We recently went to the Open (Farmers) Market. The sun comes up later these days so we have to bring a flashlight. There are several officials at each market who have marked off spacing in the line at each booth. Masks and social distancing are carefully monitored, probably because there are mostly vulnerable senior citizens at this very early morning time.
This was the first time we've seen anyone not wear a mask at the Open Market. Everyone is always respectful of each other. The officials must have just missed seeing her. As we were leaving, I told the official about her and they immediately rushed over to correct the situation.
When we went to the Open Market this week, we mentioned it to our favorite farmer. He told us it was terrible. He'd asked her to wear a mask and get into line. She went into a rant about how terrible the Mayor was when she'd actually voted for him. She felt it was wrong to demand that she wear a mask or wait in such a long line, etc. etc. etc.
We sympathized with our farmer friend who said we would be surprised at how often they've encountered this during their days at other locations. Our town is really very, very good about following COVID safety rules from what we've seen at all our grocery outings. We thought this was an anomaly. Our farmer bemoaned the fact that we do have that percentage of people who are incredibly selfish thinking only of their "rights."
So yes, we have them in Hawaii too. Sigh...
It is a real shame, I don't understand all of this anger over having to wear a mask--aren't their far bigger things to be angry about? The homeless, family members with cancer? It's so silly & selfish I can't stand it. On the other hand, look at that beautiful sunrise. Kay, from my frigid view (it's only 11F here) you live in a magical place!

ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of saying "My right to continue breathing trumps your right to go maskless"but nobody loves a pun. Also too timid. I was in line to get checked in at the lab to get my blood work done. There were lines on the floor to indicate the 6 feet distance, but I felt someone come right up behind me. I turned to ask them to step back and saw a large man looming there with TRUMP across his mask.
ReplyDeleteSome people are so protective of their "rights". I always tell that type of person their rights end where mine begin.
ReplyDeleteI rarely encounter maskless people in my neighborhood and community, but there are certainly plenty of people who just don't have any common sense. Glad you pointed out that scofflaw.

ReplyDeleteMy entire life I have been told to wear a shirt and shoes if I want service. If I go to someone's house and they ask me to remove my shoes, I always do. I don't understand why a mask should be any different. When I see people like that, I try to imagine them getting Covid and should they survive, helping to contribute to building up herd immunity. That always cheers me up.
ReplyDeleteYep, if i happen to visit at someone's house, they certainly have the right to ask guests to remove their shoes. And as a guest, i have the right to make my shoeless stay as short as politely possible - then get out of there, and never ever darken their door again. As for masks, their a pain, but it's only common courtesy - we live in a society where hypochondriacs rule ... is what it is. Why fuss.

ReplyDeleteSo many other countries have demonstrated that wearing masks, distancing and common sense cleanliness DO work in preventing transmission. I don't understand why this group is so selfish and hard-headed. (except that they listen to politicians who don't understand or respect science--or reality)

ReplyDeleteGlad the Islanders are only coming across an occasional non-compliant person. Even with local orders, I still see 15% to 25% of people in a drug or grocery store or Quik Trip not wearing a mask. I've even had to tell the Quik Trip employees to cover their noses. They look at me so stunned. I tell them I'm an RN and covid hangs in the air for 3 hours. Then they wonder if the police are nearby! Most folks just don't get the science, nor read about it. Just had to explain to another person why they needed to still wear a mask even after both vaccines. Sigh. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteStores are quite strict over here so people are all masked when we go grocery shopping. I even see some people wearing masks when they’re out walking alone. Locals are very careful. Our problem are the tourists who are skipping quarantine. It was just in the news that one couple tried to bribe an airport security person to disregard the fact that they were not tested for COVID before coming to Hawaii.
DeleteSo sorry that happened. I really don't understand that behavior. Self centered and spoiled. People are pretty compliant here in Walla Walla for the most part. Not at first but we are small enough so if someone gets sick or dies you hear about it right away. Then people started being more considerate.

ReplyDeleteIt is a good thing that they had security there. My daughter had a vacation stay in Waikiki and she said that there were so many people in Waikiki not wearing masks. Most of them were from the Mainland as tourists - who didn't know any better.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... How can they NOT know? Then again if they feel it’s perfectly safe to board an airplane and come here, they must think it’s safe not to wear a mask or that COVID is not a threat. The Mayor or Governor is planning to now put up signs all over Waikiki, right? Isn’t it sad that we have to resort to this?
DeleteI continue to be baffled by mask refusal, but it is definitely a carry over from a president who called the pandemic a hoax and made it a political badge of the MAGA movement to not wear one.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, the thing I liked best about open, farmer's markets, was just strolling along and looking. Now that you have to stand in line and have a purpose for shopping, I just don't go. I miss it though.

ReplyDeleteOur farmer's market is in winter status at the moment, held indoors and with less vendors than at the height of the harvest season. It's managed by staff who control access into the building.
It's hard to understand that behaviour.

ReplyDeleteThat goes on here in Missouri all the time. I sometimes think they are in the majority, the people who think it's all about them and don't want their rights violated. It has almost driven me mad, and I am not kidding. I told Cliff the other day, "I really think I need to see somebody about my anger and depression."
