Standing Ernestly

My wonderful commenter, Hank sent me a link to Ragan's PR Daily about five writers who stood while they wrote.

Listed were Ernest Hemingway, Vladimir Nabokov, Philip Roth, Lewis Carroll and Thomas Wolfe.  Someone added Victor Hugo.

Unfortunately aside from Philip Roth (who is still alive at 78) most didn't live all that long, granted they were mostly writers from a time when people didn't live as long as today.  Then again, Victor Hugo lived until he was 83.  Ernest Hemingway committed suicide at 61.

Of course they didn't have Pandora to move to while they worked.  I like standing and moving to Pandora music while I work.  If I don't move, my muscles tend to cramp up.

I'm looking for a perfect bar stool in case I need to sit occasionally.  Then again if I'm too tired to stand while I work on the computer, maybe I need to take myself away from it to give my eyes a break.

It's a thought.

  1. I remember this dentist's office where the staff sat on these exercise balls all day...think they had wheels on the bottom.

  2. I can't help it, I enjoy sitting while I read and write. I know it's more healthy to be standing, but I have usually been busy enough that it sure feels good to sit down! :-)

  3. I have never heard of standing while on computer but I do know I prefer to stand to do many things so it probably would be a great idea for me as well.I don't spend alot of time on computer because my eyes won't allow it so I never sit long enough to cramp up.They sell all those dining tables now with the high legged chairs maybe on of those would be a good choice, they look nice and have a back,

    1. Laurie, you are not going to believe this. I found a small table and 2 bar stool height chairs on Craigslist today. It's perfect for the computer. We worked on cleaning and sanding it today. Tomorrow we'll varnish it. Once it's set up I'll do a post on it to show you all how it looks.

  4. Standing is probably a lot healthier than sitting. According to David Sousa who does lots of studies on brain function and learning, after we sit for just 20 minutes, blood tends to pool in our feet and butt.

  6. A brilliant idea. I wish I could walk and knit.

  7. Linda above said she wishes she could walk and knit. In China, the women DO walk and knit. I'd like to be able to do that, too. I knew Hemingway stood as he wrote, bit I didn't realize the other writers did.

  8. Be careful. You could develop varicose veins, a common problem among waitresses and nurses, who are on their feet a lot.

    1. This is why I have to move while I'm standing. My legs get more tired if I'm just standing still. I am also going to be alternating with the other computer which has a chair. AND... I'm looking on Craigslist for a bar stool so I have more of an option.

    1. Well, I guess Hank didn't know any women who wrote while standing. They must be out there though. Maybe.

  10. Jane wrote on her lap. Don't know which modern women write standing up. Oh that's right, Kay in Hawaii. Dianne

  12. You can add Patrick O'Brian (author of "Master and Commander" etc) to your list - said he stood to write "like a Christian".

  13. I would love to stand, but I have a bad back and bad feet. My computer chair is even more comfortable than my recliner. And then there's bed...LOL
