Tying Up Loose Laces

A while ago, Patti of The New Sixty wrote about a study on why shoelaces come untied. I mentioned it to Art and he reminded me of the shoe salesman in Illinois who taught us how to tie laces so they don't come untied.

Art insisted I should do a blog about it.  I told him it would be too difficult to explain how to tie it the way the salesman showed us.

So... he got his shoe and told me I should take photos of the steps. I did and he quickly agreed that it was too hard to show and explain.

So what's the best thing to do?

Look it up online, of course!

I discovered that there are a ton of ways to tie your shoelaces. Who knew?

Ian, that's who. Ian has a blog site called Ian's Shoelace Site. He's got 18 different ways to tie shoelaces!

And wouldn't you know he's got the exact method the shoe salesman showed us? It's called the Surgeon's Shoelace Knot, Tibetan Trekking Knot or Sherpa Knot. The most wonderful thing is that Ian's diagrams show you clearly how to do it.

Art says he always ties his shoes that way when he goes running and it never comes loose.

And the nice thing is that when you pull the ends of the laces, it comes apart just like when I tie it the usual way. Granted, my usual way might not be your usual way since I now know there are 18 different ways to tie your shoelaces.

Message to my grandson:

Happy Boys Day, Sweetie Pie!

Someday grandpa and I will show you how to tie your shoelaces too.

  1. That is how I tie my shoes and I always called it a nursery knot...i guess because a nursery school teacher showed me how to do it! I like it because it stays secure and is easy to untie.

  2. I haven't clicked, but I can tell you that I tie my shoes backwards from what most people do. Although it doesn't seem to affect my reading, I seem to have a touch of something like dyslexia when it comes to technical/mechanical things. But it works, so what the heck.

  3. Went to the link to see what this was about. Just now put on my exercise sneakers and tried the new knot. Very cool. It works. I'll have to remember this with other shoes because I find my slacks loosen my shoelaces sometimes. I think this new knot )new to me) will solve that problem.

  4. I went to the link and checked it out. I'll have to try it. I always double tie my shoelaces when I exercise so they won't come lose. This looks better. Is there some reason that the rest of the lacing on Art's shoes looks so strange? :-)

    1. Hmmm.... I didn't even notice. I think it's because the holes are punched in differently. I think.

  5. I discovered Ian's site when I was doing my original blog back in 2008. I've been tying my shoes the 'correct' way ever since.

  8. Well, I reached the age of not being able to bend down and using velcro straps on my shoes long ago. And my shoes are actually orthopedic sneakers 99% of the time. Good thing I live in Hawaii, as I need a contraption to put on socks. I don't even need socks most of the time. I'll be reaching 81 next month and I'm feeling like I beat the odds, so why should I complain. Not complaining, just explaining.

  9. Mine is a pretty simple one, not sure what it's called per se. I do remember it being one of the first things that scared me as a kid from the social pressure

  10. Remember learning to tie your laces. It was a big deal then too!

  11. Ha ha, not easy to explain is it? I thought about explaining but gave up. I am evidently doing it the right way for mine almost never come untied--except that day when both did. I do remember that first time I successfully tied my own as a child. I was one proud little sucker.

  12. Great piece of information. I never use laced shoes anymore, but my grandchildren do...

  13. I think that is the way I tie mine when I go for a hike or long walk?

  14. I had to smile when I read this post as I invariably have shoelaces that come undone especially those made with nylon. The older cotton ones were never such a problem. I also watched a video on NPS recently explaining the best way to keep a lace from untying.

  15. You surprised me with 18 ways to tie you shoes. I only know one way to tie my shoes.

  16. OK, I tried the Surgeon's knot, since it is just an additional step to my usual way. Since double knotting is not easy to untie, and my laces do come undone, I'll be giving this a try. Thanks!
