The screen was torn on this old door and it wasn't exactly burglar safe so we decided to get a solid door instead. This photo was taken before we remodeled our kitchen.
Steve did an excellent job as we knew he would. This was a much trickier door to put up than the interior doors that Art installed upstairs. While we served Steve lunch we picked his brains about other problems around the house. He looked at everything and stared at things from different angles and promptly told us what to do. It was fabulous! Many of the solutions were really simple.
Folding doors that would not close smoothly? (WD40 and trim the bottom.)
Door handles facing the wrong way? (Put a small paper clip in the handle and reset them. We didn't know you could do that.)
Lots of keys for different outside door locks? (Smart key! You can program the locks to take one key. Sheesh!)
And what did I get to teach Steve? Craigslist! No kidding! That was fun!
Our next project will be to replace the windows downstairs. Steve taught us how to measure the window openings for our window order and we'll hire him for a day to help get us started when they arrive.
It's really great having a carpenter who is willing to help you do your home projects by yourself.
I did make him my special smoothie, too which he liked and he gave me the helpful hint to keep the pineapple cores in the smoothie because of the good fiber. We were quite pleased to have such a productive Saturday although Steve is the one who did all the work. I sure wish I could adopt that guy!
I love tool men! All the men in my family are tool men. I'd be a whole lot poorer if such men didn't exist!
ReplyDeleteYour new kitchen cabinets and that door are looking good. Natural wood is my favorite look.
Lucky you indeed.
ReplyDeleteJon's banner photo is great.
Quilly: We're very fortunate that Art is willing to learn how to do carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, etc. Amazes me all the time.
ReplyDeleteDina: I am, I am. Thank you for the compliment. Jon will appreciate it.
My sister-in-law has been having trouble with her carpenter. He keeps coming up with excuses to not come by. Finally, she told him to take his tools home so she could hire someone else to finish the job.
ReplyDeleteBTW, that door is exactly like our front door -- same design and size but painted white!
ReplyDeleteSteve kind of people are tough to find and it sounds like this Steve was your treasure.
ReplyDeleteSteve sounds like a great handyman. We need more like him. He also is knowledgeable about smoothies. That makes him extra-special!
ReplyDeleteThe world needs more of him--no wonder he's busy! Being knowledgeable is one thing, but friendly too just makes it.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to remember his pineapple tip; I've been throwing cores into the compost all this time, not thinking of the blender for a smoothie. What a great use for them!
Kay,finally you have got the perfect helping hands you and Art need...Steve sounds like a true blessing.I love your posts on your house make-over because we too get to learn a lot from them.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing all those tips. I wish we were more handy, those men are invaluable.
ReplyDeleteadopt him fast, he's irreplacible. great resource, you are always busy working on one project or another. good for you. kitchen looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteSteve is certainly a real treasure! And your remodeled kitchen looks fabulous from what I can see. You certainly have transformed that house.
ReplyDeleteGigi: We were going to paint our door white, too but then saw that the wood sort of matched our cabinets.
ReplyDeleteAbraham Lincoln: Steve is definitely a treasure!
Jean: It's so great to have a carpenter we can trust.
Susan: I used to throw the core away because I didn't want Art to chip his tooth eating them. He really likes the cores. However, I guess if you put it into a smoothie, it'd be OK.
Kavita: When I have time I should look for some before and after photos of the kitchen.
Christine: I do count my blessings in Art and Steve.
Lin: Thanks, Lin! I'd adopt Steve in a minute if I could.
Linda: Thanks, Linda! The house is really different from how it used to be since we added a second floor to this house.
Kay, your grandfather was quite a man! Where can I find your posts about him again?
ReplyDeleteThe guidebook where I learned about our saintly rabbi's visits to Jesus Hilfe is titled "The righteous shall come to no harm!".
Dina: I mentioned my grandfather in this post: http://travelerswife.blogspot.com/2008/09/little-personal-history.html
ReplyDeleteLovely door and what I can see of the kitchen, matches well. How great it must be to have a special carpenter! Besides Art of course!
ReplyDeleteCheryl: Thank you for your comment. I decided to post the rest of my kitchen to show you how much work we put into it and still have to do.
ReplyDeleteKay..You are so nice, I am not surprised that someone would be happy to give you advice... Michelle
