The other morning Art told me that he was shocked I did not get up around 1:00 in the morning when the smoke alarm started chirping because the battery was dying. He thought I might be devious enough to pretend I didn't hear it so I wouldn't have to get up.😏
Understand that Art wears hearing aids. I have excellent hearing 😁(sort of). Hence his suspicion.
"How is it that you can hear the pigeons land on the roof and even hear their cooing with the windows closed in your office BUT not hear the loud smoke alarm chirping in the hall?" he asked skeptically."Cross my heart," I said. "I didn't hear a thing." I even showed him my Fitbit which recorded that I did not get up.
And yet, Art has told me the story of the cross country trip he took with a buddy when he was in the Air Force many moons ago.
They'd stopped at a hotel exhausted from the driving and went to sleep. In the middle of the night, there was a fire in the building next to their hotel and there was a lot of commotion with fire engines blaring their sirens, etc. The friend apparently watched while the building burned and Art never got up. In fact, he was surprised to see the charred aftermath the following morning.
Interesting because I usually get an hour or two less sleep than Art in the evenings but the Fitbit almost always shows I have much more deep sleep.
Ah well...
And about those pigeons. They never sleep on our neighbor's roof anymore since Art has been vigilantly shooting them with ice pellets when I hear them land on our roof.
The other wonderful thing is that we are no longer getting those terrible welts from bird mites for the last several months. 🤞 Hopefully, the birds will eventually give up.
Hopefully.

My Larry also can't hear as well as I can. We gave up on those loud noisy things years ago. And every time I cooked something, it would go off! Tired of them.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the pigeons!
hugs
Donna
I hope you have won the pigeon battle!
ReplyDeleteThe chirping can be so annoying. Good for you to sleep right through it. Don wakes up if a pillow falls on the floor. I can sleep through a fire next door,
ReplyDeleteThis honestly just happened to me a couple weeks ago. Got up one morning around 7am, was surprised I slept in later than usual, came into my livingroom and suddenly heard that godawful CHIRP--CHIRP from my smoke alarm. I thought "Well, it was nice of it to wait until I woke up this morning." After I had some coffee and got dressed, I opened my apt door to go get my mail--there was a note taped to it from my neighbor. It said "Your smoke alarm has been beeping since 3am, change the battery!"
ReplyDeleteI want you to know that when I read your comment to Art, he did LOL. He totally understands how that could happen. When he was younger, he was a deep sleeper. He sleeps more now but it's a lighter sleep.
DeleteSorry, I doubt the birds ever give up. Battle on.
ReplyDeleteYup. Two birds just landed on the roof. Darn!
DeleteI could not imagine not hearing that awful chirp. Of course, one of our alarms is only three feet away from the bed. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger, I could sleep through just about anything. Now it is rare that I sleep so deeply. Occasionally it does happen and I wake up feeling refreshed but a little bit lost feeling.
ReplyDeleteI am probably more hearing-challenged that Art. I have much loss. So I probably wouldn’t hear either. But I do wake up a lot too, so I might have become aware. If I need to set an alarm, I make sure my watch is charged, and I set it first and foremost before the phone or Alexa. At least I will feel the vibrations from the watch even if I don’t hear it.
ReplyDeleteThe chirps of a dying battery drive me nuts. I bought 10 year smoke detectors to avoid that issue but they'll probably chirp also. I have 8 in my house so it's tough to tell which one is misbehaving. And one is on the cathedral ceiling!
ReplyDeleteMy smoke alarm just chirped it's way into a new battery but it was a 10-am, while I was drinking coffee. I think different people hear different sounds better. Maybe. Who knows. :-)
ReplyDeleteLin Floyd says congrats on less bird mites...good luck with battery chirps...lol!
ReplyDeleteThe pidgeons learned!
ReplyDeleteI live a few blocks from a fire station. I'm used to waking up in the night to trucks going by, but almost instantly fall back to sleep.
ReplyDeleteI hear the smoke alarm but don't know if it's smoke or some other detector. Then I start looking for the one that's chirping. By that time the place would be burned down.
ReplyDeleteYay! You perhaps, hopefully, may have won the pigeon battle. I think hearing things depends on how deep a sleep you are in at the time.
ReplyDeleteThe chirps of a dying battery is so annoying especially at 1.00am !!!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Does Art sleep with his hearing aids in? Most folks don't. Some people hear treble sounds better; I used to hear bass sounds better. Maybe, just maybe, is the chirping keeping the pigeons away? Can Art set up an alarm on the roof that chirps if a bird lands on it, or motion-activated? I was out of town one time, and got a phone call from my duplex neighbor that one of my alarms was chirping loudly. I had to send my friend over that has a key to remove the battery til I got home. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteNo, Art doesn't sleep with his hearing aids on but the chirping is pretty loud and he is a pretty light sleeper. I sincerely doubt the smoke detector chirps would keep the birds away. They are awfully smart. However, so far so good... we don't see many pigeons coming to our roof anymore.
DeleteI don't wear my aides when there are no people around. And I hate it when I forget them and go downstairs for dinnter!
ReplyDeleteHahaha! It surprises me that Art even thinks that you could be devious about such a thing, or anything, for that matter. Holly
ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: I always end up as Anonymous when I use my iPad. Hi Holly! Yay! You were able to comment! This is so much fun! Well… hmmm… could I be devious? If it requires killing a B-52 roach or shudder a cane spider… I will be somewhere else hiding. But the chirping? I seriously didn’t hear a thing.
DeleteMy hearing is not good, but I don't have a hearing aid... yet. But even though I can't hear everything on TV (use closed caption), I can hear low sounds like when the postman's truck rumbles by outside. But 'I think' I would hear the loud chirp of the smoke alarm... at least I hope I could.
ReplyDeleteThose alarm chirps drive me crazy. It's a good thing you didn't hear them.
ReplyDeleteThese fitbits sound very interesting and am seriously thinking of getting one. We have had our own issues with the alarms but none lately, touch wood! I have been known to sleep through horrendous thunderstorms, none of those lately either :)
ReplyDeleteI've never had a fitbit.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your comments and those of the people who comment. But I am Margie from Margie's Musings. ...not Anonymous!
ReplyDeletePerfect timing, Kay! Thanks for your story! Just read this post on same day that Dave’s phone alarm woke me this morning, playing a musical phrase. He didn’t hear it, as he doesn’t wear his hearing aids at night either. After waiting through about 3 plays, I woke him to let him know what I heard. I was sure I heard the sound from his side of our bedroom, and he insisted it had to be from his phone on the charger in another room. Turns out, his apple watch relayed the alarm ⏰ in same room! From Carole in Illinois.
ReplyDeleteHi Carole! That's so funny. My Apple watch is not turning on when I lift my arm for some reason and I don't have an alarm on it since I always wake up early anyway. I hope it's a musical phrase you like hearing.
