You know I'm having difficulty finding something to write about when I wander around the house staring at things.
This time my eyes alighted on my shampoo bottle.
I used to wash my hair everyday. Then I read somewhere that you shouldn't wash your hair so often because you're drying out your hair by removing natural oils that are actually good for your scalp and hair.
I looked on WebMD and got this:
On the other hand this also popped up on WebMD.
Arrghhh...
So I wash my hair about every three days and I have found it doesn't get as oily as quickly anymore. Also I've been diluting my shampoo with 1 part water/1part shampoo.
The nice thing is I find it lathers up much faster and you use a lot less shampoo. It also washes out faster.
Art scoffed at this initially, but he's started to dilute his shampoo a little now too. He does wash his hair everyday.
How often do you shampoo your hair?

I looked on WebMD and got this:
"The experts agree: Only a small group needs to shampoo daily, like those with very fine hair, someone who exercises a lot (and sweats), or someone living in a very humid place, Goh says.
“If you have oily scalp, then daily washing is needed,” she explains. “Sometimes, people think they have dry scalp because they have dandruff, but in those situations, more frequent washing is also helpful.”
On the other hand this also popped up on WebMD.
"A good benchmark for hair washing should be twice a week or when you feel your hair needs it," says top hair consultant Scott Cornwall. Then they quoted someone else in the same article that said since you wash the rest of your body daily, why not your hair?

Diluting the shampoo is a very good idea. Thanks Kay.
ReplyDeleteI wash my hair as needed and that is often every day because of fine hair, exercise, wearing, bike helmet, and bed head. I don't color my hair and I try to eat healthy and I thinks that is important. I keep my hair short so very little shampoo is needed.
ReplyDeleteMy sister-in-law has not shampooed her hair for years now. There's a whole movement about that you can check out on line. She uses baking soda or just rinses with water and her hair is really very nice looking. She got other family members doing that, but not me. I did try that 6 in 1 cleansing balm but it left my hair flat.
I laughed at loud at your opening line!
When I cooked for living every day, in sales now every other day.Love your blog enjoy your sense of humour.
ReplyDeleteEvery other day....I do have fine hair and if I wait any more that every other day to wash my hair, it's awful!
ReplyDeleteevery 3 days like you Kay!
ReplyDeleteI wash my hair three or four times a week, and I think I'll try that diluting trick. I get my shampoo from a large container at the food co-op and put it in a reusable container to keep my plastic use lower. Good post! :-)
ReplyDeleteDuring the summer I wash my hair every day. When the weather is cooler I get it wet when I shower (to take care of bedhead), but only use shampoo when it feels dirty.
ReplyDeleteI do it once a day
ReplyDeleteabout every 3-4 days...my hair is fine and lays too flat if dirty.
ReplyDeleteI use a shampoo that is the same color as my hair, bright red. I have to use a special cleaner in the shower to get the red off of the white subway tile. When teaching, and younger, I shampooed my hair every other day, but now that I'm older, I find every two days works well. Sometimes, I can even stretch it to three days.
ReplyDeleteAlternate days. I do work out (like mom :) on my treadmill.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, we washed our hair the Victorian way....once a week. Boy my hair got awful between washings. Then I started washing my hair far more often. Now that I shower at the pool every day, I find washing all my hair every other day works well. Washing just the part that was in the pool chlorine is done every day. No rotten hair, and I think my hair overall is healthier.
ReplyDeleteGood idea!!!
ReplyDeleteLike the watering down of the shampoo idea. Every 3 to 4 days unless I garden or mow the lawn--then the same day.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with less washing, especially as I am aging. Everything is drying out!
ReplyDeleteHair Stink (HS) is a major peeve for me. BO smells like onions/garlic, HS is a sweet cloying order. I think that's why ppl say old people have that smell. I notice certain ethnicities have a worse stink that others. I notice it's always with older women 40+ and a few men. Most of these women have big hair and I think it's caused by using stuff like hair spray combined with sweat creates that HS. One time there was a HS so bad it filled the pharmacy at Longs...I could literally follow the stink to an Asian woman with big hair. It was so awful. I notice some men have it, the ones with hair and that use the greasy kid stuff. Bald men don't stink, along with younger women. I went to Marukai and it was filled with older Asian woman and the stink was incredible. It's so strong that it wafts pass me as they pass by. gag gag gag. So please, I don't care what the doctors say, wash your hair. I think like BO most ppl don't realize they stink and probably the family gets use to it. Since I learned about HS in my 40s I went from every other day to daily shampoos. Whether it was long hair or short like now, I shampoo it nightly. Esp. with our weather here, we all perspire. My nose will thank you. BB
ReplyDeleteI wash my hair twice a week. Tuesdays and Saturdays.
ReplyDeleteNow diluting the shampoo sounds like a very good idea!
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, today happens to be shampoo day! Keep posting about anything, thanks Kay!
ReplyDeleteWashing my hair is just part of my daily shower. I sweat a lot when I exercise walk, and I just like freshly styled hair, not sleep flattened.
ReplyDeleteGreat information, Kay. Thanks for sharing Web-MD's information...interesting. I had to laugh at your opening sentence, I do that sometimes myself.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have male pattern baldness, the hair that I do have looks better washed. I usually do it every second day, but daily would be better just going by looks. Mt wife OTOH has dry hair and only washes it weekly.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great idea Kay!!! Wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteI tried using diluted shampoo today, and I love it.
The shampoo was distributed more evenly over my scalp. My scalp and hair is much cleaner Even with less shampoo and less water and less shower/shampoo time.
