It really is hard to find decent office furniture for affordable prices in Hawaii. Therefore, I've been checking Craigslist for furniture every so often.
Since we have a new desk top computer, I needed a desk to put it on. The folding table just doesn't look very nice with our cherry bedroom.
This afternoon I checked Craigslist and saw a desk going for $25.00. I showed it to Art. He was very dubious since the last two we went to look at were priced at around $100 and were in horrible condition. I didn't even want them as temporary desks.
But this seemed to have possibilities judging by the photos. I wrote to Bob and asked why he was selling it for so low. He said it was priced to sell. I asked if it had termites and he said none that he knew of.
He did say he had a couple of other interested people so I told him we'd be right over. He promised not to sell it to anybody else until we got there.
Bob lives high up the mountain in Kaimuki... way high up. We'd never been in that high altitude, high priced area. When we saw the fancy houses we didn't know what to expect.
The huge, beautiful gate had us even more puzzled. Why would somebody who lived here want to sell something on Craigslist? (I respectfully did not take a photo of his house or area to insure his privacy.)
Well, we met Bob and he was just the nicest fellow ever! We liked him right away. He and his friend helped us load the desk in our van and we headed home. He joked that he hadn't seen any termites but if there are, it would be our problem now.
Going down the hill we could see a different view of Diamond Head.
What an amazing place to live. If I had a trillion dollars I wouldn't mind living here too.
It really is sort of just what I was looking for. It may be particle board with veneered paper, but it's in great condition. I've had to glue down some of the veneer and we're going to have to cut the back out of the cabinet on the left because the desk does not have enough depth for the tower to fit.
But this will do very nicely until I find the PERFECT desk for the perfect price.

Nice. I think it looks great!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you got a great deal, Kay.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great desk for the price, Kay. Hawaii is great for recycling and sustainability, the fact that it's not easy to get new stuff.
ReplyDeleteThere are tons of desks for sale on Craigslist, but it's hard to find exactly what you're looking for in Hawaii.
DeleteIt looks wonderful, Kay!I am also looking for a place for my new computer, as the laptop didn't use much space.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment! Yes it was great to walk with Dina. I met her every day at around ten o'clock, then we went to the busstop and took the 10:15 bus to Jerusalem. In the evening we had a meal together. Every day there were some new historical sites to see.
Good deal. Enjoy your nice new desk. AND you got to see how the other "half" lives.
ReplyDeleteAnd that other half does live well. :-)
DeleteWell, at the price you paid for this one, you can afford to have it while you look for the perfect one. It looks quite nice to my eye, Kay.
ReplyDeleteIf you cut the back off carefully, you'll be able to reassemble it later and offer it to ANOTHER person on Craigslist!
ReplyDeleteSo true. I was just thinking we should keep the cut off piece someplace, just in case.
DeleteThat's looks like a perfect desk to me and at the right price...enjoy!
ReplyDeletegreat buy!!!! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteLooks very nice. It's fun to find those kind of bargains.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is puzzling why a "well to do" person would bother to sell a desk for $25. Probably figured it was easier to give it away at a token price rather than haul the desk to GW or SA. Good find, and one good deed deserves another.

I'll bet Bob is going to look for a desk that is better quality. He'll probably have to get it shipped because it's hard to find great office furniture in the islands.
DeleteI should explain myself lol...I meant your recent donation to SA (good deed) came back to you this way. My MIL would always say to us..."say arigato gozaimasu", do always with a good heart then good things come to you.

Awww... That's such a nice thought. My mother tells us the same thing.
Delete$25?! The shelf for the keyboard does look wide enough to use your mouse on it, too. I have my mouse on top of the desk and I don't think it's the best ergonomics that high.
ReplyDeleteBut Ron, it is particle board. However, the color, the width (almost 5 feet), the tower space (although not deep enough...yet), the condition really works for us. Art can still hardly believe it. And yes, there is ample space for the mouse to move around on that shelf.
DeleteWhat a pretty desk. I like the color of the wood. However, I have always bought a computer hutch for my computers. It is more compact and takes up less space.
ReplyDeleteSince we put this desk in our master bedroom, I wanted something more inobtrusive. I love it that the color of the desk matches our bedroom furniture.
DeleteI think I am going to have to check out Craig's list.
ReplyDeleteThis is deja vu all over again for me. I too bought a nice piece of furniture from a wealthy couple high up on Kaimuki. I also bought a Siamese cat from a breeder.
In 1969, I brought the cat and table back to Virginia with me and my EX and I traded it back and forth for years (my sister took the cat as Connie developed asthma). I don't know what happened to it. I paid $100 for the table which was a lot of change in those days. Dianne
But it must have been an amazing, top quality table...
DeleteI lucked out getting the perfect setup for my office: I'll clean it up and post a picture sometime. I forget what I paid for it, because this was some time ago. That is a nice desk, though, and the adventure part of it was fun to read about!
ReplyDeleteI'll look forward to seeing your office. I'm always interested in seeing how other people organize their working space.
DeleteKay, what a great find-looks wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteI had alway heard that Diamond Head is an extinct volcano. But I wondered about that, since it didn't look like a volcano cone to me, at least from the usual down-low Waikiki beach vantage point. It looked more like a distinctively-shaped mountain. But once I was high up in that Kaimuki area, and it was pretty obvious from that vantage point, above and to the rear, that it is indeed a volcanic-looking cone. Your picture shows this.
ReplyDeleteHi Kay! What a beautiful desk for such a deal. It looks very nice.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful desk. I've never bought or sold anything from Craig's List, although many of my friends have. Glad you had such a nice experience.
ReplyDeleteAren't the heights just awesome? nice narrative & pics, Kay-
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week!

Oh yes! Definitely awesome!
DeleteKay - If you have an Office Depot there, they have pretty decent furniture for decent prices. I have 3 2-drawer files in a wide closet without the door. I put a floor "behind the couch" shelf unit on top of those. I have a huge desk with another shelf unit on top of it to make my "hutch." My cheaper computer desk also has a slide-out drawer for the keyboard and mouse. DrumMajor
