Art and I have been totally consumed with putting together our photobooks of our trip to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Bangladesh. We were gone for 25 days! We had three cameras, four if you count my iPhone. We took nearly 9,000 photos!
We had to use my journal, his notes (in teeny handwriting on a couple of sheets of paper), and research places online because we were often unsure of what we took photos of.
We then went through the painful photo selection process with each of us partial to our own snapshots. Then came the formatting and editing. Costco has a maximum of 100 pages for their books so we had to break up our trip into two albums. That's right! We ended up with nearly 200 pages.
We finally finished and Art sent it off to Costco.
Within a short time the books were available for pick up. Even though they were both nearly 100 pages (50 sheets), the books were quite thin. It's a much better solution to our albums than our bigger binders that take up too much room on our shelves. You can see how filled our shelves are.
With each book that we do, we're gaining more understanding on how to make the books better.
I think I'm pleased with the last page of our albums best. I took the photo, Art found the quote. That's our son, Keola at the bottom left hand corner taking a photo while we were having a last evening walk on the Sundarbans in Bangladesh.

ReplyDeletePhoto books are the way to go. I have been doing these for my grandchildren now for 5 years. First I used Jostens which had been the company I used to produce the school's yearbooks. They closed down the photo book part of their business so I tried Apple since that's who prints any photos of which I want a copy but the quality was not good. This last book I just made for Leeya's fifth birthday was done with Shutterfly. I've not seen the finished product as I have the finished product mailed directly to the birthday child.

ReplyDeleteThe cost was a limiting factor for me. I built an album that had about 200 pages, and all that Snapfish would do was 90. I will try Costco next time. Your albums look really good.

With the photography and research skills honed with each succeeding trip, it could evolve into a nice business opportunity one day. Who knows, bridal, birthday, reunion photobooks. Already, your blog is very professional and packed with information and insight.

Your albums look wonderful and that last page is just perfect. It's interesting to see how the technology and albums have changed throughout our lifetimes. Every album, no matter how professional or not professional at all, is so precious.

ReplyDeleteI have never had a photo book made. Lately our trips have stayed in computer/cloud storage. With a big trip coming up this fall, I will have to keep this in mind.

OH, wonderful! My daughter has made photo books for each year of her family and given me my own copies....I should make some books for myself. Perhaps you will inspire me with th e courage to try this. It is a wonderful thing to do.

ReplyDeleteWe didn't think we could use those photo books because we use so many photos and write so much text. It took us several years before we figured out how to do it. Now we regret not having done it sooner. It took Hank Chapin, one of my blog commenters to really nudge, encourage me into doing it.
