Tiffany often encourages KC to make her own greeting cards to send to us which we always enjoy getting.
This year was no different and Art and I received our own personal valentine from our little granddaughter.
I decided to give her some positive reinforcement and made a Valentine card for her too.
Tiffany said KC really loved it and was awed by my effort. Well... KC is in kindergarten. Even if I scribbled something, she would probably have liked it.
KC's enjoyment spurred Art and me to go to the Ben Franklin craft store where I bought a set of watercolors. I've been enjoying the watercolor paintings of Laurie from I love a cloudy day and thought I'd try my hand at painting again after several decades. Once I started, I remembered how hard it is for me to get what's in my brain onto paper.
It was Art's idea for me to cut that hole on the front of the card so KC would be able to see a photograph of her face through it.
We'll be sending it to KC before March 3rd which is traditionally Girl's Day.
Art is in charge of Easter so he'll be making that card, but he's choosing to use colored pencils instead. I'm seeing a rather original looking chick starting to take shape.
Hmmm... I wonder what other card I can make now that I've got all these tubes of watercolors?

With you guys it keeps getting sweeter all the time.
ReplyDeleteDo water colors really come in tubes?
Did you make that card? It's really good! I love the idea of the cutout. I never heard of Girl's Day before. :-)
ReplyDeleteoh Kay its beautiful and I know she will love it! How clever doing the cut out! I wish you would try your hand at some landscapes from your surroundings, that would be lovely!
ReplyDeleteYour card is beautiful! What a great idea. I think there are homemade cards for my grandchildren coming now now too!
ReplyDeletehow creative, I thought you were making computer card with clipart but you are really being artistic! good for you!
ReplyDeleteI always had Jill make cards for her grandparents. I wish a few were still around. Now occasionally Isaac and Irene make cards for us too. they are treasures that get put away for safe keeping.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid my talents do not include drawing or painting. I do want to get back to making more cards using my photography. Maybe you have inspired me!
What a nice idea, Kay! I still have my son's cards from a long time ago. Please tell us more about "Girls Day." Is there a Boys Day?
ReplyDeleteDrumMajor
They've combined Girls' Day and Boys' Day in Japan from what I was told a while ago. They now just call it Children's Day which is celebrated on May 5th which used to be Boys' Day. I've just written our friend in Tokyo to find out if they do anything for Girls' Day now.
Deletegreat job, much better than what I can do
ReplyDeleteYour family and friends will soon commission cards. It happened to my friend!
ReplyDeleteI love those homemade cards. I have many my granddaughters made for me. Precious. Dianne
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful card, Kay!! You are so clever! These will definitely be keepers for her to enjoy for years to come!! Certainly better than anything I could do!! I love it!
ReplyDeleteWow, you are an incredibly talented artist, Kay. Kudos to you.
ReplyDeleteThat's very kind of you... but I wish it were true.
DeleteThey also have colored pencils that are watercolors. You can dip them in water first for one effect, or brush them with water after drawing for another effect, or leave them dry. Fun to experiment with. They also have "penny"postcards that are actually real watercolor paper, so you could send your granddaughter illustrated messages whenever you get the urge.
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe that an art supply store is THE most enjoyable place to shop, bar none. There is no end of fascinating things to stimulate the imagination. I am a fan of Hawaiian Graphics on Beretania Ave. at McCully St.
My two grandaughters are now in college, but I still have some of their pictures in a file folder I keep called--ta da!--PICTURES.
I haven't done artwork in such a long time. I forgot how much fun it can be, and also how frustrating. The watercolor pencils are something I've never tried. I'll see if I even pick up my brushes again. :-)
DeleteGrandmother and Granddaughter made beautiful cards. You can each put the other's in your treasure boxes.
ReplyDeleteLovely card you made Kay! And KC's cards are cute and colourful too.
ReplyDeleteMy BW Sandy puts lots of energy into creating original cards for many occasions. Judging by the many positive responses, she, and your folks, are on the right track in making cards from scratch.
ReplyDeleteBlessings...
ReplyDeletethe ones from the heart are always the bests.....
I don't make cards. I make earrings....
have a great day.
peace.

Wow the cards came out so beautiful and professional!!...you should really continue. Art skills must run in your family (I recall your brother's drawings). I don't have half the talent otherwise I would have majored in Art. After a couple art studio classes at UH I decided I could not make a living selling what I make lol
