Wegman's is a huge, gorgeous supermarket in the Maryland area and we love going there. One of our daughter's friends had raved about Wegman's Ultimate chocolate cake a few years ago and we looked for a Wegman's bakery on one of our trips but never found it.
We were surprised to find last year that it was actually Wegman's Supermarket.
Keola and Sarah bought it for JD's birthday last year and again this year. I thought it was good then, but I really loved it this year.
I think what sets it apart is the frosting.
I know, I know. Many people feel chocolate cake is chocolate cake. Whatever...
However, my favorite has always been Cheesecake Factory's Linda's Fudge Cake. If I can't have that, I also like Portillo's chocolate cake. And now Wegman's Ultimate Chocolate Cake has nudged into the #2 spot.
I liked it so much that I had this crazy idea to bring a cake back for an anniversary dinner scheduled with two other couples in Illinois. We have celebrated our January anniversaries together for 36 years. When we started returning to Illinois from Hawaii in the summers, our January anniversary celebrations were moved up to August.
I put the cake in a cooler bag with some blue ice and carried it on the plane from Baltimore to Chicago. The landing at O'Hare was jolting and we were sure the cake was a goner, but amazingly, it survived! And yes! Everyone loved it.
Oh... I brought back a slice for our son-in-law who couldn't make the trip to Maryland. He said he thought the secret was in the frosting. And my daughter? She prefers vanilla. How did that happen?

Sometimes the love of chocolate skips a generation, Kay. At least that's the only explanation I can offer. Love that the cake made it all the way without even a ding in it. :-)

What a wonderful gift you gave by carrying that cake. Vanilla? No explanation....maybe she is teasing you.
ReplyDeleteOh my! I saw your cake and had to chuckle. I always get this cake for special occasions, birthdays and so on. This past weekend we had friends for dinner and this was the dessert, along with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. I have never tried Cheesecake's Chocolate Cake but this is my favorite right now and has been for some time. I smiled again when you said you brought it hoe with you, what a great idea and I am glad that heavy landing didn't damage it. Wegmans originally started in New York, and I remember my brother-in-law who took a business trip up there one year, years ago, raving about this place called Wegmans. Then they started building them down here. We have three within easy distance and one more is being built not too far away. I enjoy going there even when I don't need a lot, it is such a fun place to walk around.

ReplyDeleteThere is a great Wegmans in Rochester, New York. I patronize it when visiting my family. It's on the way to a good Barnes and Noble, so it makes for a nice outing.
ReplyDeleteChocolate icing on chocolate cake would be too much chocolate for me. If it is really special icing, I would like it on plain white cake. I'm not sure if that's what your daughter prefers, or she means vanilla frosting. Chacun a son goût.
So true, Hank. We do all have our own taste. She must take after Art. I could see where chocolate frosting would be good on white cake too. Or chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream.
DeleteIt's great you found a chocolate cake that you enjoy. I always loved chocolate cake while my late mom preferred vanilla. Funny as I got older I started enjoying vanilla cake more. I wonder how that happened? But I still love chocolates :-)

ReplyDeleteI have never had a Wegman's chocolate cake. In fact, I have seldom had any chocolate cake that wasn't homemade, unless it was a piece for dessert in a restaurant. I have country girl roots, and we usually bake our own.
It must be special for you to go to that trouble. Are you coming to Canada anytime soon? ;)
