What a strange evening...
Tonight my daughter, Tiffany and her family attended a funeral for our good friend, Karen. When Art asked our 5 year old granddaughter, KC about it, she replied that she was going to a funeral for Uncle R. We asked KC why and she said, "because Auntie Karen died." Yes, we realize KC didn't quite get the concept that the funeral was for Karen, but then again... maybe she was right. The funeral is also to bring comfort to the survivors.
We, on the other hand attended a wedding reception for the San Francisco daughter of a good friend. It was at the Ala Moana Mall's Jade Dynasty Seafood Restaurant.
I think this restaurant opened perhaps a year or so ago. Tonight they closed the restaurant for only private parties.
Here we are in our island attire... Art anyway.
The incredible feast ranged from an amazing salad, to winter melon soup, lobster, Peking duck, ginger chicken, roasted duck, shrimp and broccoli,
steamed Uhu fish, some kind of out of this world rice, mango pudding, and a cocoa puff cake.
When we were leaving, we could see that the shopping center and the restaurants were full of Saturday night revelers.
Tonight, two of life's rituals were acknowledged. One was to mark the passing of a woman everyone loved and the other was to celebrate the love between two people. I guess, in the end... it was all about love.

So profound, KC's way of seeing!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a talk with her; I would learn a lot.
Talk about mixed emotions though, a wedding and a funeral.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe KC is five already! The food looks fantastic!
I can't believe she's 5 already too! The food was amazing!!!
DeleteSuch fabulous food! Nice picture of you and Art, Kay. I do think the funerals are for the survivors, as Karen wasn't there. KC is very much in tune with the reality of life, even if it's not one we adults know. So sad about Karen.
ReplyDeletesuch a beautiful post and your grand daughter in her innocence hit the nail on the head,
ReplyDeleteTiffany told me that she told KC that it would be OK to give Uncle R a hug at the funeral. Well, KC felt he needed what Tif calls a projectile hug. She just launched herself on Karen's husband for a hug that nearly knocked him off his feet. Steadfast, stoic Brit though he maybe, that gave him a chuckle and a smile.
DeleteAnd what a lovely post this is. Yes, funerals are for the living. The dead are beyond all earthly cares. Dianne
ReplyDeleteI think KC got it right about the funeral. We have just gotten bad news about a friends health and your words about love at the different stages of life really struck a not with me.
ReplyDeleteSounds like KC came away from a funeral with the right thoughts, to keep the surviving "uncle" in mind. Of course, there's the love between Kay and Art showing in the lovely photo. What a wonderful spread at the wedding reception! Yes, the circle of life continues. The grass keeps growing, and babies are still being born, no matter how much strife may surround us. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteWhat a bitter-sweet weekend, Kay. One couple said good-bye; the other said hello. An end and a beginning. The food looked sumptuous. Glad you and Art had a good time.
ReplyDeleteYou said this beautifully. It was truly a weekend of good-byes and hellos.
DeleteKC is wise indeed, Kay! And a what a bittersweet weekend. I'm glad it ended on a happy note! Have a beautiful day!!
ReplyDeletesorrow and happiness are the two sides of a coin..but life has to move on..very happy for your friend's daughter's marriage but in the same time so sorry for Karen..
ReplyDeleteyou and Art look great and the food too tempting..
comings and goings-all part of life's celebrations!
ReplyDeleteYou make me feel like we lead a quiet life here in little old Hilo! Have a nice holiday!
ReplyDeleteOh I don't think so! I read your blog and I see what you're always up to. I think my life is quieter.
DeleteI rarely venture up the higher floor at Ala Moana shopping center. Just not my cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteIt's the first time I've ever been to this restaurant. We rarely venture to that level too. I'm thinking we should try that Tsukiji Market restaurant someday though... for a really, really special occasion.
Deletebeen there. For receptions, etc, the upper floor is great, but those new retail stores was what I was referring too. A lady in Waikiki who operates a liquor store said she owns the restaurant. Even gave me her business card. She's Vietnamese, or something.
DeleteOut of the mouths of babes:)
ReplyDeleteWhat is cocoa puff cake?
Cocoa puffs are chocolate cream filled puffs. The puffs were all lined up to form a large rectangular cake. Then chantilly was slathered over the top. This way, you didn't have to cut the cake. Everybody just got a delicious cream puff. I always remove the chantilly because I KNOW it's not good for me. Anything that tastes that good just can't be good for you.
DeleteKC was absolutely correct. It is for the living. And you are right too. It was all about love.
