When we moved back to Hawaii, Art was thrilled to discover that an old Honokaa school friend of his was living just a couple of blocks away from us.
Art and Morris have a standing morning coffee date every few weeks that Art always looks forward to. It's a guy thing. I like having regular girl type get-togethers too.
A week ago, two of Art's classmates suddenly passed away. It was a shock! He and Morris had just seen them last year at their 50th high school reunion.
Morris has always said he is determined to exercise, lose some weight and be healthier. The difficulty was in getting started. I know what that's like!
Perhaps it was the shock of losing their friends, but Art has decided he wants Morris to stay healthy enough so that he'll be able to continue their coffee sessions for a long time. He persuaded, cajoled, convinced Morris to go walking with him twice a week and Morris agreed.
They walked three miles today! I was amazed. I don't like walking more than a couple of miles and warned Art not to push it. He insists it was Morris that kept walking.
I guess Art will be walking with Morris in the morning and with me in the evening. He was also trying to convince my brother to exercise more which did make an impact, I think. Because Dennis knew he'd be doing the Aloha Run, he had to train for it. It isn't the race so much as the journey to it that is keeping us healthier and making us willing to get out there and stay in shape.
Hmmm... who knows? Could it be that Morris will be walking with us next year at the Great Aloha Run?

That would be great! And yes, it's exercise and eating right that gives us a chance to stay around longer. Art is a great role model for so many. Yay for Art! :-)
ReplyDeleteKay I do believe exercise is a large part of keeping us healthy and alive.
ReplyDeleteso important and self control is what it's all about...
ReplyDeleteHow nice for Morris that he has Art to encourage him. Sometimes all that is needed is someone to
ReplyDeletewilling to join us. Knowing someone is waiting keeps us from postponing exercise and re-seeking the couch. Kudos to Art.
So great that they have each other. "Old" friends are the best (and I don't mean age-wise). Somehow knowing someone who has known you that long is so very special.
ReplyDeleteAnd three miles is commendable!!!
What a great thing Art is doing for his friend. It is so helpful to have someone to encourage us in doing all those things we need to do to stay healthy.
ReplyDeleteIt is great to have friends that encourage us to do the healthy things we know we should do, but don't always do without a little pushing from friends! Morris is fortunate to have Art as a caring friend! Have a great weekend, Kay!!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear that Art has lost two friends in such a compressed timeframe. Don't think it usually happens like that. I'm afraid dear Art is going to outlast them all since he's in such good shape. Now he and his buddy are "hanging out in the street!" Happy walking! DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping they both stay healthy.
DeleteIt always helps having a buddy to walk with. Or an ipod. I've lost mine and my walks seem to take longer without the distraction.
ReplyDeleteWell done. From small beginnings...
ReplyDeleteI used to walk a lot when I had no car. After I bought a car at age 33, I haven't walked very much and tend to be sedentary. Kudos to Art for thinking of his friend's health.
ReplyDeleteIt is always so sad when we lose friends, especially those you have known such a long time. I wish Art and Morris many coffee mornings together.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit. It is quite possible that it was the same kind of bird you saw in New Zealand. The fairy wren is also insectivorous.
Have a great week and weekend.
It really helps to have someone to exercise with. Walking is my favorite exercise. Terry and I are both good walkers.
ReplyDeleteMichael Moore started walking every evening and has lost pounds without doing anything but adding this to his schedule.
This is absolutely inspiring. The main focus of my talk with the doc Monday will be telling her that I want to walk.
ReplyDeleteArt should start a walking group!
ReplyDeleteYes, let's walk as much as we can!
ReplyDeleteI didn't leave a comment but I loved your Aloha Run, loved your post about it and glad you were able to do it and enjoy it!
Also, I hated that those horrible salespeople intruded on your sweet Mother recently, shame on them!
Take care.
Love,
Kay
Recently I saw two older guys (probably my age lol) walking around the park together. I smiled because usually women walk the park in pairs. Now I see why...
ReplyDeleteL...w
Art is an amazing man. Not only does he take good care of himself, he takes care of so many others too.
ReplyDeleteExercise is vital for me. I allows me to control my weight and it keeps my body working. Move to be able to keep moving.
What a mitsvah that you two care about and care for others. Who knows, maybe you have saved a life.
