Visiting Family in California

We decided it was time to visit Art's sister and brother-in-law in California. Although they speak to each other every weekend, we haven't been back for a visit in ummm... four years.

One of the first things for us to consider was what to bring for omiyage (gifts). They have dietary restrictions so we had to really think. Art's sister loves fruitcake just as he does and I had found that fabulous recipe from Jalna's blog. I prepared three loaves for her. Eventually we got our gifts ready and we were on our way.

Once we got to California we had to again come up with a way to identify Art's sister and myself. For the first couple of days, every time he called us, his sister and I would both answer. Her name is also Kay! We eventually decided me would call me "Sweetie," like he often does at home.

Before we left Hawaii, we'd gone to Tripler to meet our new doctor since our nurse practitioner had retired. Sigh... We missed Kathy, but now love Dr. Jeanne too. Dr. Jeanne says she feels diabetes is reversible and considers me now PREdiabetic. I love it. She suggested we watch Forks Over Knives on Netflix or Amazon. We watched it in California since we don't subscribe to Netflix or Amazon in Hawaii.

Our meals were fabulous and very healthy.

Here was one example.

Art's sister is very health conscious and served us delicious meals that contained 75% vegetables. The kinpira gobo (burdock root) was sent as a gift by my mother.

I tested the glucose in my blood later in the evening and it was 95. You can have up to 140 and be safe. I was very happy.

It was good to be in California.

  1. With the brandy in the fruit cake it had to be good. Did they love the cake? Happy for your glucose test results.

  3. That sure does look delicious. I used to eat burdock root years ago. Now I'm thinking I'll try to find some. And that is very good news about being pre- rather than diabetic! :-)

  6. My husband's numbers were almost in the pre diabetic range last September. We went on a moderately low-carb diet and all of his labs improved, some of them dramatically. Glad you have a good doctor. It makes all the difference.

    1. Hi Bella! Thank you so much for your visit. Yay for your husband! That's wonderful. My glucose had actually gone down when I was visiting my sister-in-law. It's gotta be all the vegetables.

  7. But, can they have fruitcake? Yes, that's how we are trying to eat too.
She says waving at you from down near the border.

  8. Forks Over Knives is great. Did you hear recently that people that go to women doctors live longer? Glad you are making such great progress. Enjoy California and your family.

  12. So nice to be able to visit with Art's sister, doubly good as she is so health conscious. Sometimes it can be hard visiting when we are trying to be good and our hosts aren't as bothered. Your fruitcake also sounds delicious.

  14. I prefer meals that are about 75% vege. I eat less and less meat all of the time. I fix it for tom though.
I hope the rain stopped while you were in CA.

  16. I think it is just great that you spread this information. Why, oh why, can't people understand that eating well is so much better for them. Good for you!

  18. I think the sweet tooth is the hardest thing to deal with. I can't have cookies or candy around the house, because Terry just eats them all up.
