I got this message from a friend a bit ago and thought I'd pass it along. I just registered our home phone and cellphone and it was very quick.
REMEMBER: Cell Phone Numbers Go Public next month.
REMINDER.... all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls.
..... YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
Even if the message is saved on your phone, you will be charged for the minutes to listen to it.
To prevent this, call the following number from your cell
phone: 888-382-1222 .
You can register home phones too.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your
time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the
cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a
different phone number.
DOGGONE IT! I just checked Snopes.com as one of my commenters suggested and discovered that it's true that it's FALSE. There's no deadline for getting your phone registered and telemarketers are still blocked from calling cellphones. I'm sorry about this. I should have checked Snopes first before posting this. Sigh... I'm still glad I did the phone block for myself anyway.
Jon (my son), are you my Anonymous commenter?
He usually watches my back for me.
What a wonderful day you had yesterday. That's one of the great things about having guests isn't it, that you get to see things you might not have bothered with on your own. What a pain freeing up your mobile phone numbers will be - I haven't heard about anything like that happening here in the UK, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't
ReplyDeletesounds like a brain-teaser.Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder, Kay. This is important.
ReplyDeleteI think I've done this...

This is not true but it goes around annually or oftener and has since the early days of the 'Net. Right now on Snopes' Top 25 Urban Legends List.

I have always had my phones on the DNC.
I love Snopes. I always visit their site when I get things that don't sound right. They really keep an eye out for hoaxes.
Sorry everybody. I did check snopes.com just now and my Anonymous commenter is correct. Still, I think it's good to register your phone on the Do Not Call List anyway to prevent telemarketers from calling your home phone.
ReplyDeleteI've finally learned -- I think -- to check Snopes whenever I receive one those "helpful, warning" messages and nine times out of ten they turn out to be just like this one -- which I got as well from a good friend here in Seattle. Ah, we do live and learn, don't we?
ReplyDeleteI have used the DNC list for both my home and cell phone. Now that works! No more offers at dinner time for pantyhose, septic tank cleaning specials, rug cleaning demos.....
ReplyDeleteYeah indeed... this is very helpful. Once registered, telemarketers are to refrain from calling that number. If they violate this request the consumer can file a complaint on the National Do Not Call Registry website. Registering your home number, will stop most, but not all telemarketing calls.
