Keola is a wonderful uncle. He really makes an effort to give time and attention to 10 year old KC whenever we're visiting and she adores him. KC had been looking forward to playing board games with her uncle again after he introduced a game called Pandemic to her last year. I guess we shouldn't be too surprised that he would choose a game like this since his degree centers on international Epidemiology.
At 10 years of age, I must tell you that my granddaughter is amazing at strategizing. I've seen her play games like Monopoly, Clue and Catan which Keola gave her and it never ceases to impress me.
Sadly, I am not good at any of these games. They did convince me to play one game of Pandemic with them and the world was lost to the disease. After that, I let them save the world without me.
The really unique thing about this game is that everybody has to work together to win. If you don't do the correct moves with emphasis on together, you will have lost and the world would be consumed by the pandemic. I don't know of another game where players work together instead of against each other.

"Four diseases have broken out in the world and it is up to a team of specialists in various fields to find cures for these diseases before mankind is wiped out. Players must work together playing to their characters' strengths and planning their strategy of eradication before the diseases overwhelm the world with ever-increasing outbreaks. For example the Operation Specialist can build research stations which are needed to find cures for the diseases. The Scientist needs only 4 cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal 5. But the diseases are out breaking fast and time is running out: the team must try to stem the tide of infection in diseased areas while also towards cures. A truly cooperative game where you all win or you all lose."Before leaving for Maryland, KC kept reminding us how much she wanted to play Pandemic with Uncle Keola again.

I taught all my grandchildren the board game Wahoo.It teaches them strategy needed to win the game. I always told them I would not cut them any slack and let them win so eventually they could all beat me. Sure enough! They eventually could all beat me.

ReplyDeleteI am not much of a board game/card game playing person although I do play when asked. I am just not very good at strategy. I tend not to think that far ahead.

ReplyDeleteLooks a little complicated for any age. My son has tons of memories playing board and card games with my Mom, gambling a little with just pennies. All the grandkids eventually would win at times. The round family game table is now one of his prize possessions, with edges worn. Your son may need to send that game to the White House....Linda in Kansas

Games are a wonderful way for family and friends to connect and be away from their own individual worlds which now evolves around their cell phones. We play Catan - only one winner, and it is rather addicting especially when one loses.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I have them play the Cash Flow game by Robert Kiyosaki. That game is not competing with others, but in making decisions for one's self so everyone can win. It is the most educational game for financial well-being, imo.

ReplyDeleteI like to play games, but I am not very cut throat, so I tend to just want to have fun and not strategize. Isaac loves Monopoly, so I play it with him, but I never win.
Interesting game Kay. I have never heard of it but wasn’t there a movie or a TV show by that name? The most I have played lately was Trivial Persuit when on holiday with the family.
ReplyDeleteI looked it up and there are movies called Pandemic, Epidemic, Outbreak, etc. The movie that I saw with Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Jude Law was called Contagion.
