My job is to patch and caulk the holes and spaces and then later... paint. You can understand then why I've got at least 5 changes of clothes with paint stains all over them. We decided to install the rosettes at the corners of the door molding to make it easier to cut and match. I think I like it.
Art says the problem with home renovation is he finally understands how to do something when he's almost finished with it and then he has to move on to another task that he has to learn how to do.
Kay, it could be a source of income for Art if he chooses to become a carpenter for hire. It's very hard to find a competent carpenter in Hawaii.

ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea for the corners of the doors - I think the idea of keeping things as simple as possible, whilst still remaining attractive is spot on.
ReplyDeleteI like the rosettes but the last ones I put up have about an inch of space around them. Must be different trim. I like the louvered doors but they are a bear to paint/finish. Good luck Kay. I can understand why you got that finishing job. Your hubby is admitting he has less patience. :)I would be the same. I got Patty in training to be a carpenter.

ReplyDeleteMy husband has said the same thing; he learns a skill by doing it, then poof, it's now a skill he no longer needs! Not for another ten years or so anyhow, by which time he's completely forgotten.
The rosettes were a great choice I think.

Peggy: He is pretty wise. Do you know it's a similar molding to the one in the Illinois? Not as wide but similar.

Amanda: We wanted everything to be very simple in the house but so far, I'm having a hard time keeping to that theme as far as furniture goes. It's looking a bit too busy.
Abe: We were advised to get the louvered doors for the closets because of the high humidity in the islands. Things start to mildew if you don't allow for ventilation.
Susan: The only reason for choosing the rosettes was they were easier to do than trying to match those corners so there woudn't be spaces.
Kavita: I feel badly not being able to do as much right now because of my foot but Art has always been a very focused worker.
Sherri: Thank you, Sherri. Art learned to do a lot of this stuff when he worked on the finishing of our house in Illinois. However, after 20 years, he's forgotten how he did it. Now he's relearning again.
Cheryl: We do like to work together and it's a lot easier to do this stuff if you have an apprentice that you can order around beside you.
it's so great that you both can do so much of that work by yourselves...what colour will you paint the doors?
ReplyDeleteChristine: We're going to leave most of the closet doors the natural color with just a coat of varnish. We have to paint two of the closet doors white because of some imperfections and we'll paint all the rest of the doors white. I'm NOT looking forward to this.
