This is just a silly post.
I don't like spiders. They have creeped me out since I was little. We had creepy garden spiders that I won't even show you because it will creep me out to look at my post. I hated the giant cane spiders that were about 5 feet across. Just kidding. They were more like 3 inches wide, but they would sit on the wall until you came into the room and then go skittering here or there... I never knew which way they'd go.
Once, I walked into my bedroom in our sugar plantation camp house and a giant cane spider fell on me and seemed to run around my muumuu before I screamed, shook and made it fall to the floor. I yelled at my brother to do something but it turned out that he didn't like them either.
Anyway, I don't like spiders.
However, the other day Art noticed something he just had to show me.
But I still don't like spiders.
Spiders used to bother me a lot more than they do now. I guess that's a result of raising a houseful of boys. (Although that giant cane spider sounds pretty creepy.)
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan either of the big ones. The little ones I can suck up into the vacuum. Daddy Long Legs are not technically spiders but I can manage to grab them by a leg and toss them out. Anything else gets a good swatting and is smushed.
ReplyDeleteMe either! I am reminded of a time I went to use the bathroom during the early morning hours in the Philippines. It was a very small hall bathroom that was only the width of the door and not much deeper. As I sat there, it was only then I noticed the giant spider that was perhaps a foot in diameter, not sitting on the door knob. How was I to get out? After very nervously contemplating the situation for awhile, I got my drawers pulled up and just kind of waved my hand in the general direction of the spider hoping it would go to one side or the other. It jumped to the wall very near my head and went skittering past behind me. I'm pretty sure my feet never hit the floor as I exited the bathroom and slammed the door behind me.
ReplyDeleteHalf an hour later, my wife gets up and is heading towards the same bathroom. I told her there was a very large spider in there but she just chided me for disliking spiders. Two minutes later there was a blood curdling scream as she came running out with her pants around her ankles, waking everyone in the house up with assumptions of a murder taking place. She is a bit more respectful when I point out spiders to her now!
Kay of Musings: I had to read your comment to Art. Art says your story is even better than mine. We are both still chuckling.
DeleteThat was a very industrious spider to make that tightrope from one plant to the other. Maybe Art can find it in one of the plants for your next post? I smash them. I saw a tarantula in my Oklahoma backyard when I was young. I left it alone and never saw it again. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: Tarantula??? Holy smokes! I’ve never seen a tarantula except in zoos.
DeleteI actually like spiders. The big ones, not so much.
ReplyDeleteIt's Mary G. My husband is grossed out by spiders. Once he was reclining on a rocker couch, reading, and one came down on its silk thread between him and his book. He rolled away, the rocker rocked, and he and the spider ended up on the floor together. I confess that I was laughing pretty hard as I untangled them.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! Ouch! Poor guy... I'd be on the floor too. LOL
DeleteI don't mind the usual varieties that I find here, but I'd rather not encounter the big ones.
ReplyDeleteI love spider webs but don't like spiders much. However, I'm much more terrified of earwigs. In Senegal where the spiders are gigantic, they believe it to be bad luck to kill one so my older daughter had to learn to tolerate/ignore them. Very hard to do when they're big enough to have their own zip code!
ReplyDeleteI am terrified of spiders but I also like them because they eat bugs and such. When I was a youngster growing up in Palolo Valley, I would sometimes wear a rain jacket with a hoodie. One day while walking home from school in my jacket I noticed a HUGE garden spider in the hoodie and I ran all the way home screaming. When I reached home my father calmly removed the spider. Phew! Of course, if I was smarter I would have taken off the jacket instead of running home with it on.
ReplyDeleteGood gosh! This is hilarious! I can't even imagine what I would have done. I hate those garden spiders. I would have been scarred for life.
DeleteAll God's creatures! My kids used to hate them, still do -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThis grudging admiration of someone you don't like speaks very well for you. Kay!
ReplyDeleteI always think spiders webs are intricate works of art.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I'm with Margaret, I love the looks and interesting-ness (made-up word) of spider webs. And I don't like spiders at all. I'm not afraid of them, but I keep my distance from them and hope they do the same by me. I DO SMASH them if I see one.
ReplyDeleteWe all have creepy crawlers that creep us out.
ReplyDeleteActually, that was one lucky spider.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of cane spiders before. I do like spiders however I'm scared of stink bugs.
ReplyDeleteSpiders are important in the grand scheme of things. I do not like them indoors unless they are hanging out at the kitchen and eating all the other bugs.
ReplyDeleteExcept for the mess of all the webs they make, I love spiders. They eat so many bugs around here, thus causing the webs' mess. If we find one in the house, we do our best to get it outdoors, though.
ReplyDeleteSo funny. I'm pretty much the I'll go the other way around when it comes to big insects.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind spiders. We get a break from them in winter, at least. You are very brave to show the web! Good for you.
ReplyDeleteI usually kill spiders I'm not going to lie
ReplyDeleteAs long as they stay outside, I have no issue with them.
