However, there are tricks I've learned along the way that helps me take better photos. Maybe I made a conscious effort because as a teacher I had to have my photo taken every year for the class/school photo booklets. Many teachers would compare photos and complain about how they looked. And it's true that many an attractive teacher didn't look so hot in their photo.
Perhaps everybody is different but I found that for myself:
- a three quarter face is usually better if I can manage it.
- As I got older I found that raising my eyebrows just a teeny tiny bit would give me an automatic face lift.
- An upright but natural posture helps a ton and keeps that front part (I don't mean my chest, I mean the tummy) of me from sticking out.
- And smile! But not too much so that your eyes squint up. Try to look natural if possible. Practice in front of a mirror. It might seem silly or vain, but then you won't have to complain so much later.
My son, Jon has said that Grandma always seems to be able to give you a sweet smile if you ask her.
I have a certain unnamed relative who refuses to smile and always looks grumpy in her photos. It's the first thing people notice and they think she's a grumpy person even though we all know she's the happiest, nicest, sweetest person around. And yet... on those rare photos that she does smile, you can see how beautiful she is.
- Our friend, Dave is a wedding photographer and he's told me to stay away from sleeveless outfits for photos. It's true. You can see from this photo why. It makes your arm look fat.
- If you have a weight problem, keeping an arm or something across the middle will keep it from being obvious.
- I always tell Art to stand back and not zoom in so much.
- When you're standing, try to keep one foot in front of the other, especially if you're bare legged. I don't know about guys.
- If you know you're going to have your photo taken, make-up helps some people. Lucky you who don't need it. My daughter is one who manages to look lovely without make-up. But then I'm biased.

You appear to sparkle and shine:)
ReplyDeleteOh, yea, when I ready for my profile on Mt. Rushmore I'l be sure to remember your pointers.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too fond of having my picture taken these days, but maybe these tips will help....if I can remember them. ;) The pic of you and your mom is really great.
ReplyDeleteyou are so pretty you would look lovely upside down or side ways, you have your mum's beautiful smile! My husband is bad for not smiling and we all tell him, we have given up, he smiles on the inside!! Thanks for the tips!!!
ReplyDeleteSome people are just naturally photogenic, and others never take a good picture. I suspect if you hate to have your picture taken, it shows. I actually like to have my picture taken, but I look better in pictures than in real life! :-)
ReplyDeletegood suggestions-I usually face the camera while my friend caryn looks like a model with a slant of posture....lol!
ReplyDeleteYou ARE photogenic! My features do not allow for that and BTW -- no way your arms look fat!!
ReplyDeletegreat tips only you could come up with Kay! I think I'll just take my chances, lol.
ReplyDeleteI was photogenic for most of my life, and then I got old. Now I hate to be caught in a photo, but your friend the wedding photographer has some good tips, and you have some good ones of your own. And a photo of you and your mom together is always a treasure...double the pleasure!
ReplyDeleteK
Awwww... Thank you, Kay. You are most certainly still photogenic. You do have the most beautiful smile!
DeleteDear Kay, you look lovely in photos, and I thought younger-looking in person! You and Art staying fit and trim is wonderful. Now, if I could just borrow your genetics and motivation. I used to be trim....would like to get back to that. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteYou are just too too kind, DrumMajor. Thank you for all your hints. I'm keeping them in my back pocket, if I'm ever cornered. So far so good though.
DeleteGreat tips Kay. And the photo of you and your mother is lovely. You are so alike. I still think that you have beautiful smiles regardelss of what you wore or how you stood. I think relaxing in front of the camera is important. I always tense up because I hate photos.
ReplyDeleteBut Lilly, you are totally movie star gorgeous! I don't think you could ever take a bad photo. George Clooney is waiting out there for you.
Deletehahahahahaha..I like this post..the tips are wonderful and the last one of photo shop is the ultimate..you are a genius Kay you can do anything and that too with ease and with that million dollar smile of yours..but actually you are very beautiful and I am sure you need no effort to look beautiful in photographs..
ReplyDeleteYou are very kind... but no, it takes a whole lot of effort and a lot of photo takes to find one that passes as OK.
DeleteIt's true, you do seem to take a good photograph Kay. I hate having my photograph taken and it shows. I've tried and tried to be more comfortable but it never works, so perhaps I should try some of your tips.
ReplyDeleteI do not like having my picture taken. Nothing will change that. I know having this attitude only makes my pictures look worse. No good tips will help either. Maybe my next life lol

It will only look worse if you're scowling. I'd love to see a photo of you though.
DeleteI think it's my teeth....I had too many and since having braces in high school too few. I always decline having my picture taken so I don't have much to share. I restored our laptops to factory default condition so now I don't know if I still have my pictures that DIL sent via email. I saved it on disc but I haven't looked at them yet.
DeleteOK I tried sending it, have never sent a picture via email before. Not sure if it went because an error message popped up.

Thank you EVERYBODY for your kind words. However, digital photography is fabulous because you can take a million photos until you get one you like. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't look that good in real life and most of my photos are awful. I prefer not to be in photos, but once in a while I hand my camera to Tom just so it can be recorded that I was there too. I can't pose so I just try to ignore the camera.
ReplyDeleteMahalo for the tips, Kay. They all ring true. I can't smile with teeth showing, anymore, due to my Bell's Palsy which has paralyzed my facial muscles. It's really an awful condition to have, and I have had it twice.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips. You look beautiful, Kay.
ReplyDeleteAnd anyway, beauty is as beauty does.
You would look great without doing anything. I do think some people are very photogenic while others are not. I hate to have my picture taken. I am very self conscious the minute the camera comes out.
ReplyDeleteKay...You glow from the inside and that is what makes you truly beautiful..thank you for your kind comments regarding my Mother's illness. This is turning out to be much more difficult than I had thought...with her care and how I feel about her.....hugs to you...
