I can't believe I did it again! What is it about my feet? I missed my Monday Zumba class because I went to the Lantern Floating. I was counting on joining my Zumba group for our Wednesday class followed by our weekly girl talk type lunch. However, it was not to be.
I was walking out of the supermarket on Tuesday afternoon going from grass to sidewalk. Suddenly my foot just turned and I fell. Why?
Art couldn't believe it. He was right behind me and saw it happen. He said he just happened to be looking down and saw my foot twist which made me fall. My foot seemed OK, but we iced it just to be sure when we got home.
I refused to miss my Zumba outing at first because there wasn't awful pain, but by evening, my ankle was tender to walk on.
So why did this happen to me?
I looked at the Crocs slippers I was wearing. It has worried me a little before that the heel is angled inward so the stepping surface is smaller. It gives it a better look, but it isn't as stable. Still, I've been fine with it until now.
I guess I'll go back to wearing my more stable FitFlops or my gym shoes.
They tell you that falling is one of the hazards when you get older.
Sigh...
I guess I'm older now. Then again I've always been a bit of a klutz. Now I'm an older klutz.
Sigh...
POSTSCRIPT: On Tuesday night, the pain was awful after all. I couldn't sleep. I had to hop around looking for something to ease the pain. (Art was sound asleep.) I found some Tylenol PM in my travel supply which really did the trick. I was able to sleep.
I researched what to do about sprains. It said to ice first to keep the swelling down and then to rest and elevate the foot for a couple of days. Last night I couldn't put any weight on it.
Wednesday morning the foot was much better, but it hurt a bit to walk on it. That's when I remembered that I still had the foot brace from when I broke my foot the last time. It's even the same foot.
So I'm taking it easy today.
Hmmm... what about my Thursday tai chi? Would it look funny to do tai chi with the foot brace? We shall see.

Ouch! Looks like a ZUMBA vacation for a while. But I know it will take more than a sprained ankle to keep you down for long.
ReplyDeleteWell, I just love the foot brace. Trés chic, especially with the pink on the other foot.
ReplyDeleteI've always been a klutz, and the older I get, the more I become a danger to myself.
Wishing you and your foot well ASAP.
Hi to Art, and all the best to your mom.
Luv, K
Oh Kay, I know what you mean. I seem to be always turning my ankles. Momma had that happen to her several times. I am so cautious walking on unfamiliar ground. Take care.
ReplyDeleteMy sister had to give up running because she would turn her ankle with no warning and go right down. She walks now, but I suspect you should stay away from shoes without good support. I thought about getting some hiking boots that don't cover the ankles, but I decided it wasn't a good idea. More support is better for those of us prone to sprains.
ReplyDeleteTarnation! I sympathize. Take care of it and be careful. For a month I've dealt with a half sprained ankle. Nothing resolves it. I suppose a trip to the doctor is in order.
ReplyDeleteUh oh.... This sounds a lot like what Mage said, Joanne. I'm afraid a trip to the doctor is in order here.
DeleteKay how awful! Please take care and wear proper walking shoes, for your feet have to support your whole body.
ReplyDeleteIt is scary to be so vulnerable when you go for a walk. Take care.
Wil, ABCW team.
Oh no, I hope you'll feel much better soon! Take good care of yourself!
ReplyDeleteOH, NO! Sprained ankles are no fun.
ReplyDeleteJust last night I wrote about my sore wrist and a visit to the chiropractor. He suggested a treatment that was almost the exact opposite of what you're (and I was) doing. He gave me an adjustment and showed me some pressure points to use to bring more blood to the sore area. Today I can't BELIEVE how much better it feels!
If it's still hurting, it might be worthwhile to have a doctor check it to make sure you haven't fractured it. Comfortable shoes are more important than good looking at our age...although you are still a young thing.
ReplyDeleteoh Kay, I am so sorry to read this, could that ankle now be a bit weak, maybe its still a bit weak from the previous injury, thats a shame, take care.
ReplyDeleteoh no...so sorry you hurt yourself again! hope it is better soon!
ReplyDeleteI hope it heals quickly without further treatment. You better hang on to that boot! I'm sitting here writing this while icing my knee after attempting to step over a small fence, catching my foot, and falling and twisting it, so you can see I am a fellow klutz!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I hope your foot will stop hurting soon ! Take good care of yourself !
ReplyDeleteI'm doing quite well now (Friday). Thanks so much, Karin.
DeleteI kept waiting for the part where you went to the doctor and had an x-ray. I hope you heal and nothing too serious is going on in there.
ReplyDeleteOuch! I feel your pain. I have one weak ankle that acts up from time to time, so I feel your pain. All the skiing, bicycle, and hiking mishaps of my youth may have something to do with it. Thinking about some acupuncture...
ReplyDeleteHope you find relief soon!
Blessings....
