Did you watch the Oscars? We managed to watch it from the Red Carpet all the way until the ending song to the Losers.
I rather enjoyed it actually. I'd never heard of Seth McFarlane. Now I know he sings well, is not bad to look at and has a raunchy sense of humor. Granted some of his jokes were somewhat over the top or below the belt, but it kept me entertained.
I took this photo with my iPad of the TV screen. Turned out quite well, I thought. I have some opinions about the acceptance speeches.
I wish they'd stop using time to thank their lawyers or accountants or whatever.
I really like it when they recognize and give their respect to the other nominees who didn't win in their category. Anne Hathaway did that beautifully. I was happy to see more stars taking the time to do it this year.
One annoying thing I saw this year and have seen before is when the designated speaker of a group acknowledges people who were part of the project, but then spoil it by sending greetings or thanks only to his or her family or friends. He should have said something like, "We would all like to thank our family and friends for their......."
I was surprised to see Michelle Obama announce the Best Picture award. She looked great and was so beautifully poised. Wow!

I could have watched it live on my computer but decided it was not worth being awake at 3 a.m. for it. Thanks for the update of what I missed.
ReplyDeleteThe news did show us little clips the day after--of Mrs. Obama and of the two Israeli directors whose documentaries failed to win an Oscar.
Yes, I watched the entire thing. I loved many of the dresses and was especially taken by Charlize Theron's, but I think my favorite was Sally Field, in red chiffon. Actually there were many beautiful dresses. I enjoyed the show, although it was awfully long, with few surprises other than Ang Lee winning Best Director for Life of Pi.
ReplyDeleteDid you happen to notice Jennifer Annisten (Don't know how to spell or even say her last name). I had just seen her in a TV movie, made in 2012 and her face looked different. She either had a new facelife/nose job or gained weight or got older. I barely recognized her. She still was attractive but just different. I also noticed her on the Oscars and she still looked like something was different. Did you notice anything?

ReplyDeleteI wasn't a big Seth Macfarland fan - although I have men in the house who are. I have to say I thought he did a great job and was one of the better hosts I've seen. I thought the theme of music in the movies was wonderful and my favorite of the night was Jennifer Hudson. It's such a self-congratulatory event, but still fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteI just can't stay up that long so I recorded it. By breezing past the commercials and uninteresting category speeches I saw the whole show in about an hour and half the next day.

Charlize Theron was beautiful and I really enjoyed her dance with Magic Mike.
We don't have a theater in my area--the closest is a 3 hour round trip--so I am looking forward to a fun season with Netflix. Life of Pi peaked my interest the most.
I saw most of the Oscar show. I enjoyed it and think Seth MCFarlane did a good job, but he was bound to get some critisism. I just heard that the ratings for the show were pretty good. I think I liked watching more than usual because I had seen more of the nominated movies this year than usual. I would have liked to have seen Sally Field win.

ReplyDeleteJust before Oscar time, I spoke with my son Richard who lives in CA. We were both pulling for Lincoln and DDL. I love DDL to bits. As he was on CA time, Richard was looking forward to the Oscars. I told him I was NOT going to stay up until 1:00 AM to watch them. Never again.
ReplyDeleteThe first half of the program is technical awards, which are necessary, but could be done in a different venue. Most folks don't care who wins the Oscar for "best lighting" in a film, the exception being my friend Tootie, whose son works in Hollywood and is a lighting designer.
I used to watch the Oscars every year and was a real film devotee since I was a teen when I used my allowance to buy Photoplay and read Hedda Hopper's tell all book. I am totally disqusted with most films at present. The exception is Lincoln, which my son says I MUST see, and Amour which I've read about.
The gowns will appear in People Mag, and yes, Charlize Theron always looks stunning. At six feet tall, she proves big girls can be glamourous. Dianne
Watched the Oscars with a buddy. We thought Seth was a jerk and didn't need to spout so many bad things, especially for the young girl nominee and implying Clooney could date her soon. Seth dropped the "classiness" level WAY down. The old '40s big stage dancing reviews brought some relief. I was stunned Michelle Obama was part of it and couldn't figure it out. Read elsewhere that she's involved with promoting arts and the industry. Disappointed Argo and Zero Dark Thirty were featured so much because I thought the country was tired of these conflicts.
ReplyDeleteLife of Pi is an excellent, unique film, as was "The Sessions." Wished "The Hobbit" got more nominations, but I think moviegoers are getting used to it's grand productions.

I never watch it because I seldom see a movie. However, this year I did see Lincoln and was disappointed it did not win more of the awards. I've read there's been much criticism of Michelle presenting an award. While Laura Bush appeared in the opening of the 2002 awards she did not present an award. In 1981 President Reagan taped an appearance for the Oscars, and in 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt spoke to the Oscar audience by radio. Apparently Michelle's "sin" was 'presenting an award.' I could give her critics a list of things more appropriate to think about. They have too much time on their hands. Relax, enjoy life for a change I say.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with you. I enjoyed seeing Michelle with her bangs though I think they're too close to her eyes. What is so wrong with presenting an award, for goodness sake?
DeleteOn the whole I enjoyed the show but did not think too much of Seth McFalane's tasteless jokes. Maybe they were aimed for a younger audience, young males that is. I loved the fashion show and thought that Charlene's dress was really pretty.
ReplyDeleteYes, I liked the Theron dress best, and the one with the purple ruffles down the back next. I loved the front of the Hathaway dress, but the lady who tripped looked like she was walking in a stuffed pillow.

Yes, I watched the whole thing, too. I don't mind edgy jokes but I didn't think Seth was very funny. I wanted "Lincoln" to win. I agree with your comments about acceptance speeches, and Charlize is incredibly beautiful. I love her short hair.
