Now really... Don't you wonder how they allow this in Hawaii? There's a strict Click It or Ticket law here but darn if you can't have kids ride in the back of trucks totally unrestrained. We've seen quite a number of kids (grown-ups, too) riding happily in the back of trucks on the freeways and nobody thinks anything of it.
But dogs? Oh yes, they must be strapped in some way to the back of the truck. Does this make sense? I suppose some people would prefer there not being too many laws but this seems to be disaster waiting to happen.
I wonder if other states allow it, too.

You kidded me that marathoners often finished in less than 3 hours. Well, there you have it! My "racing" chip has recorded my time as UNDER 3 hours. Woohoo!)
It's not allowed in Washington State, and for good reason. But I think dogs can do it here.

ReplyDeleteBrings memories of my livestock work at Heifer Ranch: I'd be sitting in the back of the truck (which lacked a tailgate) restraining a sheep or goat or pig that had to be transported somewhere within the ranch.
Our only rule there was not to sit on rails, although sitting on the floor of a livestock truck was sometimes pretty sh..., I mean dirty. hehe
I honestly do not know if it is legal in Florida, but personally feel that it should not be. Of course, I do remember doing things like that as a kid growing up in the country and we thought nothing of it, but it feels different now. Any living, breathing thing should be restrained, in my opinion, front or back.

ReplyDeleteDina: I have to admit in all honestly that I've ridden in the back of a truck unrestrained. It's rather fun. However, now that I'm older and wiser I don't think I want my granddaughter to do it.
Joyce: I think you would know if there wasn't a law because you'd see people riding around like I do all the time in the back.

ReplyDeleteMaine has a law that no one rides in the back of trucks, I am not sure about dogs. I do not like seeing dogs riding like that as they can fall out, jump out, etc. and end up with disastrous results.

I'm always for animal safety and all but sometimes I really think people put animals over kids... it makes me sad.

I have many fond memories of riding in the back of pickups, but that was in a very rural area, many--many--years ago. It seems very dangerous to do on a freeway.
ReplyDeleteYou should be very proud of your walk. You walked for more than 3 hours (all told) while recovering from a nasty bug. Lots of people couldn't do that.
congrats on a great run/walk sick, just think what you could do if you were well. I agree about restrains. When I was 20 I was riding in a car without seatbelts-no one had them and we were in an accident. I fractured my back but with seat belts I wouldn't have. So I wear my seat belt always and taught my kids to do likewise.

ReplyDeleteI don't see too many people riding in the back of the truck these days but then again it is the middle of winter. Not sure what the law's are in this state but it should be banned as it's far too dangerous. You have to make a lot of sudden stops with all the traffic we get and the thought of what could happen to people makes me cringe. Dogs are common place and I always hope they are safely strapped in. Great timing on the race. I am so impressed. I most definitely would not make it under three hours, maybe by sundown ;)
