Using the Magic Eraser

Our friend, Dave showed us a new trick we could do with our Google photo app on our iPhones.

He demonstrated it by taking a photo of Art and me with people behind us.

We were totally blown away so I went home and tried it myself.

Sure enough. I was able to remove distracting people from our photo from Tokyo.

And this is how I did it.

After you click on Magic eraser, it will also give you suggestions on what it can remove. You can also circle what you want to take out so I did it here on this photo. Then you can either erase the suggestions or choose your own.

However, if you enlarge the photo, it might look a little weird where you've removed someone. So I'm thinking that if the people you're trying to remove is too big, it will be more difficult.

It's really a handy tool for small distractions you want to remove from your almost perfect photo.

  1. As far as I know, I don't have a feature like this as a default app on my iPhone but I have a similar one on my photo processing software on my desktop. It is a bit more sophisticated and allows you to get better results as long as you have plenty of background in the right texture/shade/style to choose from to replace the undesired object. Otherwise, you get weird blurry artifacts like the Google Magic Eraser. I'm hoping Apple will update their camera editing app with something similar though.

  2. AI can help a lot. These things were always removable in Photoshop, but it could be painstaking and probably not as good anywya.

  7. I haven't been using Goggle Photo App, but I just downloaded it. I'll play with it later as I'm not sure how it fits in with my iCloud.

  8. I know I used it every day on my pixel phone! You can get rid of a telephone pole in the middle of your picture or just about anything. Sometimes it's not perfect but I really enjoy using it too. Aloha dear!
