We received some beautiful roses from my cousin and enjoyed them for several days. However, a few soon began to droop. I saw a post that Denise of An English Girl Rambles wrote about just shortening the stems and putting them in a smaller vase.
I tried it and it worked out beautifully! I love the effect and now we can enjoy the flowers a little longer.

Super Garage Sale Update:
We were going to the Richardson Super Garage Sale on Saturday but it was cancelled due to weather. That was a surprise. (I didn't see any snow.)
Sigh... We've had an awful lot of rain in the islands for the past several days.

DeleteYes, shortening the stems adds to their longevity. I also change the water. My tulips are now gone, after one glorious week. Perhaps I will see them again soon in my garden. Dianne
ReplyDeleteThe stem trick always works. They never last long with their original length. I had to do floral work (as part of a produce department) before so I know some tricks.

ReplyDeleteActually there was a snow advisory on Mauna Kea on the Big Island. I was really tempted to pack our winter jackets and head out to the Big Island.
DeleteRecutting flowers and putting in clean water...sometime a tiny bit of bleach and sugar helps. My Valentines bouquet has lasted over a week...it was a mixed bouquet and the roses were the first to go.

DeleteHowever, yes... we've been having quite a few downpours lately. Last night, I thought we might need an ark. There have been flash flood warnings on Maui. A tourist on Kauai was also washed out to sea this week when she tried to cross a stream. It was tragic.
Thanks for the tips! Good tip to add bleach with the sugar since bacteria in the water hastens decay.

I checked up on the bleach and it's supposed to kill the bacteria. You'd think it would kill the flowers. Amazing!

ReplyDeleteI just looked it up and it says 1/4 teaspoon of bleach helps along with an Aspirin to keep the stems open. They also mention Sprite and 7-Up being a good plant food as well as cutting the stems at a slant.

Alright Kay, I just read something the other day that said to put some Viagra in flowers to help, yep, "perk them up!" Don't know if that's for real or not.
ReplyDeleteThe Director at a Maui art shop where I got a wonderful painting, said they had good snow on Mauna Kea right now. I think it'd be easier just to buy some shave ice.
