I've been occasionally getting e-mails such as this:
Frankly, I don't like to endorse anything that I haven't tried myself. My blog is rather personal and not a commercial enterprise.
I'm also worried about scams and such. How do you KNOW who is legitimate? Why would a guest writer want to post on my blog? Wouldn't it be far better if they created their own. I don't understand.
What do you think?
"My name is ----- and I'm a freelance writer. I enjoy writing about traveling and fun adventures.I don't know what to think. I've also been asked if guest writers could post something about their new company on my blog.
I would love to contribute as a guest author, if you are open to that. I can send you some places where I've been published if you would like to see them.
Thank you for your consideration!"

I've had some of those too. I think they are spammy stuff really. Be wary!
ReplyDeleteThey're seeking access to your readers Kay. They won't be starting their own.
ReplyDeleteHehe, find out how much they'll pay you for a guest post, could be revealing.
If you're going to use guest posts, shanghai a reader into writing a story that fits in pretty much with what you write. (This is going to present some difficulty, as you write about your family & daily life!)
I like to read about you, your family and life in Hawaii. I feel I've got to know you a little through your blog and I enjoy visiting. I wouldn't fancy the idea of guest writers as I probably wouldn't be interested in what they have to say and it wouldn't be about you. Like Steve, I imagine they're probably not genuine individuals but companies hiding behind individuals.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jill above that you should be wary.....I think they are spam sent to many people looking for access to their readers.
ReplyDeleteI get those too and ignore them. They aren't real people but have some agenda that they are not telling you about. That's what I think, anyway. But I don't think I'm wrong. :-)
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this, but I would stay far away from it.
ReplyDeleteSounds spammy and infectious to me. I'd stay away.
ReplyDeleteI'd be careful, only trust those you know. I've gotten weird ones myself
ReplyDeleteMake this your blog and no one else's.
ReplyDeleteIt is spam plain and simple. I have gotten them and deleted them. Avoid like the plague.
ReplyDeleteSo annoying! I've came across this too and I personally felt - hey, why should you write on MY blog? Perhaps they're just wanting to showcase their stuff on other ppls property lol
ReplyDeleteI get them, too, and I ignore them and delete them immediately. Avoid like the plague indeed!
ReplyDeletelet them make their own!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and you get lots of readers so spammers and other bothersome folk will find you. I ignore these people and don't go check out their websites since it is often a scam and there is no reason to even respond to most of them. You can usually tell if someone honestly interested in your blog and the others...just delete and block. It is getting more and more common for me to get spam contacts and I wish there was a way to not recieve their emails!!
ReplyDeleteKay - I must be a poopy writer, and I have no blog, but I agree with your above buddies. Sounds weird. I imagine Cloudia would be the best to discuss and advise on this trend. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI get 2 or 3 a day, Kay. They want to raise their Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). This means that when someone searches for something, if you are high on Google ratings, it will raise theirs.
ReplyDeleteI have a high rating from when G8 was held in Muskoka. Everyone was searching for the G8 stupid fences. Since then, they want to put a link to their site on your site, which raises the SEO of their site. It is tacky. I blog for fun, and tell them that I charge $150 per post if they want to advertise, but that I worked hard to get my SEO.
Cheers from Cottage Country!
They want to capitalize on your readership! It's a compliment in a way, but I would be wary.
ReplyDeleteIf you wanted a guest writer, which I'm sure you don't, you have plenty of blogging friends you could invite. You don't need importunate strangers, who might be taking advantage of your good nature. And you do have such a wonderful good nature. Everyone else says they just delete these things, but you wondered about it, and asked questions. Good for you. Take the advice of everyone here.
ReplyDeleteK
I get those sometimes too. I agree that they are spam and want access. I don't respond, nor do I post the comments they make.
ReplyDeleteThank you, everybody! I shall follow your advice and erase any further requests I get in my e-mail.
ReplyDeleteperhaps, you should ask them for their reasons. That info could even provide material for another post. I've seen blogs that have had guest bloggers, but they were prominent blogs who didn't want their pages to be idle when the author took a trip or were busy for whatever reasons. Guest bloggers are usually asked, though, not the other way around.
ReplyDeleteI was very interested in this post. I get a lot of letters like this but I ignore them as I consider them spam. It's a sad fact that we have to be very wary and so I was interested in reading your other comments from blogging friends as it reinforced what I have always thought.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't go there...too scary.
ReplyDeleteBTW I met Daniel Inouye when I was a Congressional staffer. Wonderful man. He was also my Rep when I lived in Hawaii. I'm afraid you won't find his ilk on Capitol Hill again anytime soon.

My site has a lot of completely unique content I've either written myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any methods to help protect against content from being stolen? I'd truly appreciate it.