ReplyDeletesorry about the foot, at least no where else was hurt. You can do Tai Chi, if you are not hurting, its ok to look a little silly sometimes
Just an observation....
I noticed am no longer on your blogroll?
Hi Rhapsody, not at all. You're still on the blogroll. I just looked. The blogroll moves according to when you last posted.
DeleteOh Kay, I am so very sorry to hear this. Bless your heart... Hope that foot gets better soon... I had to quit wearing flip flops and sandals --and mostly wear tennis shoes these days... I don't have a problem with falling --but I do have 'weak' feet.... Take care of YOU.
ReplyDeleteHugs and Prayers,
Betsy
Oi poor Kay. So sorry you are in pain again.
ReplyDeleteCan you take a chair to Tai Ji? Really, that is how my class started in the first weeks, doing some of the movements while sitting.
I see what you mean about those Croc heels; I'd be falling all over myself. I keep saying I'm going to buy girly shoes, but I keep wearing just my hiking boots all winter and now my strong Israeli sandals all summer. Comfort, comfort ye my people.
hehe Please try to stay horizontal for as long as it takes and let your housemates pamper you.
I actually did a short tai chi session with the boot on which tired me a little because it isn't light and then Art insisted I not push it and we went home. It was nice to see everybody though and of course they all joked about how I got it.
DeleteI know you won't let this get you down. You'll get up and do Zumba again. Have a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say this, but you may have cracked a bone. You should have it checked out by the doc. I did just what you did, the doc called it a sprain, and in the end the exray showed a break. Do check just to be on the safe side. No going to Zumba and Tai Chi isn't ok. LOL Call the doc and elevate it while you ice it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mage. On Tuesday night, I seriously considered going to Tripler emergency. However, by morning it had miraculously improved somewhat and after bracing it and trying to keep weight off of it, got even better. Today, Friday... it's almost... almost normal but Art is making me stay home and not go to Zumba because it isn't exactly 100% yet.
DeleteP.S. Cute crocs! : )
ReplyDeleteDo rest more and get well soon!
ReplyDeleteIt will be better in a short time. I believe,
ReplyDeleteCrocs and flip flops are cuter but sneakers will keep you upright. They are all I wear these days. That boot looks really stable. Hope you are Zumbaing soon.
ReplyDeleteDo not worry about how you look. Ask you doctor if you can do the Tai Chi with the sprained ankle. In most cases you should elevate and stay off of a sprain. Osteoporosis is also an issue. Be sure you take your calcium and you medicines. I am so sorry, because this means you have to be patient.
ReplyDeletethat's unfortunate
ReplyDeleteYour blog buddies have the same thought: get it checked by the doc just in case you've cracked something. Take your boot and your Crocs to the appointment and see what they say. (I'd heard Crocs were supposed tot be bad for some reason.) Hope it gets better. If you can take motrin / ibuprofen, it's good for sprains more than Tylenol PM which is just Tylenol with 25 mg of Bendadryl added to it.
ReplyDeleteDrumMajor
I really was going to take Motrin, BUT #1: It was downstairs and I didn't want to wake up Art who was peacefully snoring. He didn't even wake up with me hopping all over the room looking for any painkiller. He said he once slept through a fire in a neighboring hotel. #2: I know you have to take Motrin with food which was also downstairs and it was past midnight and I'd be lying down to try to sleep. I figured the Tylenol was the best bet.
DeleteOuch!!! So sorry to see you in this state..hope by now you are a bit ok..please get checked by a doc immediately..take care and give some rest to your foot..
ReplyDeleteOuch! Speaking from one who has had sprained ankles more than I have fingers and toes over the years, I can truly sympathize. Hope your ankle feels better soon. That foot brace interests me. Did you buy that in the drug store?
ReplyDeleteI got the foot brace from Tripler's emergency room when I broke my foot a while ago. It really helped me to ease the pain on Wednesday and even Thursday. Today, Friday... I'm walking around without it, but carefully... gingerly.
DeleteWhat a pain! I fear that the more times you injure an ankle the easier it is to injure it again. On the upside though, the injuries seem to heal up more quickly the more often it happens. I have the same problem; I broke it twice and now it's so easy to sprain it. Most of the time it feels fine in a day or so, though sometimes it takes a little longer. I too have a brace that I use and it really helps. Hope you're on the mend soon.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm... This really sounds like me too!
DeleteSo sorry! Another thing about Crocs is that the soles wear out when the shoes still look OK, and they can be very slippery.
ReplyDeleteYou can skip tai chi. You don't have to do everything Kay:)
ReplyDeleteOh! So sorry to hear it, my fellow klutz
ReplyDeleteGet well, Kay. (That looks like the standard Tripler-issued ankle boot. I wore one of those for a month in November of last year.)
ReplyDeleteYup! Tripler is where I got it when I broke my 5th metatarsal. My foot/ankle feels much better now, thank goodness. I was really worried that first miserable night.
