Whenever we traveled back to Hawaii from Chicago in the wintertime we'd notice the humidity as soon as we stepped off the airplane. It would take a few moments to get used to it.
This time I noticed something a little peculiar when we were in California. As I've gotten older, my hair has gotten a little more wavy. The white hairs are annoyingly kinky.
When I woke up the following morning after arriving in California I noticed my hair had suddenly flattened down to my scalp. It stayed that way until I returned to Hawaii.
I used my iPhone and iPad to take these photos by myself since Art would probably think I was imagining things.
Can you see the difference? I tried taking it from both sides. I used to hear people complain how humidity made their hair frizzy. I believe it now. Since my hair is normally pretty straight I rather like the little wave I get in Hawaii.
Art's hair is curly to start off with so I don't think he noticed much difference. To be honest, I don't think he noticed the difference in mine either.
I know. I know. This isn't an earthshaking post. However, we really didn't do anything earthshaking in California. It was mostly just a happy family time which was really wonderful.

I see the wave:) Actually you look great in both photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Annie! :-)
DeleteQuite a difference:-) Very attractive either way.
ReplyDeleteOh thank you! I do like the bounce though.
DeleteWho knew? Can definitely see the difference but both are cute.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Patti! It was fun to see it spring up.
DeleteI like the wave in your hair! Yes, humiditiy does make a difference, now I'm thinking it must be better for wrinkles over the long term, right?
ReplyDeleteWith our constant sun, I'm probably going to wrinkle much faster than if we stayed in Illinois.
DeleteI agree with Christine, I think the humid air should be good for hair and wrinkles, you are a beautiful lady,
ReplyDeleteYou are too sweet Laurie, thank you.
DeleteThere is definitely a difference. Great job taking pictures of yourself.
ReplyDeleteIt was not easy! The iPad distorts your face if you're too close and it's hard to see how the photo is.
DeleteThey are all good pictures of you. I like a little moisture too, and it doesn't make my stick-straight hair so........ what?.....How about stick straight.
ReplyDeleteYes, humidity adds fullness and body to my hair.
ReplyDeleteI notice that when I go to Seattle, my hair curls more but in Utah I am straight and flat. Men do not notice...lol!
ReplyDeleteNo, you're not imagining this at all!! I have the same experience. I was quite happy with the low humidity effect on my wavy hair in the mainland a few years ago when I had lots more hair. But since thinning out, I don't mind Hawaii's humidity at all.
ReplyDeleteL...w
Are you thinning out also? Art and I are both losing hair by the handfuls. OK, I may be exaggerating, but at the rate I'm going I'll be needing a wig in another year or two.
DeleteThat is the one good thing about the constant dryness in Okieland, I know longer have to fight the frizz and the natural curls....so yes I get it!
ReplyDeleteMy hair is different in Washington than it is in Hawaii. I noticed it on my last trip. It's more wispy and "blow hair in the wind" here so I have to use some Brylcreem (a little dab'll do ya) about every three days or after I shampoo for sure. On the Mainland, my hair was more manageable and stayed the way I combed it. I've never had straight hair.
ReplyDeleteI used to notice the delicate odor of Plumeria flowers in the air when I landed in Hawaii. Sociologically speaking, when I return home to Hawaii I feel more comfortable with the ethnic mix that we have. The airports on the Mainland are so haole (Caucasian).
The biggest difference I notice is that Hawaii is not on anyone's mind over there. We don't matter very much. While over there, I received a text message telling me the Governor had named Brian Schatz as our new senator to replace Senator Inouye. I immediately texted back that I was totally amazed by this development. I was actually staggered by this unexpected development, yet no one even noticed over there. Conversely, when we lived in Ohio, my wife would always draw some interest when it was revealed that she came from Hawaii. People always wanted to talk about it. Go figgah....
And what about that Gary Okino thing? Makes me totally crazy and upset that we've got people like that on the Ethics board. He doesn't believe in the separation of church and state in Hawaii? What the heck? And Mayor Carlisle named him before leaving office? What the heck? What the heck? However, it's probably not big news on the mainland either.
DeleteGosh Kay, I haven't seen you in some 25 years and these photos here sure make me want to see you in person again.
ReplyDeleteyeah there's an obvious difference.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to tell Art. :-)
DeleteMy hair gets all flat when I travel, and I don't know why that is, unless it's a difference in shampoo. I can't take my usual with me, since I need to keep it to 3 ounces and take travel shampoo instead. Sigh. I like your Hawaii look the best, but you are pretty anyway...
ReplyDeleteThank you, DJan. Funny thing is I never noticed any waves in my hair when I was a kid. Must be an age thing.
DeleteThat is pretty amazing. Guess that's why I have such straight hair here in Cali. This winter has been so dry that I have noticed a lot of static electricity. Makes my hair stand straight up. Usually our winters are very damp, with lots of fog. It's been almost all sunshine this winter.
ReplyDeleteYes, I notice that, and I love the body humidity gives it. :)
ReplyDeleteMore than the waves, I agree that it's the body you get. I'm losing so much of my hair as I age, that I can use all the body I can get.
DeleteA friend of mine joked once that she wanted to move to Hawaii because her hair looked so great there. Her husband snapped, "We can't move there just because of your hair." Did I mention that he was an engineer? Talk about literal minded.
ReplyDeleteI'm on the Mainland now and my hair is lank, my skin is dry and wrinkled and my arthritis is acting up. Time to get home.
I was in my sister's wedding in Colorado and my hair never looked like before or since, so I know just what you mean! You don't know humidity unless you live in Georgia.
ReplyDeleteBut I totally agree with some of your commenters above, you look good in California or Hawaii, my dear!!
Thank you so much, Kay. That's very kind of you.
DeleteYour hair looks better in Hawaii.
ReplyDelete~L.
I never noticed my hair difference before because I always cut my hair very short. Now that I've let it grow a little longer, it's more visible.
DeleteYou are very pretty and sweet lady
ReplyDeleteMary L
Awww.. thank you, Mary. You are very kind.
DeleteI have never really noticed the weather/humidity impact on my hair, except that when we visited Colorado in winter we had all kinds of static and fly away hair. It's never that dry here. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little and my mother or grandmother took me to the zoo, I would have to go ALONE inside the big old Lincoln Park Conservatory because the tropical hall was too steamy for them. It would have destroyed their artificially-curled hairdo. I hated that.
