Art goes for a morning run every Saturday and often finds a penny, nickel or dime. He never finds anything bigger. Well, there was that one time he found a quarter.
"Did you look around?" I asked him. "What if there was a $5.00 or $10.00 bill?"
"No," he said. "Then I'd feel bad and would have to look for the owner. Remember the times you found money?"
And both times, it happened during our trips in 2018.
We were on a Viking river cruise excursion in May, 2018 and was one of the last people to leave the bus before reboarding the ship. I'd noticed a rolled up bill on the floor of one of the seats.
I was surprised to see it was a 50 Euro bill. That's about $60! By the time I got off the bus, everyone was scattered and already on the boat.
I took the bill to the program director and told him which bus and approximately where I found it. He promised to mention it when we were all gathered. He didn't. When I questioned him later, he said he would add it to the staff tips. I still don't understand why he couldn't have just mentioned it on the intercom, but he said there would be too many people then coming to claim it. I just felt bad for the person who lost such a rather large amount of cash.
Would you believe that while buying a peach soft serve I found 11,000 yen?
No kidding! That's about $110!So what to do.
I wondered if there was a Lost and Found. The Japanese tend to be extremely honest, and in the end I gave it to our tour guide who ran back to the area and said the police was called.
I felt good about that.
Whatever the case, whenever we find money we always add it to our Charity jar which Art donates.
I have to tell you that since 2018, I have not found any money during our trips. I'll keep looking though. 😂

The custodians at my school would pick up the change that students dropped and couldn't be bothered to retrieve. It would help to fund a bit of a social for them at year-end. If you have a number of people doing this in a large school throughout the year, it mounts up.
ReplyDeleteWow! The most I've ever found was $5.
ReplyDeleteI think I found $20 once a long time ago. Funny thing, I just went to the bank yesterday to withdrawal some money for my wife. At the bank, when it came out of the ATM machine, I stuck it in my pocket with my cell phone and went home. I forgot about it for awhile but then went to use my cell phone and stuck my hand into a wad of bills. I put the bills where my wife could find them and went about my day. That evening, she collected her money and said it was $50 short! I hadn't bothered to count it at the ATM but after years of withdrawals, it has never been wrong when I have. I figured one bill must have come out when I pulled my cellphone out to use it. I thought it was lost and someone was going to have a lucky find. But my wife found it this morning on the office floor, where I apparently pulled out my cellphone the first time so the lost has been found.
ReplyDeleteI once found a wallet in nyc and returned at a store cashier. Who knows what happened to it in NYC
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of my one time venture into buying lottery tickets.
ReplyDeleteOur department secretary at that large urban high school decided we should pool our money each week and buy lottery tickets. It was $5 a week for each of us, which didn't seem like very much. We won very little and she put it back into more tickets each week. By the end of the month, I realized I had shelled out $20, enough for dinner out (this was 20 years ago) and gotten nothing in return. I told her I wouldn't be participating any more, and if God wanted me to win money, He would drop it in my front yard. The next week, when I went out to bring in our garbage cans from the curb, there was a one dollar bill in the gutter, next to the cans. That's the kind of money God was willing to provide!
I'm very glad that I found you! Aloha from town side
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of money! I always turn in any bills over $1. Once I've done that, whatever happens to it I don't have control over. If that individual keeps it, they have to live with that. I'm a ridiculously honest person and it sounds like you are the same!
ReplyDeleteI know it I lost that much money I would hope the finder would try to find me. It's complicated, though.
ReplyDeleteThis year I found a twenty at Tractor Supply. I usually find pennies when I walk but I have found nickels, dimes and quarters.
ReplyDeleteMy son had a job at a local dirt track. He would clean the litter under the spectator stand he day after the races. He loved that job because he always found money!
ReplyDeleteGee... I'm amazed at all the people finding money!
DeleteI found a $20 at Disney world on the ground when we took the kids (when they were little). And once in England I found a 5 pound note on the grounds near a castle. And I've lost money here and there... but never felt bad about it and always think how fun it will be for the person who finds it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't found money on the ground, but I've found money doing the laundry. When raising my son, I told him to remove any critters or money out of his pockets and close the zipper before putting his clothes in the basket. He also knew, if he didn't remove any money and I found it when doing laundry, that it was mine. I found a $10 bill once in the washer, and never found anymore there. Mean Mom in Kansas whose son also learned to do the laundry!
ReplyDeleteToo funny! You raised that son of yours well and that's why he loves you so much.
DeleteOne time I was kind of broke and I wanted a soda at Costco which is of course cheap and when I was walking I found $1 bill flying past in the Wind, then another and then another. It was all crumpled so I think someone tried to shove it in their pocket but it fell out and yep I had enough soda money. And this is a weird coincidence I worked off kapiolani and I saw a man's wallet in my office's parking lot. I picked it up and I was shocked to find out it belong to my cousin who lives in Molokai. He had a small plane that he flew back and forth, still does to this day. And luckily I found it because this was near a vet center that there were a lot of homeless vets. So I gave it to my mom who gave it to my aunt who is his dad's sister here. That was an amazing coincidence I've never found a wallet again. I did find a small pouch at a Shopping Center's parking lot, no ID and it was $30. A cousin of mines many, many years ago had the Ala Moana Center's parking lot cleanup contract. My uncle worked for his son and he found many many coins every night. He literally cleaned up cleaning up.BB
ReplyDeleteGood gracious! That is absolutely an amazing coincidence to find your Molokai cousin's wallet! There is an angel following you everywhere.
DeleteYou bring up a thoughtful question and as you describe there are different ways to handle it...some of them not good as the guy on the ship.
ReplyDeleteJust today I found a Whole Foods gift card that said to "somebody (I forgot the name)" from "somebody (I forgot that name too)" in the parking lot at the YMCA. It was for $50! I turned it in to the people at the check in counter - figured they would know who it belonged to. I see pennies everywhere. And if I can I pick them up. Each one of them is a lucky penny, right?
ReplyDeleteI give things back and correct tellers at checkouts as well. No big back pats. It is just what you do. Nice to hear about your jar.
ReplyDeleteHonolulu Aunty said she picks up pennies. I realized the other day when I saw one that it wasn't worth dirtying my fingers. I will pick up larger coins though. Speaking of found money many years ago I got a huge check (tens of thousands of dollars) in the mail with notation it was for a settlement of an insurance claim or something. It had my name on it and we wondered what it was for. We ended up sending it back because though it was made out to me they had the wrong person. Don't recall if I got a thank you.
ReplyDeletewe find a lot of coins on the ground, we have never found paper money!! it's a difficult situation...how in the world do you find the person who lost it!!
ReplyDeleteI've found a few coins from time to time but never paper money.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
