Almost a week away from D Day! Departure Day...the departure of our household goods, that is. The house is in an ordered chaos. One room is set aside for the things we'll be packing into our Honda van for our son in New Mexico. At this point, it looks like there's no way it's all going to possibly fit. We should do a test run but I'm not looking forward to it. It's so exhausting to carry everything into the van and then take it out again since we're not leaving until the 3rd week of June.
We're trying to set aside areas in a few rooms for top and low priority as to what goes first into the moving container. It's only a 20 foot container so we've got to be very careful. But it's hard. We've spent the last few months shredding tons of papers....33 years of tax documents, financial statements, etc. We managed to wear out one shredder and had to buy a heavy duty one.
I'm one who does not like disorder. I like things organized and in their little places. My daughter has inherited that trait from me and run with it. My son is more like my husband, I think. They're quite organized in their head, just not in their physical surroundings. They know where things are even though it doesn't look it. I tried everything I could to teach my son to come around to my way of thinking but alas.... the genes were too strong.
The idea of moving is now more real and becoming rather painful. We were babysitting our granddaughter in Chicago and had a great time at Grant Park. She loved pushing her stroller by herself. As we were leaving their condo we heard our daughter calling out to her. We turned and saw that she had followed us barefeet to the elevator. The look on her little face is etched into our memory. It said, "Why are you leaving? I want to go with you."
But I can't think about that now. I'll think about it tomorrow.
I know you must be going through a very difficult time right now, both emotionally and "organizationally." Moving to a new location is hard enough, but moving to an island in the Pacific has to be even harder! And that precious little grand daughter....
ReplyDeleteI feel those heartstrings tugging--hopefully there'll be lots of visits back and forth!!
ReplyDeleteOnly a week away!!! Isn't it amazing what we manage to collect--love the part "they're quite organized in their head"-- I like things in their proper places too--leads to a little "friction" every now and then!! ;)
With e-mail, blogs, videos, photos, telephone, and the rare visit, you learn to live with the fact that your kids are on a different continent. They don't seem as far away as they really are. It'll be OK.
ReplyDeleteMusings, this seems to be the day for tagging. I received an "award" from a blogger friend today and have to pass it on to my favorite five. Please go over to Jerusalem Hills to pick up your "You make my day" award. Mazal tov! hehe
I have a bit of an inkling of how you feel as we are planning a move that will take us about four hours drive away from our sons. It just doesn't seem right to be moving away from your children does it, it should be them trying to get away from you!
ReplyDeleteDon't get overwhelmed with moving, and remember you will be able to keep in touch with family by computer. There is a skype program that lets you see and talk for free. Check it out, my friend and i in Sweden talk weekly. Good luck with moving!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much everyone. I really appreciate all your kind words. It's so wonderful to have friends supporting you and when those friends come from around the world, it doesn't get much better. Did you by any chance notice my last line as being from Gone With the Wind? :-) I often believe in it, though.
ReplyDeleteIt's getting closer, so that means you are closer to having it over and being settled again. We moved 2 years ago, so I know how difficult it is, probably to a lesser extent, as we moved within state. It's sad to be moving away from the children, but I predict that as others have said there will be frequent visits and lots of communication. Thank goodness, it's not like the old days any more. Long distance calls aren't a rarity, and the email is instant. I missed the line from 'Gone With the Wind', and I loved the movie and the book.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog, and for the comments. I just wonder if your brother still has tiny little scars, either way, I'll bet he was more careful around sewing machines after that incident.
Moving is very difficult. I feel your anguish and axiety. God bless.
ReplyDeleteI found my way to you via Jerusalem Hills - Dina, that is. This miraculous internet. Your description of yourself in "about me" rings bells with me! A new journey is unfolding for you. May it be blessed.
ReplyDeleteI hate moving too Kay and we moved 4 years ago after 25 years. Oh, the stuff we had to go through. But it will be the most difficult to leave your granddaughter. I am sending you strength via the internet.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand having immigrated to OK from England in 2005. It was a wrench, plus I had to downsize all the possessions acquired over my 39yrs!
ReplyDeleteI use the webcam alot with my family back in the Uk and it really helps, so make sure you are all setup for that before you go. My mum is about 16hrs away and it's hard, but her visits are even better due to having so little time together usually.
Hang in there, just keep thinking about where you'll be come July.
