I have no idea why we suddenly got so many scams and credit card problems while we were traveling in Europe. Is it because I was using the unsecured WiFi on the Viking ship?
At times I didn't know what to believe. At one point, when I checked my blog, some parts were coming out in Spanish. I was in Germany, for goodness sakes! Eventually, it switched back to English.
Then I got this text warning of some sort about someone trying to log into my device.
I saw that it was from Honduras and it was about an iPhone 7 which I don't have.
I'm used to email scams, but now I guess I have to worry about text message scams too. Arrrghhhh!
My senior brain often times has difficulty figuring out what is real and what is not. I get upgrade notices occasionally on my computer and I don't know whether it's real either.
It's a scary world out in cyber space.

That's creepy! Did you change all your passwords?

ReplyDeleteIt is scary and sad to think that there are so many out there willing to take advantage of others. We need to be vigilant, probably more vigilant than I can even begin to imagine.
ReplyDeleteWhen traveling or using any public WiFi I always use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) that I pay for on an annual basis. I used it in the international AirBnBs, and locally—in fact anywhere I connect on my phone or iPad. I think, for me, my access to the internet is necessary for travel arrangements, so I willingly pay for that peace of mind. I think paying for a VPN is better than a free one —based upon my reading and the old adage. Even so, I recently fell for what looked like a message from Apple...luckily I stopped due to a doubt in my brain, before I entered my Apple password. I called Apple & was advised to change passwords, as had entered my user name. It’s a new world out there—and I recently retired from being a teacher librarian technology person! I am constantly amazed at the younger people I know who use the same password for everything! Now many of us have wholeheartedly shifted to online everything there is an underlying concern for me as to how easily that ground is no longer firm—probably has never been. Yet I do not want to give up the ease of and access to the world of information.

ReplyDeleteYes, after all that, change your password. I am so sorry. We don't have that problem but don't use anything apple.
ReplyDeleteThe language of those texts is so bad. You know it's from someone who does not use English as their native language. I use all Apple products and if I log in somewhere else, I get a message from Apple. The English is perfect and grammatically correct. Always check the address from which these messages are sent. Just place your cursor over the address and see if it's real. Especially important for those "updates" you are asked to make. Most of those are FAKE.
ReplyDeleteScams abound. It is hard to know what to do. Mostly I follow the rule "Don't click" unless you know for sure.

ReplyDeleteHere's a tip: Highlight the thing you're wondering about, then right click on it. One of the choices should be to google or search the thing! Others have solved it. I fix many issues, and check stuff out all the time that way, dear!

DeleteI get notices from Google about potential scammers trying to access my account and being blocked. Glad they are on my side. My son says to change my passwords but I don't. Too hard to remember what I changed and what I didn't change.
