Mom likes going to Marukai (Japanese grocery store) to pick up vitamins and other Japanese type products. It's a membership store, but I know we have found items cheaper at Don Quijote (grocery store).
There was some Spin-the-Wheel sort of promotion going on along with a sale on sake (rice wine) so Mom wanted to go.
Notice the TWO bottles of sake. That's TWO gallons of sake. It happens to be Mom's hidden flavor in most of her dishes.

ReplyDeleteWe usually have sake in our house. Son used to belong to a sake of the month type thing. I sometimes have to drink a little sake to calm my essential tremors. Handy stuff to have around.

ReplyDeleteToo bad that the Marukai lunches weren't that good. Anyway, with the way Aunty cooks, I'm sure you folks are used to much better quality food made at home, although I'm sure you and Aunty both relish NOT having to cook every now and then. Love all the little plastic food containers at Marukai. Just don't want to hassle with carrying all that stuff back on the flight back home. I did find the scallop dashi you described the last time I was up there; just haven't cooked with it yet!

Isn't the scallop dashi what Aunty uses for her kabocha? For the trip, of course you have to do the Waimea Canyon and Haena drives (North Shore of Kauai pretty bad now - very crowded). They also have ATV tours at Kipukai (right outside of Koloa), and Poipu has the Mahaulepu sand dunes. You need to let Holly and me know when you're coming, so we can pick a night that we can take your family out to dinner. If you folks want to stay at Mom and Dad's place, not a problem, but I think the stove no longer works (Holly would know best since she's the one down there all the time). But at least you'd save on the costs of a hotel - not fancy, but waterproof! :-)
