Patti's Poop Post

Patti of The New Sixty wrote a blog post about pooping a while back. I love Patti and all her posts. She writes with wit, candor and especially humor. You should really stop by for a smile, laugh or new information.

You might consider this TMI, but Patti suggested it and it really worked for me so I'm passing it on. I guess you could call this a Forwarded blog post.

In Patti's Poop Post she suggested that instead of straining you should just blow if you're a bit constipated. As she said, "It is a medical fact that straining can cause a brain aneurysm or an aortic dissection." She also suggested eating more veggies and yes, I knew that.

I do some qi gong exercises on the toilet if there's a problem. I always felt the stretching and twisting of my body would help things move. However, I have now seen that blowing does indeed move those lower muscles even more effectively. I went back to Patti and told her that blowing works on #1 and #2. No kidding. There are times you're in a hurry and blowing really does work. Is it only seniors that have this sort of problem?

Ummm.... When I was using the fancy bathroom at the Nixon Library in California I thought it was only my sister-in-law and me in the stalls. Therefore, I mentioned this blowing technique to her while we were both in our stalls. When I came out.... oops! There was a young woman who had just come out of her stall and she looked at me and gave me a giant grin.

I can just imagine her relating this new and wonderful fact to her friends. Do you think she was laughing?

  1. The best story from a stall in the bathroom was the woman in the next exclaiming "Corn! When did I eat corn?"

Yes Patti is great and like Patti, you guys will say anything if it might help someone else. I have to mention again for those who are not naturalists a miracle pill taken once a day...Linzess. I only wish my parents would have had it available to them. It is amazing.

  7. Yes, it works. I'm grinning too. A tiny bidet works wonderfully afterwards. I've been no handed lately, and the bidet gave me my dignity back. LOL

  9. I ate beets recently and if one does not remember that, it can be quite frightening when one looks in the toilet.

  11. There's a product called the Squatty Potty which helps you squat, which is supposed to be more natural and eases elimination. I haven't tried it myself, but I saw it for sale at Bed Bath & Beyond. I even saw a young couple (in their twenties) purchasing one! There's a hilarious video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbYWhdLO43Q.

Just another public service announcement. LOL!

  12. And let's not forget that somehow, mushrooms also don't fully get digested! Yes, I do think the aging body has to make lots of adjustments when it comes to doing things we used to take for granted. There's also supposed to be a step that fits around the bottom of the toilet that allows your feet/legs to be elevated, and that's supposed to help with #2. Saw that at Ace Hardware about a month ago.

  13. I'm one of those infuriating people who never get constipated. I think it's all the fruit I eat.

  14. I have seen the step sold in our local drug store. I also read that if you gently pinch the fleshy part between your thumb and finger (I wouldn't recommend this without verifying as I really can't remember when or where I read this now) it is supposed to relieve constipation. It's funny that as we get older these conversations become more popular. If I had heard my parents or grandparents talking like this when I was young, I couldn't have gotten out of the room fast enough :) However, these days I learn a lot by listening to my friends and reading posts such as yours, and find myself appreciating them. Thanks Kay!

  17. I read Patty's poop post A while back and tried the blowing but it didn't work for me. How well. Maybe it will work for that young woman who overheard you.

  19. j: my prob is unless it's urgent, I have a hard time voiding my bladder. My doc told me the opposite of most older folks. I have to sit and force #1 out and it takes a long time to empty. It's cuz I am always holding it in and guess developed a really strong muscle or sumthin'. But when I gotta go, yes it is like a waterfall. I take metformin so being stuck is not an issue, just the opposite, unfortunately. It can be literally explosive, so if I'm going out and eating I won't take it until I get home. And yes, our nether regions start occupying us as we get older cuz the plumbing is getting old and sometimes plugged like any old pipe! BB

    1. By the way, I had the same problem with Metformin. My nurse practitioner changed the Metformin to a slow acting Metformin so it's really not bad now. That first version can give you that bad side effect.

I’m using Comment Moderation for any post that is more than a day old because of aggravating SPAM. I'm sorry to have to do this, but again... sigh... it's the spam that's driving me crazy.
