I love my Kindle 3. I really do. Art wasn't all that enthused about my getting it at first in January 2011, but he soon saw the benefits and ended up getting a Kindle Fire for himself. He likes the Fire just fine, but it is a teeny bit heavier than my Kindle 3.
When we go places and bring them both, neither are very light, mostly because of the covers. I needed a cover with a light so it was heavier. I bought the 3G capability which brought my Kindle price to $189.00. The cover cost $59.00! So together, it wasn't cheap. Still, I never regretted it and loved having all those books at my fingertips.
Then I heard about the Kindle Paper White. No way! I didn't need another e-reader! But then Linda from Linda Letters bought one which made me curious. The next time I was at the store, I looked for the Paper White. It looked so much smaller. I thought the reading area was smaller, but it's not. It's the same.
The Fire is on the left. My Kindle 3 or 4 is in the middle and the Paper White is on the right.
The Paper White is only about an ounce lighter, I believe. But it feels a lot lighter. I think it's because the cover is so much lighter.
They were having a sale and I just couldn't resist getting it. There were only pink covers, but I can live with it. (Art is not thrilled.) I would have preferred purple. Ah well.
The Paper White battery is supposed to go a maximum of 2 months on a single charge so that's twice what my Kindle 3 does. The Paper White is also a touch screen so I'm getting used to it. There's a lot to love about the Paper White and I'm definitely going to bring it on trips. Art says he's leaving the Fire at home.
And Art says he doesn't think he'll be reading any of his books on my Paper White with that hot pink cover calling too much attention either. Ah well, he can always put a macho magazine in front of it.
And my old Kindle? My granddaughter will be visiting soon and I'm adding some Magic Treehouse books so that she can read them while she's in Hawaii. I love it!

My brother has an iPad Mini, a Kindle Fire, and a Paper White. He says there is no comparison to reading on the Paper White, which is easy to see everywhere. He uses his iPad for most things, but really tried to convince me to get the Paper White if I would be using it mostly for reading books. I bought a Kindle Fire but really prefer my larger iPad for reading most things on it. The resolution of the Fire's screen is awesome, however. :-)

ReplyDeleteBoth hubby and I have Paperwhites and we love them! They do hold a charge forever and are a perfect size.
ReplyDeleteAre you giving your old kindle to your granddaughter permanently? Or just letting her use it when she is in Hawaii? Good to put it to use rather than just lying around.

ReplyDeleteGee...I feel guilty that my Kindle reader (identical to the one shown in the middle) sits unused. I find books easier to read on my husband's Kindle Fire because of the very reason that it is against an illuminated light background. I think maybe a lot of people feel that way too. Imagine Jeff Besos prefered the original newspaper print background and hesitated to take it in the Fire direction at first (saw an interview where he said that)...now I'm curious too about the paper white.

ReplyDeleteThis is a leap I have not taken. I tried a magazine subscription on my tablet, but I did not enjoy it at all. It is the background light that bothers me for reading. My library now has Kindles for loan so I may get my toes in the water that way.

ReplyDeleteI have a regular Kindle from years ago, probably one of the first and gave it to my daughter when I finally bought a KindleFire. I LOVE my KindleFire but recently bought an IPAD too. But, I still like to read on the KindleFire even though it is a bit heave. I read so much faster. I still have the books on CD or audiobook for the car and the occasional hardcover or paperback. Let's just face it...I LOVE TO READ in any form.
ReplyDeleteI love my Nook GlowLight. I can read it in the sun or turn on the GlowLight if it is dark inside. In St. Louis you can check out books for either Kindle or Nook through Overdrive, which is part of the library system. Free books checked out from my easy chair at home and I don't pay fines for overdue books. I think that Overdrive is available through libraries around the country.

Yup. I still love my Kindle Paperwhite. I can read in a dark room and in bright sunlight.
ReplyDeleteI do have a Kindle Paperwhite, though I don't read on it a whole lot. It's convenient for vacations and such, and you can kind of make the pages look like actual "book" pages (which you can't with the Fire and the upgrades). But I am kinda old-fashioned and will always prefer the turning of the pages :)

Like you I have two-- both are keyboard though. I have to remember to keep the first one charged. Also like you, I keep the first one as a back up. Not sure I could do with out my Kindle. It ranks right up there with the computer as a super invention.
ReplyDeleteI have a nook, and because it is too heavy for my hands I rarely use it. I do prop it on a pillow, but that's not close enough so I can see. I've gone back to real books on pillows.
