We've had our luggage lost several times for several days now by various airlines so I must say I'm rather paranoid. They haven't been stolen (yet), just misdirected.
However, I was watching something on the news about luggage thieves and it's gotten me more paranoid.
I wrote something about this a long time ago and someone mentioned how they mark their luggage with acrylic paint so it would be very visible. I've never done this. I do put a large address tag with our photo on one side and our contact information concealed on the inside.
Now I'm paranoid enough to get out my acrylic paint and mark my new suitcase. There it is! Front and back.
They also mentioned on the news to avoid buying nondescript colored luggage like black because they all look alike.
I did offer to paint Art's luggage too, but he won't let me.
All I can say is if his luggage is lost, I'm not lending him my underwear.

This makes me wonder if I should paint my black suitcase neon for my upcoming trip to Germany :)
ReplyDeleteWell I don't understand how that can keep it from being lost or stolen. But I don't travel much and certainly never overseas. Glad you are doing it if it helps. I always believe you are right.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping it makes them conspicuous enough that thieves wouldn't try to walk away with it since the owner might easily notice. I hope.

ReplyDeleteI think it's a great way to make it obvious that it's yours. I have a red bag, which once was fairly unique, but no longer. I tie streamers on mine, too. But this makes these bags so unique nobody will DARE take them. :-)
ReplyDeleteI mark my luggage with bows and decals so I can ID it. We have had luggage lost only once, later recovered, in our many trips over the years. Is luggage getting lost more often these days?
ReplyDeleteWe've had our luggage misdirected in England, Netherlands, Las Vegas and Germany. So far they haven't been stolen... Knock on wood!

ReplyDeleteMaybe sort of like here in Israel, some say when you buy a new car, get an unusual color. Lavender and pink cars are almost never stolen.
Well, your luggage certainly won't be lost! Maybe thieves will think there is something inside that will indicate them in the crime, so they will be reluctant to get into it? Great idea.

ReplyDeleteI try and split our clothes between our luggage. In case one gets lost, there are clothes in the other luggage. I used to pack an extra set of clothes in my carry on but now I use the space for food/snacks/blankets.

To be perfectly honest we do put some clothes in each other's suitcase when we are going on a trip. We also put one change of clothes in our carry-on. And we still manage to have room for our snacks and noise canceling travel earphones.

ReplyDeleteI often think as I wait for our luggage to appear on the carousel how easy it would be for someone to just walk off with what doesn't belong to them. They is no checking now like there used to be a long time ago. That enormous K should help.
