This year, everyone I asked said they couldn't walk with me. My brother has gout and everybody else has knee problems or other health issues. Art is planning to run (of course). He always does and wanted me to do the walk so that I would get out there and train for it. He was even willing to (heaven forbid) walk with me.
Sad, but true... I am a lazy exerciser and it takes all of Art's perseverance to get me to exert the energy to push myself to get in shape.
Well... I told Art I wouldn't be doing the Run/WALK because I sure as heck don't want to get up at 4:00 in the morning and walk 8+ miles by myself! And I didn't want him sacrificing his run for me.
The deadline for the early entry is this week and I was secretly, happily, relishing the thought of sleepily waving goodbye, or maybe just opening one eye, or maybe no eyes and just wave to Art when he left for the Aloha Run in February, 2012.
The phone rang today and I saw Art talking to someone. Why was he looking so excited? Did we win something?
Nope, it was cousin Renee! She said that despite her sensitive knees, she wanted to try the Aloha Run and would train for it. She said she'd even bring a cane or Nordic sticks to help her. Aaaack! What? I don't get to sleep? Did I tell you I'm not a morning person?
But you know what? I'm just so in awe of the fact that Renee is wanting to make this effort despite the challenges she'll have to deal with. She's put me to shame. I will be doing this because Art went straight to the computer and signed me up before anybody could change their mind.
I've put my brother on standby (to pick us up) in case either of us can't finish. However, Renee says we're going to Finish no matter what.
Wow! I'd better get out there and get myself in shape.

Yay! Go for it! I have never participated in any run of any kind, although I did join the Marathon Clinic back in 1982. After experiencing chest pain, however, I was told by my doctor that running is very stressful and not to do it. He recommended swimming. I stopped swimming in the 1990s... Nothing has replaced it.
ReplyDeleteGood on ya, Kay. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteArt wasn't about to let you escape that walk. What a guy:) Have fun.
ReplyDeleteGood for you. Will be awaiting word on your progress. Perhaps you have inspired me enough to get me exercising again and I'll send you all my positive energy:)
ReplyDeleteFantastic! You are so fortunate to have a hubby who cares enough about you to push you into exercising. You know how I feel about that! Good for you, Kay!
ReplyDeleteWell, of course, I recognize that
ReplyDeletea) your husband loves you a bunch and wants you fit and healthy,
and
b) Renee is a saint,
however,
I totally relate to losing your cozy sleep in and being rather allergic to exercise esp. early in the morning....tis a sad thing. ;-)
hugs,
Niki
Good for you, Kay! I'm holding good thoughts for your and Renee!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
good motivation, you have a hubby who loves you...
ReplyDeleteI hear you Kay, I am not a morning person either. Well, good luck to you and Renee.
ReplyDeleteI'm like you. If I didn't have to, I wouldn't exercise at all.
ReplyDeleteLike they say, its the spirit that counts.
ReplyDeleteAll the best to you and all that take part.
Its little things like these that make up life :-)
How brave you are, Kay! You are doing such a great job!
ReplyDeleteI heard some disturbing news that a great amount of debris caused by the tsunami is on its way to Hawaii, and that the coral reef runs a risk of being destroyed. Is it true? Such a pity.
Hahaha Kay, and you thought you could get out of this one! Not so easy!
ReplyDeleteWell done Kay, you're doing this even though you don't really feel like it. And well done Renee, bad knees and all. I applaud you both, clap, clap, clap, clap ;)
ReplyDeleteJust don't push yourself dangerously in training or on race day!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to our athlete Art - and the SAME goes for him too (with concern and Warm Aloha from Waikiki
