soup). She usually prepares fish, tofu or hamburger stretched with veggies. If I'm cooking, it's usually chicken. Art has his special veggie omelette and teriyaki sardines with Maui onions.
6:00PM: She's on the treadmill for a half hour.
6:30 PM: We bring her a little smoothie, fruit, or whatever treat somebody has given us for dessert. Yes, we do love our desserts.
7:00 PM: Bath
7:30 - 9:30 PM: TV, read or videos
And that's mom's day. She says that if she stops moving, her health will decline. I do believe she's a lot more active than I am. Art says I'd better hope nobody asks what my day is like.

How did we drift so far from the work ethic of our mothers? Yours sounds a lot like mine.
ReplyDeleteOh my, your Mom is an amazing lady. I think she could teach us all a thing or two.
ReplyDeleteok, your mom is a role model for healthy senior living, and thanks for sharing. Her day is delightful and I think you shared a secret to long life!
ReplyDeleteNot to alarm you but my girlfriend was telling me about a dad who passed away at 53. He was a marathon runner, although I don't believe he was running at the time. Maybe it does put strain on the heart over time.
I am like your mother in needing a routine to follow so that I feel like I'm making the most of every day. She's certainly a role model for the rest of us. But good genes does help as well.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like she is keeping both her body and mind very active....a great prescription for a healthy life and a very good role model.
ReplyDeleteI need to follow your mother's routine!!! ...and don't ask what my day is like either....
ReplyDeleteblessings,
Niki
your mom is the energizer bunny-good for her!
ReplyDeleteI am glad she is in such excellent health!
ReplyDeletewhat an example she sets, wow, Arts a joker sometimes isn't he!
ReplyDeleteCould your mom lend me a cup of energy?
ReplyDeleteYour Mom is so cute!!! She really does have a very full life! Good for her!! Long may she live!
ReplyDeleteYour mom is really something. Maybe some day she will slow down. Like when she turns 100!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. She looks like she could mother all of us non-stop. That's so nice to see her enjoying the gardening; what a contrast from her family's struggles when she was a child. I'm actually surprised her parents lived as long as they did, considering all they'd been through.
ReplyDeleteI still have 4 little bags of frozen fresh papaya I had shipped home to myself last October! They taste like morsels of sunlight! DrumMajor
Oh, yes! We could learn a lot from your mother, Kay!! What an amazing lady she is!! And, oh, yes! don't ask me about my day!!!!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
Your mother is a beautiful lady. You are truly blessed with such an amazing mother.
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspriration your mom is. (And adorable too.)
ReplyDeleteI am going to increase my activity after I finish the degree in history. Otherwise, most of my day is sitting and reading or on the PC. Dianne
Well, she sure puts me to shame. That she can survive the world condition and report on it is amazing in its self. Love that she walks on the treadmill barefoot.
ReplyDeleteShe really is doing everything right.
Think I will work on my schedule a bit.
She is my role model!

that knocked me over on the floor, why thankyou very much.
ReplyDeleteShe is absolutely amazing. She is certainly a wonderful role model for the rest of us. She has purpose, and she takes of herself in a way that is sensible and doable. I need to take a lesson out of her book.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about my mom today. At age 95, she is healthy and sharp, and she also has a routine, except she has never exercised. She cooks her meals. Simple, healthy meals seem to be the ticket for good health in so many ways.
Motivating and inspiring.Very much like my mom and my mother -in-law .May god always keep her in good health:)
ReplyDeleteI read recently of the health benefits of keeping to a daily routine. Your mom has it nailed down!
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to know what your Mom reads.
ReplyDeleteSo Kay, what's your day like? ;)
ReplyDeleteYour mom is a hard act to follow.
Your mom could be the poster girl for good living!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to laud your mom!
ReplyDeleteWe will belie the myth that all of us are going to be a drain on the system.
We took a short Daycation, shopping, really, and I spotted three or four people who had put laundry out.
Today it is -17 C. out there. I'm sure it is all frozen...
Cheers from Cottage Country!
That is a very healthy life style...she is so cute too...
ReplyDeleteYour mom has it all figured out!!!Wise lady.
ReplyDeleteHank Chapin: Mom reads history and current events, famous authors, mostly non-fiction.
ReplyDeleteDina: My day is definitely not like hers!
