Ever since returning from Maryland, I've had an earworm that would occasionally stay with me throughout the day.
What's an earworm? It's when you get a song stuck in your head.
When we visited our son and his family this past winter, we found our 2 year old grandson loving the song "Down By the Bay." I'd never heard it before. I've hardly ever heard my son sing but there he was singing "Down By the Bay" beautifully to his son. I looked it up when we got home to Hawaii because I kept forgetting the simple lyrics and was surprised to discover it's actually a traditional song. It was made famous by Raffi.
Here are the lyrics from Wikipedia:

Where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home,
I dare not go,
For if I do,
My mother will say:
After that, you can add your own ideas to the lyrics:
"Did you ever see a _____, _____ing a _____?"
It's a fun teaching tool to practice rhyming.
Did you ever see a cat chasing a rat?
Did you ever see a whale painting a sail?
Did you ever see a pig dancing a jig?
And so on and so forth...
It can go on forever until you run out of ideas and now it's going on forever in my head.

ReplyDeleteA Raffi song, I think...My granddaughters used to sing it a lot when they lived on the Chesapeake Bay. It's fun, but never turned into an earworm for me.
ReplyDeleteBleh. Never heard of the term. Glad it's not a medical problem. Well, find a set of headphones and choose a different song from your own era and time zone that you like, and play it for a few times. Might still have an earworm, but with a different tune. The Disney World ride "It's a Small, Small World" is an easy earworm.....uh oh, here it comes. Cheers, Linda in Kansas

ReplyDeleteI have found if I sing it all the way through, it will go away. Otherwise the chorus will repeat indefinitely. Good luck.

ReplyDeleteI get earworms too, and for a while I hardly notice them, but eventually you really want them to stop!
I've had those a few times. It sometimes helps to listen to the song over and over until you get tired of it -- kind of like fending off a distracting craving for ice cream by just eating it until you don't want any more (but without the calories).
ReplyDeleteBest of luck. I wonder why this happens? Why did humans evolve to love music at all? It doesn't much resemble anything in nature.
That is fun. We did Facetime with our grandie in Vancouver, and she was listening to a Peppa Pig song she couldn't stop listening to!
