My Cuisinart blender that I loved died. I've had it for six years and it worked great although I made it work very hard to make my smoothies. I did often use a lot of frozen fruits which caused it to struggle.
Since everybody still likes having smoothies, we decided to splurge and buy a rather pricey one. We knew the Vitamix blender would cost about $400 + at Costco. Sigh... I know. I know. My excuse is that our kids and precious granddaughter are coming this month and I knew I'd be making a lot of smoothies.
We were walking around the Navy Exchange (store) and a lady was doing a demonstration on how to make a smoothie. Right off, she showed me what I'd been doing wrong all these years which is probably why I killed my other blender.
She said I should ALWAYS put in liquid first. One third of the smoothie should be liquid as in juice, grapes, oranges, milk, yogurt or whatever. Then I could add in my apples, bananas or whatever I wanted to put in and then add the frozen things last.
I'd been doing it wrong all these years! The Vitamix has a 7 year guarantee. It should last longer since my Cuisinart died after 6 years of my mistreatment.
So now you know! Put the liquid in first! Is there something else I should know?

My sister loves her Vitamix. I don't even have a blender, but I think if I do get one it will be a Vitamix. Please let me know what you think of it, in comparison to your Cuisinart. :-)
ReplyDeleteThere's a couple of things about it that I especially like. It has a hole at the top with a plunger that doesn't reach the blades. Therefore if doesn't rotate well, you can pump it safely. That's a great feature. Also, if it should struggle too much, the motor will turn off on its own before you damage it. This is good for me.
DeleteOur ancient blender still works fine, but we don't use it that much. $400.00. Wow. That is expensive!
ReplyDeleteYou now have new instructions, and a top of the line blender. It makes good soups too.
ReplyDelete400 dollars, wowsa, thats pricey, it better make fantastic smoothies for that price! I have never made or drank a smoothie, I must check this out,
ReplyDeleteI don't have a fancy blender but so far it works fine for smoothies.....I just throw everything in all at once. :)
ReplyDeletegood suggestion, I'll try to remember.
ReplyDeleteI am so cheap...errr frugal...I don't think I could spend $400 on a "small" appliance lol I use my (Macy's) under $20 blender to crush ice. I love my shaved ice (topped with juice and yogurt). I don't make smoothies with the blender because I'm too lazy to take apart the parts to wash.

How odd...I just made a frozen strawberry smoothie (from berries we had picked last year) and added a peach, honey, peanut butter, and yogurt. BUT I did add the mile first! My gasket seems to be leaking, though. So that is my project this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteMay your blender rest in peace :) or pieces?? Ok Ok, too soon lol
ReplyDeleteI hope your new blender works fabulously for many years my friend :-)
I hope you enjoy many delicious smoothies with your new blender. I'm enjoying yogurt-rhubarb-ginger ones right now.
ReplyDeletei just bought the vitamix last year. it is fantastic. i use it almost every day! it is so good for making cream soups and pureeing sauces. plus it cleans itself. i am sure you will be happy with it!
ReplyDeletethanks for the tip! Wow, that's an expensive blender....it better last.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your new blender... I've seen that one advertised on TV.... You'll love it --and enjoy it for a LONG time.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
Thanks for the tips. I too have a new blender and want it to last!
ReplyDeleteIn my dreams I own a Vitamix! I did know about liquid first, frozen bits last though. I do love smoothies.
ReplyDeleteblender is a nice device in every kitchen
ReplyDeleteWhen I make milkshakes I put the ice cream in first then the milk
ReplyDeleteHad a Vitamix years ago and loved it. It is great for making soups and ice cream also. Did not know that about the liquid first. Thanks, you added life to my mixer.
ReplyDeleteYou got many years from the old one, although some folks have appliances from the late 1950s. Your blender was on hospice. I didn't know about the liquid first rule, but many recipies seem to have too much liquid. I'll have a papaya sorbet if your birdies don't eat all of the fruit!

thanks for the tip!

I just have an inexpensive blender that I use every morning to make my breakfast shake. Yes, I do start with the milk, because I measure it by the scale in the blender jar, then the tofu, the half banana, the frozen blueberries and finally the Slimfast powder.
ReplyDeleteThey do wear out, but I don' t have much invested in mine, and I don't make smoothies. I just eat fruit.
Yep... I knew that... I just gave away my Bosch Universe Kitchen Center machine to my niece, who's on a liquid diet. I rarely used the machine, but couldn't bring myself to buy a new bread machine because I had this whiz-bang dough making machine. Now I can go buy myself a stand alone bread machine like I used to have (I gave it away to a neighbor friend when another friend gifted me with the Bosch!). Something out before something in!
ReplyDeleteI've not owned a blender for decades. I love my Cuisinart and use it almost exclusively for mixing as well as chopping. The Breville juicer has gotten a workout around here as I use it almost every day. I've considered a Vitamix b/c it does so much, but yikes, it's expensive. I just saw one at Target today for $400 and thought of yours. My cuisinart may need to be replaced soon (it's 33 years old), so I'll save my money to buy that. A replacement will be about that same amount of money.
ReplyDeleteHope this blender last you a long time!
ReplyDeleteMy blender is 15 years old is still going strong..but its good to know that the frozen things should be put last..will always keep it in mind now onwards..
