Our daughter called us a few days ago to tell us the temperature there was 62 degrees! In January! That is just incredible for Chicago.
She took some photos of the hyacinths that we'd planted along the side of the house.
This is NOT good! Chicago can get snow all the way up until April. They can also get a deep freeze into February, maybe March.
These hyacinths were fooled and may suffer the consequences. On the other hand, they've been fooled before and they're still there so perhaps Mother Nature is providing them with some sort of protection for these crazy global warming days.
The only problem with these super warm, rare winter days in the Midwest is that a cold front is likely to come through and produce horrible, scary, destructive weather conditions. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Besides, my daughter has more challenging things on her mind and hands right now.
This will be the topic for tomorrow's post.

I hope your daughter is all right. I'll find out tomorrow. It was incredibly hot here in Florida on Wednesday, and yesterday (Thursday) it suddenly got really cold. A freeze warning is out after almost breaking temperature records. The weather is really getting strange...
ReplyDeleteI wonder what is going on with the weather these days. Hope all is well with your daughter and her family.
ReplyDeleteoh no, maybe she could cover them with some straw if the weather takes another turn, I certainly hope all is well with you daughter,
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, when it gets cold again the tips of the plants will freeze, but the rest of them will be ok.
ReplyDeletethe winter is unbalanced these days
ReplyDeleteMother Nature is sending us some curve balls lately.
ReplyDeleteYes the weather over here has been crazy...we're back to the deep freeze for now.
ReplyDeleteyes, our weather seems to be changing. That is one reason I rarely have apricots. We have been getting another freeze after a warm spell and that kills the beginning blossoms. It probably won't harm the hyacinths, though, as they seem to be able to withstand a great deal of cold.
ReplyDeleteBy now the cold front has probably hit. We here are to be in the 70's.
ReplyDeleteweather is unpredictable...
ReplyDeleteMy daffodils have begun to poke through, but that is not unusual here in California for this time of the year. I am hopeful for all my bulbs this year as it has been very cold here which is unusual for us, but now that the days are getting longer, our temps are getting higher. 70 predicted for today.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Wisconsin in the 60's, and we did not see so much as a green shoot from the last hard frost until the beginning of May. So climate change is real.
ReplyDeletehope all is well there.

Kay - Kansas City is having alternate days of warm weather, then plunging to -6 last night. My neighbor's bulbs were poking up 2 weeks ago, and I told them to get back down. I did see a gardener magazine note about this, which said just to leave them alone, and they'll still do OK by the time the "real" spring comes around.

Oh my goodness, things popping up! The ground here is frozen until May. Well, maybe the irises start coming up in April, but nobody plants anything until Canada's May 24 long weekend.
ReplyDeleteAmazing. I love hyacinths, hope they don't freeze.
K
Nice new photo of you in your sidebar, by the way.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Glenda! I figured I may as well update it since my hair is growing out a bit.
DeleteBulbs are beginning to emerge from the soil here too, but that is right on schedule for us and we don't get the extremes that the Midwest does.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I wonder what Mrs. H would do with these rebellious hyacinths.
ReplyDeleteMy wild narcissus flowers in the yard were covered in snow for Jerusalem's rare snow day, and they never quite recovered. But they will come up again next winter, as usual, as normal.
We'll miss Mrs. H this spring.
DeleteWow. Some of my iris have begun, but will freeze today, with -15 again! sigh.
