Another Cardboard Project

Between mom, Art and me, we have a lot of pills to keep track of.

Sadly, with mom's worsening dementia, I can't trust her to take her own pills anymore even though I used to put them in a weekly pill holder marked for each day. She forgets a lot. Sooo, between Art and me, we dispense her medications and supplements.

I have all her pills in this aluminum pan in the kitchen on a shelf that she can't reach. I also made a list so we don't make a mistake as to which pill she must have for morning or night.

I also have Art and my daytime pills and vitamins/supplements in a metal pan on an even higher shelf. Unfortunately, every time we take our pill tray down, the bottles move and Art has complained noted that my pills are mixed up with his.

Soooo.... I'm thinking that I could make a cardboard organizer.

I need to get more Elmer's glue and maybe some paper tape which would be easier to use than this linen tape that Art used to frame the family puzzle he completed during the pandemic.

I keep a lot of sturdy cardboard every time I get an Amazon shipment.

Still, I decided to strengthen this organizer with two layers of carboard.

Gave it two coats of white house paint I happened to have.

The rear slot is for back-up meds we have.

I have a lot more than Art because he keeps his other medications upstairs to take when he wakes up.

I decided to take D3 and B12 just because I read online that it can help with vertigo.

We'll see.

And here it is. Won't Art be surprised when he returns from Tanzania! 😁

Yup... he went on another trip. This time he'd gone with our professional photographer friend, Dave.

I'm sure I'll be able to share some of their photos later.

I showed my genius brother my pill holder and he praised my finished product. He's a really nice brother.

And he shared what he made for his granddaughter. He used cups and cardboard to make a Paw Patrol headquarters.

Is he amazing or what?

  1. You are both very talented when it comes to cardboard! Pills are such an important thing and not something I thought about much until my last surviving grandma had problems. She kept getting foggy and repeating stuff and we suspected the medications but she hated the thought of someone else managing them for her. She felt it was a major loss of her independence. She eventually fell and broke a hip and ended up in a nursing home rehab unit and she didn't have a choice then. The nurses managed her pills. The beautiful thing is that the old grandma re-emerged and was sharp as a tack, proving to me anyway that someone handling her pills was a good thing. Long story short, she got out of rehab and went back to managing her pills against our protest and went back to the foggy mental state, broke her other hip and returned again. This last time, she finally let my aunt manage her pills for good until she died last week.

I'm glad that you are able to manage your mom's pills and it has been a valuable lesson to me when I'm older about relinquishing control of my medication to those who might have clearer/younger minds.

  2. I can see that paper crafting runs in the family. You both are good examples of re-uses for things that might otherwise just be thrown out.

  3. Wow. You and your brother are very talented paper crafters. I am so impressed. Also impressed with Art's desire to travel.

  4. What a clever idea! I'm not creative or crafty so I'm lost in admiration. Tanzania! What an adventure--I can't wait to see photos.

  7. Kay, I stay low on Vitamin D3 and B-12... and even though I take supplements, they don't always bring my values up. My complaints (which were at one point thought to be congestive heart failure - NOT!) are low energy, fatigue, racing heart, and light - headed (especially in the morning). Taking the B-12 injections now and they seem to help (just FYI).

  8. Once again, your clever craftiness shines. Your brother's too. Of course you can buy organizers, but yours are tailor made for just what you need, and they come with such a sense of accomplishment!
Yes, of course, I will want to hear all about Art's travels in Tanzania!

  9. Especially with your Mom's falls or blood pressures, that's good to prepare and handle her meds for her; AND keeping them high away from her. You have made a jolly pill bottle holder. I'm thinking that exclusive Paw Patrol creation isn't for your brother, but a younger child! I use those plastic pill cases and change the writing on the squares to the day of the month. I prepare theme one month at a time. I have two sets, so I can prepare the next month's pills and know what I have to reorder before running out. I have a pill case for the month for each time of day: morning, late afternoon and night. A case with the bigger cubicles holds my supplements since they tend to be bigger. Stay healthy!
